Preview: Braves at Blue Jays
GAME: Atlanta Braves (14-21) at Toronto Blue Jays (17-22)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 4:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario

Matt Kemp and Nick Markakis are veterans who have played a combined 3,165 major-league games, and their offensive contributions in the middle of the Atlanta Braves lineup have steadied the team through a choppy start to the season. The Braves play the finale of a quick two-game set at the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, one night after Kemp finished 4-for-4 and Markakis drove home three runs in a 10-6 victory.

Kemp fell one hit shy of his career high to raise his average to .346, Markakis has hits in 10 of his past 11 games to boost his average to .308, and struggling rookie Dansby Swanson extended his hitting streak to seven games as Atlanta won for the third time in four games. The Blue Jays lost for only the second time in the past nine games and hit a franchise-record five batters Monday. Center fielder Kevin Pillar extended his hitting streak to five games and is batting .421 with seven runs scored in that stretch. First baseman Justin Smoak hit a two-run homer in the ninth, his fifth homer in the past 16 games.

TV: 4:07 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Jaime Garcia (1-2, 4.33 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (2-2, 3.12)

While he has walked five hitters in each of his past two starts, Garcia nonetheless has kept the Braves in games as four of his six turns have been one- or two-run games. He lost at the Astros on Wednesday, giving up four runs on six hits in six innings, snapping a string of three consecutive starts with two runs or fewer allowed. Garcia, who makes his sixth road start of the season, has posted a 1.80 ERA while going 2-1 in three career starts against Toronto.

Estrada has helped the Blue Jays recover from a rotten start to the season, allowing two earned runs or fewer in five of his past six outings. He won for the second time in three starts in May on Thursday against Seattle, striking out eight while surrendering two runs on four hits in six innings. The 33-year-old, who is limiting opposing hitters to a .227 batting average, is 4-1 with a 2.95 ERA in 11 career appearances (five starts) against the Braves.

WALK-OFFS

1. Toronto OF Steve Pearce landed on the disabled list Monday with strained right calf, and the Blue Jays recalled RP Leonel Campos.

2. Swanson, who batted just .150 in the first 27 games of the season, is hitting .320 during his hitting streak.

3. Braves 2B Brandon Phillips is 9-for-25 with two homers against Estrada, while Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista is 2-for-8 with a homer and two RBIs off Garcia.

Preview: Rays at Indians
GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (19-22) at Cleveland Indians (20-17)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 6:10 PM EST
WHERE: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio

The Cleveland Indians may have found a way to get Jason Kipnis going as they prepare to host the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday in the middle contest of their three-game series. Kipnis, who missed the first 15 games of the season with a shoulder injury, is 5-for-8 with two home runs, four RBIs, two runs scored, a double and two walks in two contests since being moved to the leadoff spot, increasing his batting average to .203.

Cleveland (20-17), the defending American League champion, scored eight runs for the third time in five games in Monday's 8-7 victory. Tampa Bay (19-22), which has alternated wins and losses in its last six games and is 3-6 in its past nine contests, is also showing more pop of late with 25 runs in its last four games. The Rays' Jake Odorizzi is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in three starts since returning from the disabled list and allowed one run or fewer in his last four turns, and opposes Danny Salazar, who recorded only 7 1/3 innings over his past two outings (0-1) and a season-high five earned runs last time out. The Indians need innings out of Salazar after Carlos Carrasco, Monday's starter, left after 3 2/3 innings because of tightness in his left pectoral.

TV: 6:10 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Jake Odorizzi (2-2, 2.61 ERA) vs. Indians RH Danny Salazar (2-3, 5.20)

Odorizzi was saddled with the loss after yielding one run, four hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings of a 6-0 loss to Kansas City on Thursday. The 27-year-old Illinois native permitted nine hits and three walks with 16 strikeouts in 18 innings since missing time because of a hamstring injury. Odorizzi is 0-1 with a 2.92 ERA in three starts versus Cleveland and fares well versus designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion (4-for-27, home run, double, three walks).

Salazar also allowed five hits and two walks while striking out four in 2 2/3 innings but didn't take the loss in the Indians' 8-7 setback in Toronto on Wednesday. The 27-year-old has a 14.14 ERA and a batting average against of .429 in seven first innings this season but a 3.07 ERA and .226 average against in all other frames. Salazar is 2-0 with a 0.66 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and .111 batting average against in two turns - one apiece in 2015 and 2016 - versus Tampa Bay.

