KEY STAT: Scotland have not trailed at the break in their last three matches at Wembley

EXPERT VERDICT: England have failed to convince in their three World Cup qualifiers and are likely to make hard work of beating Scotland at Wembley. Scotland will probably get 11 men behind the ball on a regular basis and England may take a while to find a way through but eventually the extra class in the final third should tell.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw-England double result

KEY STAT: All four previous matches between these countries have produced under 2.5 goals

EXPERT VERDICT: Punters know all about the rise of Northern Ireland having witnessed their march to the knockout stage of Euro 2016, and now it looks like another minnow, Azerbaijan, are coming to the party. Robert Prosinecki’s men have picked up seven points from three qualifiers courtesy of 1-0 wins against San Marino and Norway and an impressive 0-0 draw in Czech Republic and they can hold the favourites.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Austria are unbeaten in ten home competitive matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Ireland have made a decent start to their World Cup qualifying campaign but their chances of progressing could take a hit when they face an Austrian side with a point to prove. If Austria can recapture their Euro 2016 qualifying form then they have an excellent chance of claiming all three points.

RECOMMENDATION: Austria

KEY STAT: Serbia are unbeaten in their last seven matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Wales had a wonderful run through to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 but qualifying for the World Cup looks a tough ask in such a tight group. Chris Coleman welcomes back some key men who were missing from the draw against Georgia but Serbia have started well and can frustrate Wales in Cardiff.

KEY STAT: Andre Silva has scored four in four for Portugal

EXPERT VERDICT: European champions Portugal are a very warm order to beat Latvia and they should do so with the minimum of fuss. Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to cause the most problems for the Latvians but Porto’s Andre Silva has been firing in the goals for his club and could also play a significant part.

RECOMMENDATION: A Silva first goalscorer

Tropical Depression
The Carolina Hurricanes have yet to win back-to-back games this season. While goal scoring has not been much of an issue, as they have two or more goals in nine of their first 11, offense has tailed off recently. They're averaging just 1.7 goals per game (GPG) over the past three while the defense/goaltending has allowed at least two goals in each of their 11 outings this season. Eddie Lack has been especially poor when given opportunities to start, posting a 3.80 Goals-Against Average (GAA) in his four appearances thus far. The Hurricanes travel to New Jersey Tuesday for the second half of a home-and-home after getting pounded 4-1 in Raleigh Sunday.

Capital Punishment
The Washington Capitals play host to the San Jose Sharks Tuesday night in D.C., and Alexander Ovechkin and company are looking to extend their winning streak to six games. The Capitals are averaging 3.8 GPG during their current five-game win streak, and they are allowing 2.0 GPG during the span. The Sharks enter 1-4 in their past five games on the road, and 1-4 in their past five against teams with a winning record, while the Caps have won 42 of their past 58 at home. However, if Washington is going to push their win streak to six they will need to turn around some ugly history against San Jose. The Sharks have won 11 of their past 12 visits to the nation's capital, while going 22-4-1 in the past 27 meetings in this series. The road team is victorious in six of the past seven. The 'under' has been hot for San Jose lately, going 8-0-1 in their past nine, and the under is 6-2-1 in the past nine meetings in this series in Washington.

Looking Ahead

Tuesday, Oct. 25
The Red Wings have dropped five in a row, and they're just 7-19 in their past 26 games on the road. They head back to Philadelphia, where they lost a 4-3 decision in overtime Nov. 2. The Red Wings were leading late, but Mark Streit hit an even-strength goal with 1:04 to force overtime, and the Flyers won it in the extra session. The Red Wings are 1-4 in the past five meetings in this series, and a dismal 0-12 in their past 12 in Philly. The home team is a robust 24-3 in the past 27 in this series. ... The Coyotes travel to Denver to tangle with the Avalanche. Arizona has been snowed in over the past eight meetings, winning just twice. The 'under' is 10-3 in the past 13 meetings in Denver. ... Dallas and Winnipeg meet for the third time already this season. The Stars won 3-2 at home Oct. 24 against the Jets, while Winnipeg struck for a 4-1 win Oct. 27 in their building. This one is back at MTS Centre in Manitoba.

