Preview: Islanders (7-5) at Sharks (6-7)

Date: November 10, 2015 10:30 PM EDT

The San Jose Sharks rolled through the first week of the season before the New York Islanders handed them their first loss as part of their own strong start.

Less than a month later, these teams are struggling heading into Tuesday night's matchup, but the Sharks appear to have the edge with the Islanders not winning in regulation in San Jose in almost 13 years.

The Sharks won their first four games before losing 6-3 in New York on Oct. 17, as the Islanders rallied with four unanswered goals. That was part of a 6-2-1 start for New York.

Things have not gone well for either team since. The defeat in Brooklyn began a 3-7-0 stretch for the Sharks, while the Islanders are 1-3-2 in their last six.

San Jose's problems can be traced to special teams, as it's gone 5 for 42 on the power play and allowed opponents to go 11 for 46 to rank near the bottom of the NHL in both categories.

The Sharks (7-7-0) failed to score on four opportunities in a 1-0 loss to visiting Anaheim on Saturday, dropping to 0 for 11 with a man advantage in their last four overall and 0 for 19 this season at home.

"Obviously our power play didn't click," coach Peter DeBoer said. "It's not like we're not establishing possession, getting in, looking dangerous, getting chances. We just have to stick with it and know that eventually those are going to go in for us."

That could happen against New York, which has allowed a power-play goal in each of its last three games after killing all 26 in its previous nine, and like the Sharks is struggling to score with the advantage - and overall.

The Islanders have nine goals in their past six games after scoring 31 in the first nine. New York (7-5-3) lost 2-1 at home to Boston on Sunday, going 1 for 7 on the power play.

'We have to battle through it,' coach Jack Capuano said. 'We had chances on the power play and didn't capitalize. I feel for the guys. We've done some good things - we're in a rut right now. We just have to keep working hard.'

Kyle Okposo had the game-winning goal and two assists against the Sharks last month but has been held to five points in the last 10 games. John Tavares registered 11 in the first eight before being held without one in his past four.

"Not scoring, it's frustrating," said Taveras, who recently missed three games with an illness. "You just gotta work through it. It's all you can do."

San Jose is 5-0-1 at home in the series since the Islanders won 3-0 on Feb. 19, 2003. New York also faces Los Angeles and Anaheim on its trip.

"We've got three pretty tough teams that we're playing that are obviously high-powered veteran teams," Capuano said. " ... We've only had six defensemen here for a while and going out west we're probably going to need another defenseman with us."

The Islanders addressed that need Monday by recalling Adam Pelech from the AHL. The 2012 third-round pick had two goals and two assists with a team-high plus-9 rating in 14 games for Bridgeport.

Preview: Coyotes (7-6) at Kings (9-5)

Date: November 10, 2015 10:30 PM EDT

When the Los Angeles Kings and Arizona Coyotes met a month ago, the former was in the middle of a season-opening skid and latter was beginning a promising winning streak.

Things have since shifted back toward what's been expected of the two teams in recent seasons, which the Kings can further Tuesday night at Staples Center as the Coyotes try to sweep a back-to-back set in Southern California.

In Saturday's 4-1 home win over Florida, Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles (9-5-0) improved to 9-2-0 since losing its first three games by a 12-2 total. The power play went 0 for 13 in that time and is 9 for 32 (28.1 percent) since with goals in three straight games.

"If we had the answers for how to score in this league, I think we'd have a few more," coach Darryl Sutter said. "Most of the goals are scored through special teams, through one-timers and through jam plays around the net. Tonight they were all scored like that."

Jeff Carter had a goal and an assist, giving him goals in three straight games and seven with six assists over his last nine.

"It's great to see him kind of take it over and lead the team in the right direction, turning it around after the 0-3 start," Milan Lucic told the team's official website. "He's one of those guys that wants to score and wants to be a part of contributing to a team's success, and that's what you need out of your big guys and your leaders."

Another of those leaders, Jonathan Quick, got back on track after allowing 10 goals in his previous three games. Since the losing streak, he's 7-2-0 with a 1.77 goals-against average and .935 save percentage.

The Coyotes (7-6-1) opened the season series with a 4-1 win in Los Angeles on Oct. 9, but the Kings have won four of the last six with Quick going 3-1-1 with a 1.77 GAA.

That led to a three-game winning streak but was followed by a 3-6-1 span before Monday's 4-3 overtime victory in Anaheim. The Coyotes fell behind 2-0 in the first, took a 3-2 lead in the second, and lost it in the middle of the third before Mikkel Boedker's breakaway winner on a mid-ice turnover.

Boedker added an assist and has 10 points in seven games, while Max Domi scored twice and has 13 points in his first 14 NHL games. The 20-year-old rookie had a goal and an assist against the Kings.

"They were opportunistic," coach Dave Tippett told the team's official website. "The guys played well all over the ice but when you get that opportunity to score, that's what separates them. Max is one of those guys that finds an opportunity to score and takes it."

Anders Lindback faced the Ducks and has been the superior choice in goal with a 1.99 GAA in two starts and three relief appearances, but Mike Smith will be back against the Kings. Smith started the season 3-0-0 with a 0.67 GAA and .981 save percentage, but he's fallen off since with a 2-4-1 record, 4.33 GAA and .860 save percentage in his last nine games.