WALK-OFFS

1. Indians RF Abraham Almonte (.221) left Monday's game after aggravating a right shoulder injury that he originally sustained in an at-bat last week and is expected to be placed on the 10-day disabled list.

2. Rays 3B Evan Longoria needs two at-bats to break Carl Crawford's club record of 4,992 and three walks to pass Ben Zobrist (542) for the franchise mark.

3. Encarnacion (.198), who signed a three-year, $60-million contract during the offseason, went 0-for-5 with an RBI and run scored Monday - his first game batting fifth in the order after hitting cleanup all season - and is hitless in 16 at-bats over his last four games.

Preview: Nationals at Pirates
GAME: Washington Nationals (24-13) at Pittsburgh Pirates (16-22)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The Pittsburgh Pirates hope their new-found offense carries with them after enjoying a rare day off on the heels of playing in 17 consecutive days. After mustering just 13 runs during a season-high six-game losing skid, the Pirates have erupted for 10 en route to winning back-to-back contests heading into the opener of a three-game series versus the visiting Washington Nationals on Tuesday.

Josh Bell belted his team-leading seventh homer in Sunday's 6-4 victory in 10 innings over Arizona, accounting for the second time he's gone deep to go along with four RBIs in his last three contests on the heels of an 0-for-14 stretch in his previous five games. Andrew McCutchen also homered and is batting .250 at home as opposed to .212 overall, but the 2013 National League MVP has struggled mightily in his career (.188) versus Tuesday starter Stephen Strasburg. Speaking of NL MVPs, 2015 recipient Bryce Harper is off to a blistering start to the season and has new one-year, $21.625 million contract extension in his back pocket. The 24-year-old, who is 8-for-17 with two homers and five RBIs during his four-game hitting streak, is batting a staggering .434 with six homers and 16 RBIs on the road this season.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, MASN (Washington), ROOT (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Stephen Strasburg (3-1, 3.28 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Chad Kuhl (1-3, 5.81)

Strasburg allowed season highs in runs (five) and hits (eight) over six innings, but struck out nine to walk away with a no-decision against Baltimore on Wednesday. The 28-year-old has fared well versus Pittsburgh ever since making his memorable major-league debut, posting a 3-2 mark with a 2.51 ERA and 60 strikeouts in six starts (43 innings). Strasburg handcuffed the Pirates in their last encounter on July 15, to the tune of one run allowed on three hits over eight innings in a 5-1 triumph.

Kuhl fell to 0-3 in his last six outings on Wednesday after allowing four runs on six hits in five innings of a 5-2 setback at the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 24-year-old sputtered out of the blocks by surrendering a two-run homer to Cody Bellinger and later said that it was "a shame what happened in the first inning. It's just unacceptable." Kuhl will look to rebound against a Washington team that he held to just one hit over six scoreless innings on July 17.

WALK-OFFS

1. Washington 2B Daniel Murphy is 3-for-19 in his last six games.

2. Pittsburgh RF Jose Osuna was hitless in his previous 12 at-bats before belting a two-run homer in the 10th inning against the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

3. Nationals SS Trea Turner has two homers and five RBIs during a three-game stretch and has scored a run in each of his last four.

Preview: Astros at Marlins
GAME: Houston Astros (27-12) at Miami Marlins (14-23)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida

Dallas Keuchel will try to become baseball's first seven-game winner when he leads the visiting Houston Astros into the second of three games against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. Keuchel improved to 6-0 with six dominant innings at Yankee Stadium his last time out, part of the Astros' current 12-3 run.

Their surge continued with a 7-2 victory in the opener of the interleague series Monday night as Yuli Gurriel hit Houston's third grand slam in May, a franchise record for one month. Jose Altuve also went deep and drove in three runs for the Astros (27-12), who own the best record in baseball, are 13-6 on the road and have won each of their three interleague games. The Marlins are headed in the other direction and have not won consecutive games since April 22-23. Monday's loss dropped Miami to 1-6 on its current homestand and 4-15 since it opened the year 10-8.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT Sports Southwest (Houston), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (6-0, 1.69 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Tom Koehler (1-1, 5.60)

Keuchel is tied for the MLB lead in innings pitched (58 2/3) and his ERA was third overall among qualified hurlers. Thursday's win over the Yankees was his shortest outing of the year but he tied a season high with nine strikeouts and walked only one. The 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner allowed two unearned runs in seven frames in his only prior start against Miami.