Wednesday, Oct. 26
The Blackhawks head down to St. Louis to battle the Blues on a light slate Wednesday. These two sides met on the west side of Chicago on opening night, and the Blues came away victorious, 5-2. Chicago has figured out their offense lately, going for three or more goals in six straight games while limiting the opponent to 1.3 GPG during their current six-game win streak. The Blues have won three straight games at home and the 'under' is 4-1 in their past five games in their own building. ... The Ducks travel to Ohio's capital city looking for revenge after dropping a 4-0 decision at home to the Blue Jackets Oct. 28. Columbus has been stout lately, picking up points in seven of their past eight games (5-1-2). They enter on a three-game win streak at home, including a 10-0 whitewashing of the NHL-leading Canadiens Nov. 4.

Thursday, Oct. 27
The Predators host the Blues in Music City, and this rivalry has been a bit one-sided in recent seasons. Dating back to Feb. 23, 2012, St. Louis is an impressive 15-4 in the past 19 meetings, including 7-3 in their past 10 trips to Nashville. Early on in this series, the 'under' was the play, but lately we have seen a lot of fireworks between the two sides. The 'over' is 7-3-3 in the past 13 meetings. ... The Flames host the Stars in the first meeting between these teams this season. The Flames are 3-1-1 in the past five meetings with the Stars, and each of the past two meetings at the Saddledome have been determined in a shootout, while each of the past three meetings in Calgary have been one-goal games.

Friday, Oct. 28
The Stars continue their road trip in Northern Alberta against the high-flying Oilers. This series has been anything but high-scoring lately, though, with the 'under' going 12-4-2 in the past 18 meetings dating back to Jan. 26, 2011, including 6-1-2 in the past nine meetings in Edmonton. The 'under' has cashed in four straight on home ice for the Oilers in their new building heading into the new week. ... Colorado hosts Winnipeg for the second time this season. The first matchup Oct. 28 resulted in a 1-0 win by the Jets, and two of the past three games for the Avalanche at home have had a 1-0 score (one win, one loss). Five of the past seven meetings in this series have resulted in an 'under' play. Winnipeg enters Friday's game on a three-game win streak in the series, including each of the past two in Denver.

Preview: Oilers (9-3) at Penguins (8-2)

Date: November 08, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

PITTSBURGH -- Sidney Crosby, meet Connor McDavid. Connor McDavid, meet Sidney Crosby.

Oh, the NHL's most celebrated draft pick of the 2000s - Crosby, back when he was The Kid - and the most celebrated of the 2010s - McDavid, who's succeeded Crosby in being The Kid, but isn't quite yet the man -- have already met in person.

That handshake occurred a couple of years ago when McDavid played junior hockey in Erie, Pa., about 125 miles north of Pittsburgh. Crosby and Penguins co-owner Mario Lemieux, himself a former Canadian wunderkind, went to visit.

But Crosby, arguably hockey's biggest star, and McDavid, hockey's brightest young star, haven't met on the ice. Until now.

Could be perfect timing, too.

McDavid's Edmonton Oilers, coming off a 2-1 win in Detroit and No. 2 overall in the Western Conference, take to the ice on Tuesday to face Crosby's Penguins, coming off a 3-0-1 road trip and No. 3 overall in the Eastern Conference. The meeting is perhaps the NHL's most intriguing matchup so far in a season that's only about a month old.

While it will be a head-to-head meeting only if Oilers coach Todd McLellan and Penguins coach Mike Sullivan choose to match their top lines against each other, it's the kind of competition that can drive a skilled player. And the teams they play for; the Oilers are off to a promising 9-3-1 start, including a 5-1-1 road record; the Penguins are 9-3-1, and are 5-0-1 on home ice.

Now 29, Crosby can remember his early days in the NHL in 2005-06 and his initial matchups against players such as Peter Forsberg. Crosby knows McDavid will be compared to him before, during and after the interconference game at PPG Paints Arena.

"Your competitive side takes over in such games," Crosby said Monday. "There are matchups like that every night, but some aren't talked about as much as others. ... Competition is why you play, and what you love, obviously some (matchups) are talked about more than others, and (Tuesday) night will be one that's talked about more."

For good reason, too. Despite his age, McDavid - with his five goals and nine assists for 14 points - is rapidly pushing the Oilers into a bracket with the NHL's better teams.

Crosby, of course, is the primary reason why the Penguins won a second Stanley Cup last season and, despite missing the team's first six games to a concussion, leads the league with eight goals. He's coming off a two-goal performance Saturday in the Penguins' 5-0 win at San Jose, the team they defeated for the Stanley Cup in June.