Smith's dazzling start included the win over the Kings, but he's 5-4-0 with a 2.97 GAA in his last 10 in the series.

Arizona was without Antoine Vermette for the sixth time in seven games Monday, while Nicklas Grossmann also missed the game, both with lower-body injuries.

Preview: Thunder (4-3) at Wizards (3-3)

Date: November 10, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Kevin Durant is reportedly the apple of the Washington Wizards' collective eye, though he's still the opponent - for now, at least.

Durant leads the Oklahoma City Thunder into D.C. on Tuesday night in what will be his final regular-season game in his hometown before he becomes a free agent.

The Thunder (4-3) ended a three-game losing streak by shooting 52.1 percent in a 124-103 win against Phoenix on Sunday. Durant scored 32 on 12-of-19 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds for his second double-double, and is again playing at an MVP-caliber level. He's averaging 30.1 points while shooting 50.3 percent, including 42.2 from 3-point range.

Oklahoma City forced 23 turnovers, contributing to a season-high 27 fast-break points. Russell Westbrook scored 21, while Enes Kanter also had 21 in 28 minutes off the bench.

"We did a better job of being aggressive and not letting people come at us, which led to us doing what we do - getting out into transition and getting steals," said Westbrook, who had 13 assists and leads the NBA with 10.9 per game.

The attention shifts to the nation's capital, where all eyes figure to be on Durant. He'll be an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career next summer, and the Wizards have handled personnel moves in a way that allows them the flexibility they'll need to pursue him.

He scored 34 in a 105-103 overtime victory at Washington on Jan. 21, a game that saw a manipulated image of Durant wearing a Washington jersey in a sponsored promotion on the Verizon Center video screen.

"You only get this opportunity once (a year). I was just happy I got to play in front of them (friends and family), and seeing my brother courtside and all my family, it was cool to get a win in front of them," Durant said. "Everybody was here, so I tried to focus on them and not worry about all that other stuff."

Durant's 30.5 scoring average against the Wizards marks his second-highest against one opponent, trailing only his 31.2 against Indiana. He's also scoring 31.5 over his last six trips to Washington.

The Wizards (3-3) have dropped two in a row while committing 50 turnovers that led to 57 points for the opposition. Though Bradley Beal and John Wall are averaging 22.7 and 19.2 points, they've made for a mistake-prone backcourt at times, combining for 8.5 turnovers per game.

Washington's 26 turnovers in Saturday's 114-99 loss at Atlanta were a season high, and they average a league-worst 19.7.

"A lot of (the turnovers) I've never seen at this level," coach Randy Wittman said. "I'd rather they threw the ball up in the upper deck 26 times so at least I could get the defense set."

Saturday's frequent mistakes overshadowed Otto Porter's career-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

"We had careless turnovers. Kind of shot ourselves in the foot," Porter said. "(It's) something that we can control. I feel like in the next couple games we're going to focus on that a lot more."

Oklahoma City, which is 3-1 on the road, is averaging 18.1 turnovers.

Wall is shooting 31.5 percent in eight career meetings with the Thunder, who have won nine of the last 12 in the series.

Preview: Jazz (4-2) at Cavaliers (6-1)

Date: November 10, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

With an ailing roster around him, a bruised quad of his own and skimpier shorts, LeBron James is still willing the Cleveland Cavaliers to victory.

The Cavaliers have worked around health issues during one of the NBA's better starts this season and seek a seventh straight victory Tuesday night against the Utah Jazz.

Cleveland (6-1) has gone unbeaten since dropping its season opener 97-95 at Chicago, playing without guards Kyrie Irving and Iman Shumpert the entire time and swingman J.R. Smith for the last three games.

James, who said this week he is wearing shorter shorts to set an example for younger athletes, carried the Cavaliers to a 101-97 win over Indiana on Sunday - their fifth victory by 10 points or fewer this season.

The game featured a gutsy effort from James, who suffered a bruised left quad during Friday's 108-102 win over Philadelphia. He remained in against the 76ers to post season highs with 31 points and 13 assists and followed with 29 points, six rebounds and four assists versus the Pacers.

The four-time MVP said a few days into the season that he wants to play all 82 games for the Cavs, who are chasing their first 7-1 start since 1988-89.

"Most guys probably wouldn't have played with what he had, and he played, and you saw how he played," coach David Blatt said. "The guy is unbelievable. He really is. I don't have a better word than that."

Kevin Love also had a strong game against Indiana with 22 points and season-high 19 rebounds. With Irving, Shumpert and Smith out, Love has been more of a focal point - even becoming the topic of a halftime talk against the Pacers because James wanted him to be more involved. He has five double-doubles and has averaged 17.0 points and 12.6 rebounds.

Cleveland needed halftime speeches in its last two home games, the first coming from James Jones after a lackadaisical start against the 76ers. Still, the Cavaliers are 4-0 at Quicken Loans Arena and 24-1 in regular-season games there since Jan. 19.