Koehler finished six innings only twice in his first seven starts and has fallen shy of that mark three straight times, including a no-decision against St. Louis on Wednesday in which he gave up four runs in 5 1/3 frames. He threw a season-high 99 pitches in that outing while allowing zero home runs for the first time in 2017. The 30-year-old, who won his only prior start against the Astros, will be careful when facing Evan Gattis (5-for-11 against Koehler), Altuve (2-for-3) and Marwin Gonzalez (2-for-3).

WALK-OFFS

1. Marlins 1B Justin Bour homered Monday and has gone deep four times in his last five games.

2. Miami is 8-20 in interleague play since the beginning of 2016.

3. Houston is 15 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2005 season (89-73).

Preview: Orioles at Tigers
GAME: Baltimore Orioles (22-14) at Detroit Tigers (18-18)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan

The Baltimore Orioles followed up a six-game winning streak by losing four in a row and will try to snap out of the skid when they visit the Detroit Tigers for the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday. The Orioles dropped six of their last seven on the road and have not won a series away from Camden Yards since taking two of three at Cincinnati from April 18-20.

The Kansas City Royals owned the worst record in the American League and were last in the majors in runs scored entering last weekend but somehow managed to secure three straight one-run wins over Baltimore in a three-game sweep as the Orioles could not find their offense in the first two games and watched the pitching staff let them down in Sunday's 9-8 setback. Baltimore could use more production from star third baseman Manny Machado, who is 4-for-26 over the last six games. Machado will get his first career look at Tigers lefty Matthew Boyd, who goes up against Baltimore left-hander Wade Miley. Detroit could use some offense after totaling five runs in its last three games and is returning home following a 4-5 road trip.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles LH Wade Miley (1-1, 2.45 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Matthew Boyd (2-3, 3.89)

Miley struggles to work deep in games and issued a total of 15 walks in 17 2/3 innings over his last four outings. The Louisiana native was pulled from a May 5 outing against the Chicago White Sox in the first inning after taking a pair of come-backers off the arm but showed no signs of a lingering injury while going five innings at Washington and allowing two runs on Wednesday. Miley is making only his second career start against the Tigers and served up five runs in six frames in his first chance.

Boyd suffered back-to-back losses to Cleveland and Arizona in his last two outings while allowing a total of seven runs - six earned - and 13 hits in 13 2/3 innings. The Oregon State product is winless in his last four turns despite yielding three earned runs or fewer in each turn. Boyd is making his first career start against Baltimore.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles CF Adam Jones (hip) sat out Sunday and is day-to-day.

2. Detroit 1B Miguel Cabrera is 2-for-20 with a pair of singles and seven strikeouts in his last five games.

3. Baltimore 1B Chris Davis homered in each of the last two contests.

Preview: Reds at Cubs
GAME: Cincinnati Reds (19-18) at Chicago Cubs (18-19)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois

If the Chicago Cubs are going to overcome their sluggish start to their World Series title defense, they’ll have to begin by playing better at home. The Cubs begin an important 10-game homestand Tuesday with the opener of a three-game set against the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cubs have dropped their last three home games and are 7-9 at Wrigley Field, and they need to rediscover their home-field advantage after going 2-4 on last week’s road trip to Colorado and St. Louis. Cincinnati dropped the final three contests of a four-game set at San Francisco over the weekend and has slipped 2 1/2 games behind first-place St. Louis in the National League Central. The Reds will try to get back on track behind veteran Bronson Arroyo, whose best effort of the season came in a win over the Cubs on April 23, when he allowed two runs and three hits over six innings with a season-high seven strikeouts. Chicago will counter with John Lackey, who was tagged for seven runs (five earned) over six innings while taking the loss in that same contest.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Bronson Arroyo (3-2, 5.94 ERA) vs. Cubs RH John Lackey (3-3, 4.29)

The Reds have won Arroyo’s last five starts, and he has allowed three runs or fewer in four of them. The 40-year-old gave up two runs and six hits over six innings last time out at San Francisco, with both runs coming on solo homers - the eighth and ninth long balls he has allowed. Arroyo is 14-11 with a 3.06 ERA in 33 games (31 starts) against the Cubs.