Left wing Carl Hagelin has played only 2 1/2 games on Crosby's line this season but isn't shy about offering his praise.

"Every time he's on the ice, he wants to make a difference," Hagelin said.

The 19-year-old McDavid acknowledges looking up to Crosby while he was younger - after all, he said, Crosby's already won "basically everything there is to win" - two Stanley Cups, two Olympic gold medals, scoring titles, the Conn Smythe, the whole works.

"I don't pattern myself after him, but he is the best player in the world," McDavid told the team's website.

Whether McDavid can someday ascend to being such a player, and there's every sign he can, he'll get a chance to study the current No. 1 on Tuesday night.

Crosby recalled the first time he took on Forsberg; the Penguins lost and he was a minus-5. He realized afterward he "needed to compete, rather than just watch him."

With Crosby and McDavid both on the same 200-foot long sheet of ice for the first time in the NHL, there could be a lot to see.

"He's one of the bright young players in the league," Sullivan said of McDavid. "That team is trying to take another step, and he's a reason why."

Preview: Canucks (4-8) at Rangers (10-3)

Date: November 08, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- The New York Rangers can't lose. The Vancouver Canucks can't win.

On Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, nothing has to give.

The Rangers have won five in a row, scoring at least five goals in each victory. As was the case in many of their victories this season, the Rangers (10-3-0) won with balance Sunday, as five players scored in a 5-2 victory against the Winnipeg Jets.

One of those goal-scorers was rookie Pavel Buchnevich, who scored artfully on a breakaway for his second goal of the season. The third-round pick found the going tough to start the season but is showing signs of getting comfortable, which potentially means another dangerous scorer for the NHL's top offensive team.

"He's just getting more and more comfortable with everything," Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist said to the New York Daily News. "Coming here from Russia, it's a big change culture-wise and language and the way we play the game. So he's just getting more comfortable. He's going to be a great player here. Fun to watch him play, too."

As weird as it sounds, the Rangers didn't feel great after their latest five-goal performance. The game was tied 2-2 midway through the second period before the Rangers blitzed the Jets for three quick goals, then held on tight during the third period and didn't muster a shot on net.

That is becoming normal for the Rangers -- scoring five goals, winning by three and not feeling as if they played well.

"We definitely have got to be careful of starting to cheat and getting away from the way we want to play," Rangers defenseman Marc Staal told the Daily News on Sunday. "I thought for stretches last night and tonight we started stretching the zone a little bit and started looking for things that weren't there. So as a group we've got to make sure we buckle back down, start playing the way we need to play defensively to create those opportunities in the right way."

The Canucks, meanwhile, are in a tailspin that has no signs of ending.

After starting 4-0-0, Vancouver has lost nine consecutive games, including a 4-2 defeat to the New York Islanders on Monday night. So not only are the Canucks playing some of the worst hockey in the NHL, but they get to play a Rangers team that has been off since Sunday.

The Canucks held a brief early lead against the Islanders and were tied at 2 in the third period before the Islanders struck for two goals in less than two minutes to put the game away.

"First two periods, we played good hockey," Canucks goaltender Ryan Miller said. "Then they get weird bounces and take the game. It's frustrating right now."

The Canucks (4-8-1) are 0-8-1 in their past nine games. The last time they lost 10 in a row was from Oct. 23-Nov. 11, 1997, so it is almost the 18-year anniversary of their futility.

"Three of their goals, our guys go to block them and they end up in favorable situations," Miller said to the Vancouver Sun. "We have to find ways to rise up when games unfold that way."

The way the Rangers are playing lately, overcoming bounces and a superior opponent won't be easy.

Preview: Hurricanes (3-5) at Devils (5-3)

Date: November 08, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The New Jersey Devils have shown the ability to respond from some not-so-solid performances and that mindset could go a long way in helping the team navigate through the season.

The Carolina Hurricanes haven't been quite so in tune with dodging rough patches during the first few weeks of the season.

But Tuesday night at New Jersey, the Hurricanes aim to get on track because they've gone four games without winning in regulation.

"I think we could have a better sense of urgency," said Carolina coach Bill Peters, who pointed out that he's pondering potential lineup changes. "I think it's more about us."

The Devils picked up their first road victory Sunday night by winning 4-1 at Carolina. Next, they try to avoid their first home loss.

"Now we go back (home) with a better feeling," left winger Mike Cammalleri said.

New Jersey is 4-0-1 at home, a mark that has allowed them to avoid a miserable start to the season.