Utah (4-2) has lost three in a row and nine of 11 in Cleveland. Though the Jazz have won three straight on the road and are starting to mesh, this game marks the start of a tough four-game trip that also features stops in Miami and Atlanta.

The Jazz can lean on their defense, which has held opponents to a league-low 85.0 points per game on 39.4 percent shooting.

While the offense has been led by Gordon Heyward (15.5 points per game) and Derrick Favors (14.7 points, 9.0 rebounds), Trey Burke has been a solid option off the bench.

After opening the season by going scoreless in nearly 16 minutes during a 92-87 loss at Detroit, Burke has averaged 15.6 points in the last five games, including 24 with a career-high six 3-pointers in an 89-79 home victory over Memphis on Saturday.

"You hit a couple and you start feeling it. Start getting hot," he said. "I just try to take an approach each and every day and stay focused in on that day - trying to get better."

The Cavaliers are 15-1 in their last 16 games against the Western Conference, and they have won eight straight against the West at home.

Preview: Lakers (1-5) at Heat (4-3)

Date: November 10, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

The Miami Heat have been trading wins and losses this season, but it might not be all that difficult a habit to break in the second of a seven-game homestand.

With the Heat coming off an impressive victory, the Los Angeles Lakers visit Tuesday night following a highly discouraging loss.

The Heat (4-3) opened the homestand with Sunday's 96-76 win over Toronto, outscoring the Raptors 52-29 in the second half with a 33-14 edge from the bench for the game. They've allowed 100 points only once this season, and their 90.4 allowed per game and .409 opponent field-goal percentage are among the best in the league.

"That was really inspiring basketball in the second half," said coach Erik Spoelstra, whose team held the Raptors to 3 of 19 from 3-point range. "I think the second unit really sparked the energy of the entire team and everybody fed off that defensive energy."

On the other end, Chris Bosh scored a season-high 23 points and is coming around with an average of 20.0 over his last three games while shooting 48.8 percent from the floor. Through the first four contests, he was scoring 14.0 per game and hitting 37.7 percent.

It's come at a good time because Dwayne Wade has fallen off with 10.5 points per game on 28.6 percent shooting in his last two after scoring at least 20 and shooting 49.4 percent over the first five games.

The Heat have won six straight in the series and 10 of 11, as well as seven in a row at home. The Lakers' most recent win at Miami came in December 2008 before they went on to win the NBA title. Things couldn't be more different for Kobe Bryant and Co.

Los Angeles (1-5) followed its only win with a 99-95 loss Sunday against New York, missing 16 straight fourth-quarter shots after leading by six points.

"We just got bogged down mentally," coach Byron Scott told the team's official website. "We stopped moving the ball like we did earlier (when we) tried to explore both sides of the floor and get easy shots. Everything was contested. The defense was right in front of us. I thought we lost our focus for a little while on both ends of the court."

Bryant had 18 points on 6-of-19 shooting in possibly his last visit to Madison Square Garden, but he's not getting a ton of help. Jordan Clarkson has been a bright spot with 16.5 points per game on 49.4 percent shooting - including 45.5 from 3 point range - but the team is near the bottom of the league at 40.3 overall and 27.0 from long range.

The 37-year-old Bryant, who is averaging 16.5 points while shooting 32.0 percent and 20.8 from 3-point range, recently spoke with Scott about how he'd like his minutes handled. According to Scott, the conversation revealed much more than Bryant's desire to play back-to-back sets such as this trip through Miami and Orlando.

"His feeling was: 'You know, Coach, this might be my last year. So if possible, I'd like to try to play every game,'" Scott said. "So I'm with that with him, and we'll see how that plays out."

Bryant's previous game against the Heat - a 78-75 loss Jan. 13 - was about on par with his form lately. He went 3 of 19 for 12 points, but he's missed three of the last four meetings.

Preview: Knicks (3-4) at Raptors (5-2)

Date: November 10, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

The Toronto Raptors were ice cold to end their four-game road trip and hope a return home helps them get back on track offensively.

The New York Knicks may pose a greater defensive challenge than initially anticipated in Monday night's matchup.

Toronto (5-2) lost 96-76 to Miami on Sunday, its second consecutive defeat. The Raptors were held to 29 second-half points, their fewest since scoring 28 in a 74-72 loss at Indiana on Nov. 13, 2012.

They averaged 106.0 points and shot 39.0 percent from 3-point range in their first five games before struggling in Friday's 92-87 defeat at Orlando, shooting a season-worst 34.9 percent from the floor.

Kyle Lowry was 4 for 16 against the Heat and has gone 15 for 46 (32.6 percent) over his last three games. He shot 47.2 percent in his first four. DeMar DeRozan also shot poorly Sunday, going 5 for 14.

"I didn't get too excited when we were 5-0 and I'm not getting down now that we've had a few stinkers," coach Dwane Casey told the team's official website.

It's uncertain if DeMarre Carroll will play after sitting out Sunday to rest his sore right heel. He's shot 34.2 percent through six games, a season after posting a career-best 48.7 mark with Atlanta. James Johnson had seven points and seven rebounds while starting in his place at Miami.

"(The injury) has affected his play, his jump shot and his defensive movement," Casey said of Carroll. "Getting him rest right now is the most important thing."