Lackey was tremendous in his last start, matching his season-high with 10 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings at Colorado. The 38-year-old has won his last two decisions, and the Cubs have won his last three starts. Lackey is 5-5 with a 3.83 ERA in 14 starts against the Reds.

WALK-OFFS

1. Reds 1B Joey Votto is 12-for-33 with a homer and eight RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak.

2. Cubs C Miguel Montero is 8-for-19 with three homers and seven RBIs against Arroyo.

3. Cincinnati CF Billy Hamilton has 27 stolen bases against the Cubs - tied for his second-most against any team - and is 9-for-26 versus Lackey.

Preview: Phillies at Rangers
GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (14-21) at Texas Rangers (19-20)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas

The Texas Rangers weren't having much fun as they labored through a nine-game road trip, but their mood has changed dramatically since their offense got in gear in the finale. The Rangers erupted for 11 runs in that tilt and 37 total during their six-game winning streak heading into the opener of a three-game interleague series versus the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

A healthier Yu Darvish has been enjoying the ride as well as Texas has emerged victorious in each of his last four trips to the mound. "Last year, I couldn't afford to have fun. I was so focused on my body," the 30-year-old Japan native said through an interpreter in reference to being a year removed from Tommy John surgery. "This year, physically I feel pretty good so I think that's why I can actually have fun right now, because my body feels good." Philadelphia hasn't been feeling good with losses in 12 of its last 15 games, although Tommy Joseph is batting .400 with four homers, nine RBIs and as many runs scored in May. The Phillies are 1-2 in the middle of a nine-game road trip.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, TCN (Philadelphia), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Jerad Eickhoff (0-3, 4.76 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Yu Darvish (3-2, 2.96)

Eickhoff's season has taken a turn for the worse after answering four strong starts with three disastrous ones. The 26-year-old has allowed 14 runs on 22 hits in his last 15 innings, losing his first two before receiving a no-decision despite permitting five runs on eight hits - including a pair of homers - in 3 2/3 frames versus Seattle last Tuesday. Eickhoff, who was part of a seven-player trade with the Rangers that featured Cole Hamels in the summer of 2015, led the Texas League with 144 strikeouts with Frisco in 2014.

Darvish recorded his fourth consecutive quality start and sixth of the season on Wednesday, but was saddled with his second straight no-decision despite allowing three runs on seven hits versus San Diego. He was taken deep twice for the second time in four outings, but did not walk a batter after issuing four free passes in each of his previous two outings. Darvish, who will receive his first look at the Phillies, owns a 7-2 career mark with a 2.26 ERA against National League representatives.

WALK-OFFS

1. Philadelphia LF Aaron Altherr is 15-for-40 with six homers, 16 RBIs and 11 runs scored in May.

2. Texas OF Nomar Mazara, who had an RBI single in Sunday's 6-4 victory over Oakland, is 7-for-19 with five RBIs during his five-game hitting streak.

3. The Phillies' six road wins are tied for the fewest in the National League.

Preview: Rockies at Twins
GAME: Colorado Rockies (24-15) at Minnesota Twins (19-15)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota

DJ LeMahieu hopes his torrid stretch at the plate travels well as the Colorado Rockies begin a season-high 10-game road trip on Tuesday with the opener of a three-game interleague series against the Minnesota Twins. The defending National League batting champion recorded back-to-back three-hit performances over the weekend and his third in the team's 10-game homestand, during which he went 15-for-41 to raise his average to a season-best .295.

The 28-year-old LeMahieu's 17th multi-hit performance of the season in Sunday's 9-6 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers helped Colorado salvage a split of a four-game series and finish the homestand with a 6-4 mark. The NL West-leading Rockies begin a stretch of 22 of their next 29 contests on the road in Minnesota, which opens a six-game homestand on the heels of winning four of five versus American League Central foes on a rain-shortened road trip. Kennys Vargas increased his RBI total seven in his last five games with a two-run double in Sunday's 8-3 setback to Cleveland. The 26-year-old has a team-best 13 RBIs since being recalled from Triple-A Rochester on April 23.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Kyle Freeland (3-2, 2.93 ERA) vs. Twins RH Phil Hughes (4-1, 4.74)

Freeland owned a 2-0 mark and allowed three runs and 19 hits over a four-start stretch before last Tuesday when he sustained his first loss since his second outing of the season. The 24-year-old rookie permitted five runs (three earned) and four hits - all in a second inning that also featured two errors by his team - in an 8-1 setback to the Chicago Cubs last time out. Freeland, who also matched a season-high four walks over his six-inning performance, will pitch at an AL park for the first time in his career.