The Hurricanes have been decent on the road, picking up points in five of eight games on the way to a 2-3-3 road record.

In the first meeting with the Hurricanes this season, the Devils benefited from Cammalleri's hat trick after he hadn't scored in the first 10 games of the season.

"He had an urgency level to his game," New Jersey coach John Hynes said. "(On his) first goal, there was a second and a third chance he had to keep the puck in and really worked to be able to get himself in that scoring situation. It was nice to see him moving his feet. That's when he's at his best."

The Devils are looking for the sudden spark from Cammalleri to create momentum. They've seen him go on tears before.

"That was good to see," New Jersey goalie Keith Kinkaid said. "He definitely deserves it."

The Hurricanes are in a wait-and-see situation regarding defenseman Justin Faulk, who's considered one of the team's anchors. He left in the third period of the last game with an undisclosed injury. In vague terms, Peters described the ailment to be an upper-body or middle-body injury.

Regardless, the Hurricanes are in search of consistency and something to jolt the offense into shape.

"Our transition game could be better," Peters said.

Carolina went 0-for-4 on power plays Sunday and the Hurricanes will look for better production in that area in the rematch.

"It comes down to execution," Peters said of the power play. "It comes down to confidence and it comes down to all five guys doing their part. If you start getting frustrated and you start taking it easy, you're out. If you think it's going to be easy, it's not. Penalty killers are hard workers on every level, especially in the National Hockey League."

Perhaps sensing the workload piling up after games on the weekend on back-to-back nights, Peters called off Monday's scheduled on-ice workout. The Hurricanes are amid a stretch of five games in eight nights.

For New Jersey, Tuesday night's game will be one of only two home outings during a 10-game span of the schedule.

Preview: Red Wings (6-6) at Flyers (6-6)

Date: November 08, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

PHILADELPHIA -- The Detroit Red Wings are hoping left winger Tyler Bertuzzi can bring them some of the net-front presence that his uncle so often did when the 21-year-old forward makes his NHL debut Tuesday night in Philadelphia.

With the Red Wings (6-6-1) on a five-game losing streak and Thomas Vanek on long-term injury reserve, the Red Wings recalled Bertuzzi from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League on Monday. Detroit plans to insert him into the lineup against the Flyers (6-6-1).

"When he's playing well, he's a guy who's on the puck a lot," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill told CBS Detroit. "He's got a good reach and stick on pucks so he creates turnovers. He finds a way to hard areas of the ice. He can shoot the puck from in tight areas, finds a way to score in those tight areas and gets to the net hard."

That's something the Red Wings haven't done much of during their losing streak, in which they have scored just nine goals. They've averaged just 28.1 shots per game this season, third-lowest in the league.

"As a team, the one thing we've talked about is we need to do a better job of getting to the net front, we need to do a better job of shooting the puck and I think he does those two things," Blashill said.

Bertuzzi, a 6-foot-1, 190-pounder, practiced on a line with Frans Nielsen and Dylan Larkin on Monday, but that was just to give captain Henrik Zetterberg a maintenance day. Bertuzzi is expected to play on the second or third line.

"I just want to bring energy," he said. "Play my game, keep doing what I do and just bring energy. Block shots, play good defensively and just take my chances when I get them."

Ironically, the Red Wings will be facing one of the NHL's loosest teams defensively. The Flyers have allowed the second-most goals in the league behind Calgary and only the Arizona Coyotes have surrendered more goals per game than the Flyers' 3.69.

Look for Flyers goaltender Steve Mason (2-4-0, 3.46 GAA, .878 SP) to return to action Tuesday night after Michal Neuvirth (4-2-0, 3.57, .859) started the past four games, including a wild 4-3 overtime win against the Red Wings on Nov. 2.

Detroit blew a 3-2 lead in the final 64 seconds of that game.

Mason has not played since Oct. 29 when he was pulled in favor of Neuvirth after allowing three goals on 13 shots in a loss to the Penguins.

"I think both guys would look back on a couple of plays and say they need to be a little bit better," Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said of his goaltenders. "I think that's an honest approach and, like many other areas of our game, I think that's one area that we can improve upon a little bit. Everything we do is a team game."

The Flyers are close to getting forward Scott Laughton back. He skated with the team on Monday after a two-game conditioning stint with the AHL Lehigh Valley Phantoms, with whom he picked up a goal and two assists. Laughton ended last season with a concussion and reportedly injured his left knee in training camp.