The Knicks (3-4) ended a three-game slide with a 99-95 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, winning despite shooting 39.3 percent. Carmelo Anthony had 24 points but went 8 of 20 as his shooting woes continued. His 37.1 field-goal percentage would be by far the lowest of his career.

Neither of the club's top two scorers have been particularly efficient, as rookie Kristaps Porzingis (12.3 ppg) is hitting 39.5 percent and was 3 for 10 against the Lakers.

"Offensively our execution is still really an area where we have to improve a lot, which we will over time," said coach Derek Fisher, who was ejected in the third quarter for arguing Porzingis' foul on a Kobe Bryant 3-point attempt.

New York, though, has limited its last three opponents to 40.3 percent shooting after yielding 47.2 in the previous three contests.

The Knicks have dropped five of seven in Toronto, where the Raptors are looking to improve to 3-0.

Lowry has averaged 24.4 points and 52.6 percent from the floor in his last five meetings with New York, though DeRozan has made just 36.6 percent in his past five.

Anthony has averaged 31.5 points in his last six games against Toronto.

Preview: Mavericks (3-3) at Pelicans (0-6)

Date: November 10, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

A playoff team last season, the New Orleans Pelicans are still struggling to earn their first victory of this one.

Mired in their worst start in 11 years, the Pelicans try to avoid being swept in a home-and-home with the visiting Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night.

Plagued by injuries and among the worst defensive teams in the NBA, New Orleans is 0-6 for the first time since dropping a club-record eight straight to open 2004-05.

"We have to come out and compete to a level where the game's over and we're drained," All-Star Anthony Davis said. "We're not doing that right now. We've got to find a way to compete for the whole 48 (minutes)."

Averaging 25.2 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks, Davis remains the most consistent bright spot for the Pelicans. However, he's seen more double-teams, resulting in a field-goal percentage of 46.3 that's the lowest through the first six games of his four-year career. Eric Gordon (17.8 points per game), Ryan Anderson (15.7) and Jrue Holiday (13.0) have the ability to score but none are shooting better than 42 percent.

After sitting out Saturday's 107-98 loss at Dallas (3-3), Holiday could return, then would likely sit Wednesday at Atlanta as he continues to deal with a leg problem. While it's uncertain when guards Tyreke Evans and Norris Cole will make their season debuts, center Omer Asik has been limited to one game and Kendrick Perkins will miss a fourth consecutive contest.

"Some of the guys that can help (Davis) are not healthy yet," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry told the team's official website.

"We've got a lot of work to do. There's no easy way to put it. We've got to get things corrected."

That's especially true at the defense end, as New Orleans is allowing a league-high 114.7 points per game and opponents are shooting 48.9 percent.

Dallas enjoyed its best shooting night of the young season by making 47.6 percent overall and scoring 35 fourth-quarter points Saturday. Deron Williams had 16 of his 19 points in the second half and Dirk Nowitzki scored nine of his 18 in the final period to help the Mavericks record their first home victory in three tries.

Averaging 15.7 points in the last three games, Williams continues to feel better after missing the second game of the season with a sprained knee. Wesley Matthews enjoyed his most productive effort so far Saturday with 13 points in 29 minutes while continuing to work his way back from a torn Achilles suffered in March.

'We're still trying to figure things out and get healthy,' Williams said. 'We had a lot of guys who missed a lot of training camp coming off injuries and were on minutes restrictions. We've got to balance all those things and get acclimated. Those things are going to take some time.'

Nowitzki has shot 51.3 percent while playing every game this season. He's averaged 22.7 points and shot 48.4 percent in his last nine at New Orleans, and scored 24 when Dallas suffered its only defeat in the last 12 meetings with the Pelicans, 109-106 on the road Jan. 25.

Davis has averaged 26.7 points and 12.7 boards in the last three at home against the Mavericks.

Preview: Hornets (2-4) at Timberwolves (4-2)

Date: November 10, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Timberwolves only had five wins after playing 36 games last season. Earning their first home victory will get them there just seven contests into this one.

Andrew Wiggins seeks another big offensive performance to help the Timberwolves avoid their longest home skid in almost seven years Tuesday night against the Charlotte Hornets.

Minnesota finished with the NBA's worst record (16-66) in 2014-15 and missed the playoffs for the 11th straight year, but a young core built around Wiggins has helped the club get off to a 4-2 start this season.

The Timberwolves can match their longest win streak from last season - a three-game run Feb. 4-8 - but that will require ending a lengthy slump at home. After dropping their final eight at Target Center in '14-15, they're trying to avoid losing 11 straight in Minneapolis for the first time since Jan. 28-March 9, 2009.

That skid marked their longest at home in a single season. Minnesota's worst overall losing streak was a 14-game victory drought that bridged two seasons from 1994-95.

The Wolves return home - where they're 0-2 - after blowing a 34-point lead Monday before surging late in a 117-107 victory that ended Atlanta's seven-game win streak.

Wiggins matched his career high with 33 points while hitting 15 of 22 from the floor two days after scoring 31 in a 102-93 overtime victory at Chicago. It marks the first time in his two-year career that he's had consecutive 30-point games.