Hughes got out of the blocks with a flourish to begin both this season and his last start, although things unraveled quickly in Thursday's outing against the Chicago White Sox. The 30-year-old surrendered his first hit with one out in the fourth inning and yielded a three-run homer to Melky Cabrera in the fifth before receiving his second consecutive no-decision. Hughes, who permitted five runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings, allowed four earned runs for the fourth time in his last six starts - with six homers given up in that stretch.

WALK-OFFS

1. Minnesota SS Jorge Polanco launched a solo homer on Sunday, marking the eighth time in his last nine games that he's recorded a hit.

2. Colorado Tony Wolters (concussion) completed a three-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque and is expected to be reinstated Tuesday, with fellow C Dustin Garneau to be optioned to the Isotopes.

3. Twins 1B Joe Mauer has scored three times during his five-game hitting streak.

GAME: Boston Red Sox (19-18) at St. Louis Cardinals (21-15)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri

The St. Louis Cardinals are surging up the standings with eight wins in the last nine games and just got done taking two of three from the rival Chicago Cubs to open an eight-game homestand. The Cardinals will take a crack at an interleague rival when they host the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a two-game series on Tuesday.

St. Louis is averaging 6.6 runs in its last eight wins and added some power from missing sources in Sunday's 5-0 win. Yadier Molina snapped a string of 19 straight games without a home run with a pair of blasts while Matt Carpenter broke a string of five consecutive contests without a homer and four without an RBI by taking Jake Arrieta deep. The Boston staff is a little shorthanded after watching Drew Pomeranz leave his start on Sunday after three innings with triceps tightness and burning through five relievers in an 11-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, which gave the team its second straight series loss. The Red Sox will try to get some length on Tuesday out of surging lefty Eduardo Rodriguez while Cardinals righty Lance Lynn attempts to bounce back from a rough outing.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NESN (Boston), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (1-1, 2.80 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Lance Lynn (4-1, 2.75)

Rodriguez totaled five earned runs allowed in 24 innings over his last four starts but is just 1-0 in that span. The Venezuela native struck out five and did not walk a batter while allowing one run at Milwaukee on Thursday but could not get any run support and ended up without factoring in the decision. Rodriguez is making his fourth start against an NL Central opponent already this season and yielded a total of four earned runs and 12 hits over 17 1/3 total innings against Pittsburgh, Chicago and Milwaukee.

Lynn enjoyed a string of four straight wins and allowed a total of two runs in 25 innings during that stretch before falling well off that pace at Miami on Wednesday. The 30-year-old was ripped for four runs on five hits and four walks in four innings by the Marlins but did not factor in the decision. Lynn allowed one earned run over seven innings in his lone previous start against Boston and is 5-6 with a 3.40 ERA in 19 career interleague games - 16 starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox DH Hanley Ramirez, who has yet to make a start at 1B this season, could again be limited to pinch-hitting duty in the NL park after missing three games with back spasms and going 1-for-4 in his return on Sunday.

2. Cardinals CF Dexter Fowler is 0-for-4 with five walks in the last three games.

3. Boston rookie LF Andrew Benintendi is 0-for-19 over the last five contests.

Preview: Yankees at Royals
GAME: New York Yankees (22-13) at Kansas City Royals (16-21)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri

The New York Yankees are in first place in the American League East while the Kansas City Royals are last in the AL Central, but the two teams are moving in different directions. The Royals will try to secure their fifth straight win and hand the Yankees their fifth loss in six games when they host the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday.