Preview: Kings (6-6) at Maple Leafs (5-4)

Date: November 08, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

TORONTO -- The Los Angeles Kings will be seeing a lot of Canada in the next few days.

The Kings will play the first four games of a five-game trip against Canadian teams starting Tuesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre.

"It's nice to play four of the Canadian teams," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said Monday before the team traveled to Toronto. "Counting Ottawa, Ottawa was one of the original teams, too. That gets overlooked. So to play the historic teams is something I look forward to, always playing in those Canadian cities."

The Kings (6-6-0) next travel to Montreal, Ottawa and Winnipeg before finishing the trip in Colorado.

"All those teams have (good players)," Sutter said. "At the top end of the draft they've added lottery players, so they're all looked on or should be as good teams because of the skill sets that those kids bring."

The Kings will face a young Maple Leafs team that plays well at home, is growing in confidence and has won three games in a row.

The Kings have won two games in a row, including a 5-0 verdict over the Calgary Flames on Saturday in Los Angeles.

"Obviously, L.A.'s plan is to wear you down and make you make mistakes," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said Monday. "We have to do the same to them."

The Maple Leafs (5-4-3) defeated the Vancouver Canucks Saturday in a fight-filled game that could be looked at as a team-building victory.

"It's good for our group," Babcock said. "We're 4-1 at home and want to be really good at home and get going better on the road. I thought our team played well last game. We didn't give up very much. We were able to win a game without our goalie (Frederik Andersen) being the first star, which is nice. We're not against Andy being first star but we don't need it every night. But I think it all just leads to confidence."

Improvement in goaltending has given the Kings a boost.

Peter Budaj made 24 saves for his first NHL shutout since Oct. 28, 2013, in the win over the Flames at Staples Center.

"He's given us a chance to win, and that's what we're looking for," Sutter said. "We're not asking for Jonathan Quick. It's like talking about a player coming into the lineup for an injury. That's exactly what he did. Give him the opportunity, give it back, that's all. Our first three games, for the lack of a better word, our first three games was awful goaltending. Since then, our goaltending's been good enough to give us a chance to win. The first three games it wasn't that."

Quick suffered a groin injury in the first period of the Kings' first game of the season Oct. 12 and is not expected to return until January.

Budaj has made nine consecutive starts and has a 6-3-0 record, a 2.06 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage.

Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri escaped further penalty from the league after his blindside hit on Vancouver's Daniel Sedin, who was taking the shot that resulted in the Canucks' third goal of the game on Saturday. After the third-period hit, there were several fights for the remainder of the game. Kadri, who feels the check was shoulder to shoulder, received a five-minute charging penalty and a game misconduct as a result of the hit as well as a fighting major when Vancouver's Jannik Hansen went after him as Sedin went down.

Preview: Senators (7-4) at Predators (3-5)

Date: November 08, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

The search for consistency continues.

That's the Reader's Digest version of the Nashville Predators' 3-5-3 start, which is causing plenty of concern about a team which some thought could win the Stanley Cup this preseason.

Instead, they are sitting in the Central Division cellar and although there are 71 games left in the season, they can't afford to get too far in the hole.

So there figures to be some urgency for Nashville when it hosts the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night at Bridgestone Arena for the second contest of its four-game homestand. Then again, the same urgency existed Saturday night, but it lost 3-2 in a shootout to Carolina.

After converting only one of four first period breakaways, the Predators were blatantly outplayed in the second period, then coughed up a game-tying shorthanded goal in the third period to set the stage for their second straight shootout failure.

"There is no excuse for the effort in the second period," defenseman Matt Irwin said. "We have to be better. We know it in here, and there's no one to point the finger, but ourselves."

Nashville averages only 2.5 goals and allows 3.2, correctly reflecting the fact that it hasn't been able to consistently generate pressure or prevent opponents from doing the same. It's third from the bottom in Corsi at 46.23 per 100 shots.

While a strong Corsi ranking doesn't guarantee success -- Toronto and Carolina rank in the top 10, for instance, and 10-1-1 Montreal is 24th -- it usually tells an accurate tale over 82 games. The tale it tells for the Predators is of inconsistency.

"It's not good enough, and that's the bottom line," Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said. "Nobody is going to sit here and say that it's been good enough because it hasn't. We have to continue to work to get better. It's frustrating."