"I was feeling it," he said. "My shot was falling. My teammates kept encouraging me, giving me the ball."

The Hawks never led until going up 107-106 with 3:26 remaining, but Wiggins scored the next seven points to help Minnesota avoid what would have been the franchise's biggest blown lead in a loss. The Wolves led by 29 before falling to Dallas on Dec. 30, 2008.

"Any team down is going to come back fighting," Wiggins said. "We knew that."

Wiggins will try to stay hot on his home court after totaling 28 points and shooting 10 for 35 in his first two games there.

Karl-Anthony Towns has also struggled at home with 17 points on 8-of-22 shooting and nine rebounds. The rookie center has matched that scoring production in each of the last two games while also totaling 25 boards.

Minnesota has dropped three straight and five of six to Charlotte (2-4), which is kicking off a busy stretch with the finale of this three-game trip.

The Hornets are also trying to bounce back from their worst defensive showing of the season in a 114-94 loss at San Antonio on Saturday. They gave up season highs in points and shooting percentage (55.6).

"We got seven games in 11 days, very little time to practice," coach Steve Clifford said. "We've really worked on a lot of individual and just basic team defense things that have slipped because we haven't had a lot of practice time.

"If we're going to get our defense going, it's going to start with some basic stuff."

Kemba Walker has finally started to get going offensively, scoring a season-high 27 points against the Spurs after averaging 15.2 over the first five games. He's scored 18.5 per game while Charlotte has split its last four visits to Minnesota.

Al Jefferson is averaging 17.0 points and 9.3 rebounds in his last four games there.

Preview: Celtics (2-3) at Bucks (4-3)

Date: November 10, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

It took the Milwaukee Bucks a little more than three months to win five straight games in 2014-15.

Thanks to some improved defensive play, the Bucks can match that run - a 2014-15 season high - much earlier Tuesday night against the visiting Boston Celtics.

After allowing an average of 115.3 points in the first three games, Boston (4-3) has yielded 90.3 in the last four. The Bucks' last three opponents have shot 41.4 percent, including 21.3 from 3-point range, after the first four connected on 46.7 percent and 43.2 from beyond the arc.

Though two victories came over Brooklyn and another against Philadelphia, offensively challenged teams that entered the week without a win, that progress provides optimism. That's especially true given that Jabari Parker is contributing gradually after missing the first four games while recovering from knee surgery, point guard Michael Carter-Williams might sit out a fourth consecutive contest with a sore ankle and veteran O.J. Mayo yet to play because of a strained hamstring.

Milwaukee didn't win five in a row last season until Jan. 27-Feb. 4.

"There's a lot of new pieces, including myself,' center Greg Monroe said. 'We just had to work out some things.

"I definitely think everybody's on the same page now. Everybody understands what they have to do on both sides of the floor. I think that's why the tide has kind of changed.'

After averaging 14.3 points in his first five seasons with Detroit, Monroe is scoring 18.1 and pulling down a team-leading 8.7 boards per game. He scored 20 while Jerryd Bayless added 19 and 10 assists in Saturday's 94-86 win over the Nets.

"It's big," the ex-Celtic Bayless said. "Everybody is contributing. Everybody is coming in, playing hard ... That's the most encouraging thing about it. We'll see what can happen."

Monroe's averaged 20.5 points in four home games, and 22.8 in his last four overall against the Celtics (2-3).

Boston, which dropped its only road game by two against Indiana on Wednesday, snapped a three-game skid with Friday's 118-98 victory over Washington.

Jared Sullinger scored 21 and Kelly Olynyk had 19 with seven rebounds, four assists and four steals as the Celtics shot 61 percent in the first half and led by as many as 30. Boston also scored 24 points off the same number of Wizards turnovers.

The Celtics lead the NBA in forcing turnovers at 20.8 per contest.

'We were running up and down the floor," guard Isaiah Thomas said. "We got some stops and we got out and ran. I think that's when we're at our best."

Forward Jae Crowder, who had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five steals against the Nets, should be able to play after he bruised his knee in that contest. The Celtics also hope guard Marcus Smart can go after he sat out the last two games with a toe injury.

"We prefer to have our whole team available," coach Brad Stevens said. "At the same time, we've got good depth in those spots and guys that are very reliable."

Sullinger has averaged 15.5 points as Boston has split its last four at Milwaukee.

Skiles has Orlando bettors making magic at the sportsbook
By BIG AL MCMORDIE

“Big” Al McMordie listens closely to the heartbeat of the NBA hardwood, breaking down this week’s hoops schedule and its best betting opportunities.

Spread watch

The Orlando Magic have busted out of the gates with a 7-0 ATS record, though they've won just three of those seven games on the scoreboard. Still, Scott Skiles' men are rewarding their fans in Las Vegas and that's not much of a surprise, given his history as a head coach who gets the most out of his players at the start of a tenure.

In his last coaching gig with the Milwaukee Bucks (2008-2013), Skiles' men were 23-10-1 ATS his first 34 games. His stint with the Chicago Bulls (2003-2007) didn't start off as hot, but the Bulls still covered 16 of his first 30 games. And his first year with the Phoenix Suns (1999-2000) was spectacular, as Phoenix opened with a 46-25-2 ATS mark.