Kansas City ranks last in the major leagues with a total of 119 runs scored but showed signs of breaking out of its collective slump with three home runs in a 9-8, come-from-behind win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday - including a 464-foot blast by Jorge Soler that marked his first homer of the season. "I don't think I've seen a ball hit harder than that in this park," Royals manager Ned Yost told reporters. "It was on a dead line over the center-field wall. It was smoked." The Yankees smoked plenty of balls on Sunday as well and totaled 18 runs in a doubleheader but only ended up splitting the set with the Houston Astros. Veteran left-hander CC Sabathia will try to make sure Soler and company don't keep the offensive surge going while righty Jason Hammel starts for Kansas City on Tuesday.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (New York), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH CC Sabathia (2-2, 5.77 ERA) vs. Royals RH Jason Hammel (1-4, 5.97)

Sabathia is no longer the Cy Young candidate he was during his prime and is stuck in a rut that saw him allow a total of 22 runs in 20 2/3 innings over his last four starts. The California native turned in his longest outing of that span at Cincinnati last Tuesday, when he yielded five runs in six frames and absorbed the loss. Sabathia is seeing Kansas City for the first time since beating the Royals in 2015.

Hammel is enduring a rough transition back to the AL after spending the last 2 1/2 seasons with the Chicago Cubs in the NL. The veteran followed up his first win of the season by getting ripped for seven runs - six earned - and 13 hits in seven innings at Tampa Bay on Wednesday. Hammel, who began his career with the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, is 4-4 with a 4.78 ERA in 19 career games - 13 starts - against the Yankees.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees LF Brett Gardner went 6-for-9 with four runs scored in Sunday's doubleheader.

2. Kansas City CF Lorenzo Cain is 11-for-24 during a six-game hitting streak.

3. New York rookie RF Aaron Judge leads the majors with 14 home runs entering Monday.

Preview: Mets at Diamondbacks
GAME: New York Mets (16-21) at Arizona Diamondbacks (22-18)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 9:40 PM EST
WHERE: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona

Zack Greinke seeks his fourth consecutive victory when the Arizona Diamondbacks host the New York Mets on Tuesday in the middle contest of a three-game series. The right-hander has a 2.06 ERA over his last five starts and allowed only one run in three of the outings.

Greinke was superb in his last turn when he allowed one run and one hit over eight innings while beating Pittsburgh and struck out 11 for the second time in four outings. He will be looking to pitch the Diamondbacks to their fifth victory in the past seven games as well as follow up a performance in which teammate Zack Godley held New York to one run and one hit over 6 2/3 innings in Monday's 7-3 victory. New York has dropped five consecutive games - one shy of its season-worst slide - and has allowed a whopping 42 runs during the stretch. The Mets badly miss injured left fielder Yoenis Cespedes (hamstring) while center fielder Curtis Granderson (.148 average) has been unable to shake his season-long slump despite going 1-for-3 in the opener.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets LH Tommy Milone (1-0, 5.88 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Greinke (4-2, 2.79)

Milone allowed two runs and six hits in a five-inning no-decision against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday in his first outing with the Mets. The 30-year-old began the season with the Milwaukee Brewers and was waived May 7 after going 1-0 with a 6.43 ERA in six appearances (three starts). Milone made one career start against the Diamondbacks in 2012 as a member of the Oakland Athletics and allowed four runs and nine hits over five innings in a no-decision.

Greinke owns a splendid 1.03 WHIP through eight starts and has 58 strikeouts against only nine walks. The 33-year-old hasn't lost at Chase Field this season, going 3-0 with a 2.27 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in five turns. Greinke is 4-1 with 2.74 ERA in seven career starts against the Mets and has shut down right fielder Jay Bruce (7-for-37, 11 strikeouts, one homer) while struggling with shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (15-for-35).

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks LF Yasmany Tomas hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the eighth inning Monday - making him 5-for-34 in May.

2. Cabrera (thumb) will likely miss his third consecutive game Tuesday and the Mets are considering placing him on the 10-day disabled list.

3. Arizona placed CF A.J. Pollock (groin) on the DL, recalled OF Reymond Fuentes from Triple-A Reno and designated RHP Enrique Burgos for assignment.