Meanwhile, Ottawa (7-4-0) is off to a surprisingly quick start under first-year coach Guy Boucher. Although the Senators are coming off a 2-1 loss Saturday night to Buffalo, they have largely exceeded expectations with stingy defense, permitting only three goals in the last four games.

Boucher's point of emphasis has been improving the team's defense from last season.

"It starts with a mindset, which we have," Boucher said. "We're asking our players to be reliable defensively, which they've bought into, which is very difficult to do in such little time. I've been very impressed."

Despite dealing with his wife's cancer battle, goaltender Craig Anderson has been outstanding, going 6-2-0 with a 2.21 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage. Anderson, who will play against the Predators, has ceded three goals in his last 124 shots.

The one weakness of late for Ottawa has been burying its chances. It scored only four goals in three games last week, and the lack of offense finally caught up with it against Buffalo when goalie Robin Lehner outdueled Anderson.

"We were generating chances," left wing Mike Hoffman said. "At the end of the day, that's what we want to do. Some days they're going to go in and some days, they're not."

Preview: Coyotes (4-7) at Avalanche (5-6)

Date: November 08, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Teams usually take a day off after playing on consecutive days but for the struggling Colorado Avalanche, there are no breaks when trying to turn things around.

After beating Minnesota at home Saturday and losing at St. Louis on Sunday, the Avalanche were practicing Monday morning.

Granted both weekend games were matinees, but putting players on the ice right away -- with the Arizona Coyotes in town Tuesday night -- speaks to Colorado's struggles.

The biggest problem right now is scoring. Colorado has three goals in the last four games but was able to win one of them 1-0 because of Calvin Pickard's 32-save shutout against the Wild.

"We've got to look at each other and look at ourselves in the mirror," defenseman Francois Beauchemin said. "We can all get more. It's not one, two, three, four guys; it's everybody that's got to step up their game. When we all play together we're a good team but when we were down a few guys things are not working. We really need everybody to work hard and help make the system out."

The Avalanche were without fourth-line forward Blake Comeau for Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Blues because of a groin injury. His status for Tuesday has not been announced.

The remedy for their struggles might be another team that is struggling. The Coyotes are off to a disappointing 4-7 start and were dominated by Anaheim in a 5-1 loss Friday.

That prompted a spirited practice Sunday.

"I hope they're frustrated," coach Dave Tippet told the Arizona Republic. "You look at our record, we're not near what we're capable of."

Like the Avalanche, the Coyotes are dealing with injuries. Center Martin Hanzal won't play against Colorado because of a lower-body injury that has kept him out of the last two games. He has not started skating but the team hopes he can return within the week.

Arizona could get defenseman Michael Stone back in the lineup. Stone has missed the last four games with an upper-body injury.

Stone took part in some of Sunday's practice, which the team hopes will kick start an upward swing.

"I felt like we needed a practice like that, and I think everybody battled hard," defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson told the Arizona Republic. "That's all we have to do, especially after a game like the other night. We didn't show up at all. We didn't play good enough, we didn't try hard enough, so I think that was a good practice to get it out of our system and move forward here."

Colorado has won only two games in two weeks, and one of them came in Arizona on Oct. 29.

The Avalanche will play Tuesday's game with heavy hearts after it was announced Marek Svatos, who played seven seasons in Colorado, died Saturday night. He is survived by his wife, Diana, and two children.

Center Matt Duchene and forward Cody McLeod are the only remaining Avalanche to be teammates with Svatos. Team vice president and governor Joe Sakic played five seasons with Svatos and was shaken by the news.

"Only 34. It's sad," Sakic told The Denver Post. "We feel for Diana and the boys and his family, and our condolences go out to them. It's tough. It's tough for them."

Grand Salami - November

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

NBA roundup: Curry drains record 13 treys
By The Sports Xchange

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Stephen Curry rebounded from his first game without a 3-pointer in almost two years by sinking an NBA-record 13 from beyond the arc during a 46-point performance Monday night, leading the Golden State Warriors to a 116-106 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.
Curry provided the late cushion for the Warriors, burying an 11th, 12th and record-setting 13th 3-pointer on consecutive possessions that turned a five-point game into a 109-97 advantage with just 2:23 to play.
After his 157-game stretch with at least one 3-pointer was snapped when he went 0-for-10 against the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, Curry finished 13 of 17 from beyond the arc Monday. He broke the record of 12 3-pointers that was set by Kobe Bryant in 2003 and tied by Donyell Marshall two years later.
Klay Thompson finished with 24 points on 11-of-20 shooting, and Kevin Durant added 22 points for the Warriors. Davis led the Pelicans with 33 points and 13 rebounds.