On Monday, the Magic will travel to Bankers Life Fieldhouse to play the Pacers, who are on a 4-0 ATS run. Indiana's also 4-0 SU and ATS vs. the Magic the last four meetings, so something will have to give Monday night.

Total watch

The Utah Jazz have opened the season by playing five of six games Under the total. Last year, Utah ranked 14th in Defensive Net Rating (105.91) but currently ranks first in that category (93.40). The key for the Jazz is the play of center Rudy Gobert. He’s the league's best rim protector and limiting opponents to just 30.9 percent of their shot attempts when he’s within both five feet of the basket and five feet of the shooter.

This week, the Jazz will face two other teams playing great defense: the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat. On Tuesday, the Jazz will travel to Cleveland to play the fifth-ranked team in defensive efficiency (after ranking 18th last season) which is 3-4 Over/Under.

Then, on Thursday, Utah will play at Miami. The Heat are currently riding a 0-6 O/U run and rank 10th in defensive efficiency (after ranking 21st last season). The Under will surely be worth a look in each of those two games.

Injury watch

The New Orleans Pelicans have been thinned by injuries to start the season and suffered another tough break last week. Veteran center Kendrick Perkins suffered a right pectoral injury in New Orleans' 134-120 loss to Golden State and will miss up to three months.

Perkins' injury is the latest setback for New Orleans, which is already missing Norris Cole (ankle), Tyreke Evans (knee) and Quincy Pondexter (knee). And Jrue Holiday' minutes have been limited, as he recovers from a stress fracture in his right leg. Not surprisingly, these injuries have been the primary reason the Pelicans are off to a 0-6 SU and ATS start. And their unadjusted Net Rating of -11.91 ranks 28th, ahead of only 0-6 Philadelphia (-12.54) and 0-7 Brooklyn (-13.21).

The Pelicans will kick off this week with a revenge game Tuesday versus Dallas, which beat New Orleans 107-98, as a 5-point favorite Saturday. With Dallas on an 8-16-1 ATS run when going into revenge spots, and New Orleans 41-24-1 ATS at home when playing with revenge, the Pelicans might be worth a look Tuesday.

Playbook

Last year, in coach Derek Fisher's first season, the New York Knicks ranked 28th (out of 30) in pace of play. Even worse, in each of the last three seasons (so not totally coach Fisher's fault), the Knicks have ranked dead last in fastbreak points per game. And when you combine a horrid half-court offense with hardly any transition baskets, you get a team that ranks next-to-last in offensive efficiency.

It was a priority for Fisher to have his team get out on the fast break, and shoot early in the shot clock this season, before the defense could get set. No longer is running the Triangle Offense the team's highest priority. For New York's first three games (2-1 ATS, 3-0 O/U), they had 19, 17 and 10 fastbreak points. But in their last four games (1-3 ATS, 0-4 O/U), the Knicks have recorded 0, 0, 14 and 8 fastbreak points. Their pace of play now ranks 20th in the NBA.

Keep an eye on these categories, because if New York continues to fail to push the pace and/or convert transition buckets, their games are likely to go Under. On Tuesday, New York will visit Toronto, which is on a 0-5 O/U run itself. But the Over is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings between these two teams at Air Canada Centre.

'On the hardwood'

Toronto Raptors suffering its second defeat of the season Sunday dropping a 96-76 decision at Miami return to the comfort of Air Canada Center where they'll host the New York Knicks who are off a 99-95 home win versus the Lakers.

The Raptors are 8-point home favorites. Backing Raptors in the situation they find themselves today has been costly. The Raptors have stumbled against the betting line as favorites after being taken behind the woodshed spanked by 15 or more points. In the last six situations Raptors are a money-burning 1-5 against the betting line. Additionally, the Raptors have failed to cash in eight straight after netting 90 or less points the previous effort. If that were not enough, Raptors have cashed just 3-of-5 in the series and hit the hardwood 4-8 ATS as home faves vs a division foes

NBA Odds: Tuesday, November 10 2015 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews

So it should be an interesting night in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday because the fans there are most likely to be cheering Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant harder than any Wizards player. Of course Durant is from that area and the Wizards are definitely targeting him in free agency this summer. Most believe that if Durant doesn't re-sign with the Thunder that he will return home like LeBron James did to Cleveland. One reason the Wizards didn't re-sign excellent young guard Bradley Beal to an extension yet was so they had the room to offer Durant a max deal this summer and then they can go over the cap to extend Beal. In last year's visit to D.C., there were "KD2DC" signs everywhere and Durant was featured on the Wizards' jumbotron wearing his Oklahoma City jersey with 'Washington' photoshopped on the front and the headline, "Come Home KD." Durant thought that was in poor taste.