Preview: White Sox at Angels
GAME: Chicago White Sox (17-19) at Los Angeles Angels (20-21)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 10:07 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California

One week after missing five games with a sore left hamstring, Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout has returned with a vengeance. Trout has homered in a career-high four straight games for the Angels, who continue their three-game series against the visiting Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

Trout belted a 417-foot blast in Monday’s 5-3 win as the Angels won for the third time in their last four games to pull within a game of .500. The center fielder’s home run followed a three-run blast by Kole Calhoun, who was moved to the leadoff spot after third baseman Yunel Escobar was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a left hamstring strain. The White Sox have lost nine of their last 13 games and will be without catcher Geovany Soto for a minimum of three months after the veteran was placed on the 60-day disabled list Monday. The 34-year-old Soto will have right elbow surgery on Tuesday and be replaced in the lineup by Kevan Smith and Omar Narvaez, who is hitting .228 in 19 games.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Derek Holland (3-3, 2.43 ERA) vs. Angels RH JC Ramirez (3-3, 4.20)

Holland allowed seven runs (three earned) on six hits over five innings in a 7-6 loss to Minnesota last Thursday. The 30-year-old has posted five quality starts in seven outings but matched his season total by yielding three home runs in the loss to the Twins. Albert Pujols is 10-for-34 with four home runs against Holland, who is 10-8 with a 5.24 ERA in 28 career games (25 starts) against the Angels.

After lowering his ERA in three straight starts, Ramirez took a step back last Thursday in a 7-1 loss to Detroit, allowing five runs on eight hits over seven frames. The 28-year-old settled in after the first two innings and allowed just one runner past first base in his final five frames. Ramirez, who is making his first career start against the White Sox, moved into the rotation last month to replace Garrett Richards (biceps).

WALK-OFFS

1. Chicago has lost 12 of its last 13 games at Angel Stadium.

2. With another home run on Tuesday, Trout would tie the franchise record set by Bobby Bonds in 1977.

3. The White Sox purchased the contract of RHP Gregory Infante from Triple-A Charlotte.

Preview: Athletics at Mariners
GAME: Oakland Athletics (16-22) at Seattle Mariners (18-21)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington

Jean Segura has been one of the hottest players in the majors this season and the Seattle shortstop seeks to extend his career-best hitting streak to 15 games when the Mariners host the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday. Segura is a scorching 26-for-63 during the stretch and boasts an American League-leading .370 batting average entering the middle contest of a three-game set.

Segura batted a career-best .319 for the Arizona Diamondbacks last season and Seattle acquired him in the offseason in a deal that included the Mariners sending right-hander Taijuan Walker to Arizona. Segura's hot bat has come in handy with Robinson Cano (quadriceps) missing the past five games and the second baseman is questionable for Tuesday's game based on manager Scott Servais' postgame comments. Seattle halted a four-game slide with Monday's 6-5 victory, a contest in which the Athletics drew five ninth-inning walks to move within one before falling to 0-4 on a six-game road trip. Oakland slugger Khris Davis belted his 11th homer of the season Monday but is only 7-for-50 in May, while first baseman Yonder Alonso was hitless for the second straight game after hitting eight homers in his first 11 games this month.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, NBC Sports California (Oakland), ROOT (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Andrew Triggs (5-2, 2.21 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Chase De Jong (0-3, 7.85)

Triggs is off to a fabulous start and has given up one total earned run in his five victories. The 28-year-old hasn't allowed a run in his two road starts, allowing nine hits and one walk while winning at Kansas City and Houston. Triggs' worst outing of the season came against Seattle when he was rocked for six runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings April 23 and has a 14.85 ERA in two career outings against the Mariners.

De Jong was torched for six runs and seven hits over five innings while losing to the Toronto Blue Jays in his last turn. The 23-year-old showed promise in his previous outing when he gave up one run and four over six innings in a no-decision with the Texas Rangers on May 6. De Jong mowed down Oakland hitters in a relief appearance April 22 when he allowed one hit over four scoreless innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Athletics have dropped 12 of their last 14 road games and are a major-league worst 5-14 on the road.

2. Seattle activated RHP Steve Cishek (hip) from the 10-day disabled list - he retired the lone batter he faced Monday - and optioned LHP Zac Curtis to Double-A Arkansas.

3. Oakland C Stephen Vogt yielded his 20th stolen base of the season in the series opener, most in the American League.

Preview: Brewers at Padres
GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (21-18) at San Diego Padres (15-25)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California

Hunter Renfroe is one of the building blocks of the San Diego rebuilding project and the Padres' rookie outfielder experienced the top moment of his career in the series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers. Renfroe launched a game-winning two-run blast in the bottom of the 10th inning and will look to follow up the performance when the Padres host Milwaukee again Tuesday.