Clippers 114, Pistons 82
LOS ANGELES -- Chris Paul had 24 points, eight assists and six rebounds, and Los Angeles crushed Detroit.
J.J. Redick scored 20 points for the Clippers, who beat the Pistons for the 11th consecutive time. Blake Griffin had 13 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for Los Angeles, which won its third straight overall.
Andre Drummond scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Pistons, while Tobias Harris finished with 12 points.

Rockets 114, Wizards 106
WASHINGTON -- James Harden scored 14 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 15 assists as Houston pushed back scuffling Washington.
The Rockets made 17 of 37 3-pointers and shot 51.9 percent from the field as they pulled away over the final seven minutes.
Washington guard John Wall had 21 points and eight assists on the night he passed Wes Unseld for the franchise's assists record. He was ejected with 33 seconds remaining after receiving his second technical foul. Bradley Beal and Otto Porter each scored 20 points for the Wizards.

Hornets 122, Pacers 100
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Kemba Walker had 24 points and 10 assists in less than three quarters of action, and the Hornets won their third straight game.
Charlotte (5-1) is off to the best start in franchise history.
The Hornets reversed a season-long trend of slow starts and erupted for 43 first-quarter points, hitting 11 of their first 13 shots from the field and scoring on their first 12 possessions. They led by as many as 21 in the first quarter.
The Pacers (3-4) fell to 0-4 on the road this season. C.J. Miles led the Pacers with 23 points.

Jazz 109, 76ers 84
PHILADELPHIA -- Gordon Hayward scored 20 points and Derrick Favors had season highs of 16 points and 14 rebounds as the Jazz won easily.
Rodney Hood added 18 points for Utah, which won for the fourth time in five games despite the absence of veteran point guard George Hill. Hill is averaging 20.4 points a game and sat out the game after spraining his right thumb in Sunday's victory over the New York Knicks.
Jahlil Okafor notched 15 points and Joel Embiid had 14 points and nine rebounds for Philadelphia, which fell to 0-6. The Sixers, the Eastern Conference's only winless team, dropped their 43rd straight October/November game dating back to a victory over Milwaukee on Nov. 22, 2013.

Bulls 112, Magic 80
CHICAGO -- Coming off a lethargic loss, Chicago emphatically ended its three-game losing streak with a victory against Orlando at the United Center.
After losing 111-94 at the Indiana Pacers on Saturday, the Bulls (4-3) entered this game looking for more energy from start to finish. That's exactly the formula they used to snap the three-game winning streak of the Magic (3-4).
Jimmy Butler led the charge for the Bulls, who broke the game open by outscoring Orlando 27-11 in the third quarter. Butler had nine points and three steals in the third and finished with a game-high 20 points to go with seven assists, four steals and five rebounds.

Thunder 97, Heat 85
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Enes Kanter scored 24 points off the bench to lead Oklahoma City to a victory over Miami at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Kanter shot 10 of 12 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line while hauling in 10 rebounds in only 18 minutes of action. Victor Oladipo scored 17 points while rookie Domantas Sabonis scored a career-high 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Thunder guard Russell Westbrook had his lowest scoring output of the season with 14 points. But he handed out 11 assists, which was more than all of the Heat starters combined.

Preview: Suns (2-5) at Trail Blazers (4-3)

Date: November 08, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

Tuesday's matchup between the Portland Trail Blazers and the Phoenix Suns at the Moda Center in Portland, Ore., features two of the hottest young guards in the NBA -- and we're not talking about Damian Lillard.

Portland's CJ McCollum matched his career high with 37 points to lift the Trail Blazers (4-3) past the Memphis Grizzlies 100-94 Sunday at the FedEx Forum.

Phoenix's Devin Booker scored career-high 38 points in Friday's 112-111 victory over New Orleans, then followed that with a new career high of 39 points in a 119-108 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.

McCollum, 25, scored 16 of his points in the fourth quarter during a game when backcourt mate Lillard struggled to a 3-for-11 shooting performance, in part due to minor thumb and ankle injuries. McCollum was 13 for 23 from the field, including 6 for 12 on 3-pointers.

"We needed CJ in this one, and he came through big-time," Lillard said.