Thunder at Wizards (TBA)

This will have live betting at sportsbooks as it's televised on NBA TV. Oklahoma City ended a three-game losing streak Sunday in a 124-103 victory over visiting Phoenix. Durant had 32 points and 11 rebounds, and Russell Westbrook 21 points, 13 assists and six boards. OKC shot 52 percent overall and 61 percent in the second half. Oklahoma City has scored at least 112 points in all four of its wins this season. Washington lost a second straight Saturday, 114-99 in Atlanta. In the second of a back-to-back, the Wiz had a season-high 26 turnovers which led to 33 Hawks points. The Thunder swept the Wizards last season. Beal, by the way, is being called questionable for this game with a bruised shoulder. That's why the TBA.

Key trends: The Thunder are 1-5 ATS in their past six road games. Washington is 0-5 ATS in its past five vs. teams with a winning record. The "over/under" is 7-1 in OKC's past eight following a win of more than 10 points.

Early lean: Wait on Beal, although he likely plays. Take Thunder regardless.

Jazz at Cavaliers (TBA)

Utah enters on a two-game winning streak, beating visiting Memphis 89-79 on Saturday. Derrick Favors had 12 points, 16 rebounds and three steals. At 4-2, the Jazz are off to their best start since 2008-09. Cleveland lost on opening night in Chicago but hasn't since. The Cavs are off a 101-97 home win over Indiana on Sunday. LeBron James was questionable for that one with a sore leg but played and had 29 points. J.R. Smith (right knee, quad) missed his third straight game. He took shots on the court in warm-ups and could return for this one. Cleveland has won 24 of its past 25 at home and is outscoring opponents by 12 per game there over that stretch. The Cavs have won three straight at home vs. Utah.

Key trends: Utah is 6-1 ATS in its past seven vs. teams with a winning record. The Cavs are 1-5 ATS in their past six at home. The under is 5-1 in Utah's past six.

Early lean: This is TBA because James' sore left thigh was hit against Utah. I'm sure he plays. But obviously need to wait on that.

Lakers at Heat (-10, 199.5)

The Kobe Bryant farewell tour continues with potentially his final game in south Florida. He struggled again Sunday in a 99-95 loss at the Knicks in probably his final game at Madison Square Garden (where he scored his first NBA point). Kobe was 6-for-19 from the field and 2-for-10 from long range in finishing with 18 points. He's perhaps the worst 3-point shooter in the NBA right now yet keeps taking them. Bryant is 4-11 in his career in Miami. The Heat are looking for their first back-to-back wins of the season as they won 96-76 at home against Toronto on Sunday. Hassan Whiteside had 20 points and 11 boards. All four Heat wins this season are by double digits. They have swept the Lakers three years in a row.

Key trends: The Lakers are 1-7 ATS in their past eight vs. teams with a winning record. Miami is 0-7 ATS in its past seven on Tuesday. The under is 6-0 in Miami's past six.

Early lean: Heat and under.

Knicks at Raptors (-8, 197.5)

New York is off that four-point win over the Lakers on Sunday that ended a three-game skid. Carmelo Anthony had 24 points. The Knicks were hoping to see guard Arron Afflalo make his season debut on Tuesday but that's now looking unlikely due to his left hamstring strain. Toronto is off a four-game road trip where it lost the final two games in Florida. Kyle Lowry is in a mini-slump over his past three games, shooting under 38 percent in each. The Raptors were 3-1 against the Knicks last season.

Key trends: The home team is 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings. The over is 6-0 in the past six in Toronto.

Early lean: Raptors and over.

Celtics at Bucks (pick'em, 201.5)

Boston ended a three-game slide with Friday's 118-98 win over Washington. The Celtics shot 61 percent in the first half while leading by 23 at intermission. Boston was hoping to get back guard Marcus Smart for this game from a left toe sprain, but he didn't practice on Monday and is being called doubtful. Isaiah Thomas would continue to start as long as Smart is out. Milwaukee beat the Nets 94-86 on Saturday for its fourth straight win. Michael Carter-Williams missed his third straight game with a strained left ankle and has been ruled out Tuesday. The Bucks were 2-1 vs. Boston last year.

Key trends: The under is 7-1 ATS in the past eight meetings in Milwaukee. Boston is 4-1 ATS in the past five in the series.

Early lean: Bucks and under.

Hornets at Timberwolves (+1.5, 198)

Charlotte is off a 114-94 loss in San Antonio on Saturday. Hornets star center Al Jefferson played in Minnesota for three seasons, appearing in 208 games averaging 20.1 points and 10.4 rebounds. He was acquired by the Wolves in the Kevin Garnett trade with Boston. It's the second of a back-to-back for Minnesota as it was in Atlanta on Monday. The Wolves remain without center Nikola Pekovic. Leading scorer Kevin Martin was set to return Monday after missing a game due to a family matter. Charlotte beat Minnesota twice easily last year and has won three in a row overall in the series.

Key trends: The Hornets are 12-4 ATS in their past 16 Tuesday games. Minnesota is 1-9 ATS in its past 10 at home. The over is 8-2 in Charlotte's past 10 on Tuesday.

Early lean: Hornets and under.