Renfroe had a career-best four RBIs in Monday's 6-5 victory - San Diego's third in the past 12 games - and has two homers and seven RBIs over the past two games as he attempts to find his comfort zone. The two-hit outing in the opener was his first multi-hit game since April 21 and his average has risen 13 points over the last two games to .217. Milwaukee appeared to be en route to its seventh victory in eight games when recently recalled infielder Eric Sogard homered in the top of the 10th prior to the collapse in the bottom of the inning. Brewers right fielder Domingo Santana had three hits and three RBIs in the opener of the four-game set and is 9-for-16 during a four-game hitting streak.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (1-2, 3.99 ERA) vs. Padres LH Clayton Richard (2-4, 4.34)

Nelson hasn't won since April 13 but put together a strong outing in his last turn. The 27-year-old wasn't part of the decision against the Boston Red Sox on Thursday while matching his season high of eight strikeouts and allowing one unearned run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. Nelson is 1-3 with a 3.80 ERA in four career starts against the Padres and has struggled with an 8.00 ERA while losing both career outings at Petco Park.

Richard is winless in each of his last four starts and also is coming off a solid performance. The 33-year-old gave up one run and five hits in seven innings against Texas on Thursday before the bullpen lost the lead and the game in the ninth inning. Richard is 3-3 with a 5.04 ERA in 14 career appearances (eight starts) against the Brewers.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers 1B Eric Thames (leg soreness) is expected back Tuesday after missing the opener and the status of 3B Travis Shaw (finger) will be decided prior to Tuesday's game after he sat out Monday.

2. San Diego 3B Ryan Schimpf struck out four times in five hitless at-bats in the opener and is 2-for-24 with 12 strikeouts over his past six games.

3. Milwaukee utility man Hernan Perez is 8-for-18 over the last four contests after producing his third game of two or more hits during the stretch.

Preview: Dodgers at Giants
GAME: Los Angeles Dodgers (22-17) at San Francisco Giants (16-24)
DATE/TIME: Tuesday, May 16 - 10:15 PM EST
WHERE: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California

Another former All-Star has landed on the disabled list for the San Francisco Giants, who are showing signs of breaking out of their early-season malaise with four straight wins. The Giants continue their three-game series against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday without right fielder Hunter Pence, who is out for at least the next 10 days with a strained left hamstring.

Pence was placed on the disabled list Monday for the fifth time in the past three years, joining Madison Bumgarner (shoulder, ribs) and closer Mark Melancon (pronator strain), who could return later this week. Mac Williamson was called up from Triple-A Sacramento and started in right field in Tuesday’s 8-4 victory, collecting two hits, including an RBI single. The Dodgers lost for the third time in their last five games but received another solid effort from catcher Yasmani Grandal, who is 16-for-35 during his nine-game hitting streak. Help is on the way in the form of second baseman Logan Forsythe (toe) and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez (elbow), who are both set to begin minor-league rehab assignments at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga on Tuesday.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), NBC Sports Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Rich Hill (1-1, 3.38 ERA) vs. Giants LH Ty Blach (0-2, 4.88)

Hill will be activated from the disabled list to make his first start since April 16, when he threw three innings against Arizona before leaving with a blister on his left middle finger. The 37-year-old was cleared to return after tossing five no-hit innings for Rancho Cucamonga in a second rehab start last Thursday. Hill owns a 3-2 mark and 2.70 ERA in eight career starts against San Francisco.

Blach is making his fifth start in place of Bumgarner, who is expected to be out until at least July. The 26-year-old bounced back from the worst outing of his career last Thursday, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings in a 3-2 loss to the Reds. Blach is 1-1 with a 1.13 ERA in three career outings (two starts) against the Dodgers, including five solid innings on April 25.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers LHP Alex Wood was named NL Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 with 11 scoreless innings against Pittsburgh and Colorado.

2. San Francisco C Buster Posey has five home runs in his last seven games.

3. The Dodgers optioned OF Brett Eibner to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room on the roster for RHP Brandon McCarthy, who started Monday’s game.