While Lillard has played well enough to earn mention in early Most Valuable Player discussions, McCollum has quietly averaged 21.4 points. That's on pace to exceed the fourth-year pro's scoring totals of a year ago, when he averaged 20.8 points and earned the NBA's Most Improved Player Award.

"I've been getting the shots I've worked on, been getting to my spots," McCollum said. "I don't really worry about making or missing shots. That will even out over the course of a season. I want to be in a good flow. I felt that way (against the Grizzlies)."

Booker, who turned 20 on Oct. 30, became the youngest player in NBA history with back-to-back games of at least 38 points. It's also the first time a Suns player has scored at least 38 in consecutive games since Tom Chambers in 1990. Booker is one of eight players in league history to post multiple scoring games of at least 38 points under the age of 21.

"It doesn't matter," Booker told reporters afterward. "It's another game, especially after we lose. If we win, I get more excited about it. It's about wins and losses. Maybe later in my career, I can look back at things like that, but now I'm in the mindset where I am ready to get wins.

"Everybody looks good when you win. That's what we're trying to do. Scoring as many points as you want and not making the playoffs is not a good look. My ultimate goal is to make the playoffs."

Booker, who is averaging 23.0 points in the regular season, bombed in 34 points while playing only the first three quarters of a preseason contest in Portland. He scored only 15 in the Suns' 118-115 overtime victory over the Blazers at US Airways Center last Wednesday.

Both teams are hoping for improved defensive performances. Phoenix is last in the NBA in scoring defense (113.3 points per game) and 22nd in opponents' field-goal percentage (.452). Portland is 25th in scoring defense (109.3) but the Blazers have climbed into a tie for sixth in opponents' field-goal percentage (.436).

"We've been good defensively since the second half of the Phoenix game," Lillard said. "It's something we want to do. We want to be a better team; everybody is taking that challenge. Every possession, it means something to me. Like, 'I'm not going to get hit by pick-and-rolls.' I think everybody has that type of attitude."

Preview: Mavericks (1-5) at Lakers (4-3)

Date: November 08, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- The growth spurt of the youthful Los Angeles Lakers has sprung faster than expected.

"I came into this job with an open mind," Lakers first-year coach Luke Walton said Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Times, after his club recorded a 119-108 victory over the Phoenix Suns. "They haven't shown me anything to say that they're immature other than the age of a lot of them. They've come to work every single day since we've been here, even before training camp. Their actions speak loud. They're grown men that are in this to get better and to be as good as they can."

The Lakers will go for their fourth consecutive win when the Dallas Mavericks visit Staples Center on Tuesday.

By beating the Suns, the Lakers (4-3) captured their third straight win for the first time since the 2012-13 season. They also are above the .500 mark after seven games since the Lakers started the 2011-12 campaign with an identical record.

The win over the Suns followed a stunning 20-point rout of the Golden State Warriors on Friday and a surprising road decision over the Atlanta Hawks last Wednesday.

Against Phoenix, the Lakers got valuable contributions from several players, with six scoring in double figures, but none were more notable than Nick Young, who finished with 22 points and seven rebounds. Young spent much of last season on the bench, being a frequent target of the hard-line ways of former Lakers coach Byron Scott.

Los Angeles is 3-0 at home.

"We won 17 games last year," said forward Larry Nance Jr., according to the Times. Nance won't play against the Mavericks after suffering a concussion in the first half against the Suns. "What are we, 4-3? That's not enough success to get to anybody's head at this point. We're all still hungry and humble and really excited to keep going."

The Mavericks, who won their first game of the season Sunday night against the Milwaukee Bucks, are hoping to extend their 10-game winning streak over the Lakers, taking the last five at Staples. However, they will have to do so without Dirk Nowitzki, who won't play because of a sore Achilles. The 38-year-old Nowitzki hasn't been available since missing the second half of a 105-95 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday.

Dallas also might be without point guard Deron Williams (strained left calf), who is listed as doubtful for the Lakers' game.

Despite the pair's absences against the Bucks, the Mavericks (1-5) snapped a five-game skid behind a career-best 34 points from Harrison Barnes in an 86-75 overtime win.

"This was just a case of outlasting an opponent," said Dallas coach Rick Carlisle, according to the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. "On defense, we were great. You look at the whole game and we had a plan -- we got down early -- but we stuck with it."

"We made these guys beat us in the half-court game and these games can be ugly. But in our situation right now, it's what we have to do to win games."