Mavericks at Pelicans (-1, 209.5)

Dallas beat the Pelicans in Big D 107-98 on Saturday to keep New Orleans winless. Deron Williams had 16 of his 19 points in the second half and Dirk Nowitzki scored nine of his 18 in the fourth quarter. Anthony Davis had 25 points for New Orleans, and Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson added 21 apiece. The Pelicans were without two starters in center Omer Asik and point guard Jrue Holiday; Holiday will play here but Asik is questionable. New Orleans is 0-6 for the first time since dropping a club-record eight straight to open 2004-05. The Mavs' Wes Matthews has now been cleared to play around 30 minutes per game off his Achilles tear that ended last season early with Portland.

Key trends: Dallas is 5-1 ATS in the past six meetings in New Orleans. The over is 5-2 in the past seven meetings there.

Early lean: Pelicans and over.

Tuesday's games

Toledo was 7-0 before getting upset at home by Northern Illinois in last Tuesday's game; Rockets' MAC road wins are 24-10/51-35- they're 4-5 as road favorites under Campbell, 2-0 this year. Toledo won last five vs Central Michigan (4-1 vs spread), with only non-cover by half a point in LY's game. Rockets won 38-17/44-17 in last two visits here. Chippewas won last three games, allowing 13.7 ppg. Five of seven Toledo games stayed under the total.

Underdogs covered five of last six Kent-Ohio games; Flashes won three of last four visits to Athens. Kent is 1-3 on the road, scoring total of 17 points in three losses; they're 7-8 as road underdogs under Haynes, 2-2 this year. Ohio lost last three games by 35-24-28 points. allowing 50.7 ppg; they're 2-2 as favorites this year, 9-8 as home favorites since 2011. Last five Kent games stayed under total; five of last seven Bobcat games went over.

# 2 TKR'S METRO SPECS 5/2

# 4 PAULIMONY 8/1

# 1 TRIP HANOVER 5/1

TKR'S METRO SPECS has a very nice shot to take this competition. Been battling with some tougher customers of late, has a distinct class advantage. (Average Rating 84). Should be given a look based on the good speed rating earned in the last contest. PAULIMONY - Has the makings of a profitable play, averaging a rather good 86 speed fig. Positively the class of the field of horses with an average rating of 84. A nice play. TRIP HANOVER - Post 1 has been winning at an above average pct, suggesting great probability of success in this contest. Pace ratings say this race should shape up nicely for this gelding. Looking for a big effort.

# 8 SOMEWHERE WITH YOU 8/1

# 5 ANOTHERBUGGA 6/1

# 2 REBEL SOLDIER 3/1

SOMEWHERE WITH YOU is the best bet in this competition and the big morning line could mean a big score. That 81 TrackMaster Speed Rating clocked in the last gathering puts this standardbred in the mix in this one. Rosecroft Raceway has been playing to this nice horse's running style, we're looking for a very promising effort. Have to think about a nice horse coming out of the Rosecroft Raceway 8 hole. The ROI is great. ANOTHERBUGGA - That 84 speed rating clocked in the last contest puts this race horse in the mix in here. The 5 position sports a much better than average win percentage at Rosecroft Raceway. REBEL SOLDIER - Deserves a shot given the positive win pct he sports. This interesting entrant may have some hidden form, a top prize would be a pleasant surprise.

# 3 MCCANN'S LUCKY ONE 9/2

# 2 GREAT PLEASURE 5/2

# 10 DAKOTA FIREFLY 4/1

MCCANN'S LUCKY ONE looks quite good to best this field. Trainers don't bring ponies back this soon without any reason. Will likely be one of the early speedsters of the pack going into the midpoint of the competition. GREAT PLEASURE - With Whitaker controlling the reins on her, this filly will almost certainly be able to break out early for this race. DAKOTA FIREFLY - Likely to see this horse to be right there at the finishing post versus these mounts. Has some encouraging angles which make this horse a play.

# 8 JUDGE RANDI 6/5

# 4 LA LUTE 4/1

# 7 MISS MURDER 8/1

I have to consider JUDGE RANDI here. Has run solidly when racing a dirt route race. Had one of the strongest speed figs of this group in her last race. The average Equibase class figure alone makes this one a contender. LA LUTE - Reliable average speed figures in dirt route races make this horse a solid choice. The average Equibase class rating of 62 makes this entrant hard to beat. MISS MURDER - She looks very good in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point.

#8 WEDDED PRINCE (ML=8/1)
#10 CHES' STEIN (ML=8/1)

WEDDED PRINCE - This gelding is in good form. Ran third on October 16th. Gelding won at this class and distance on June 17th at Louisiana Downs. The recent speed rating of 78 is the highest last race speed fig in the group. CHES' STEIN - Don't often see a positive ROI like +112. This jock/handler pair has done well together over the last 12 months.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 HOLY FRAZIER (ML=5/2), #1A PRIVATIZE (ML=3/1), #1 SINGLE ORIGIN (ML=3/1),

HOLY FRAZIER - Didn't show much run last out. Probably won't make an impact in today's event. Finished seventh in his most recent performance with a quite unimpressive rating. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this field. PRIVATIZE - If you keep choosing these sort of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be let down frequently. SINGLE ORIGIN - Speed figures of 73/63/56 are headed downward. I don't think this entrant likes running on the inside, certainly not out of the number one post.

Have to go with #8 WEDDED PRINCE on the win end if we get at least 5/2 odds
