KEY STAT: Ludogorets had ten shots at the Emirates and hit the post

EXPERT VERDICT: If it’s possible to impress in a 6-0 defeat, then Ludogorets managed that feat in the first meeting. While clearly outclassed at Arsenal, the Bulgarians refused to retreat into their shells and their competent attacking unit were unlucky not to score a consolation goal. Expect another spirited defeat in Sofia.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Man City are unbeaten at the Etihad since Pep Guardiola took charge

EXPERT VERDICT: Barcelona beat Manchester City 4-0 but that scoreline does not tell the whole story and Pep Guardiola can help turn the tables. Barcelona are firmly in charge of Group C after three wins from as many games but they were unconvincing against Granada on Saturday and look worth taking on in a match that they don’t have to win.

RECOMMENDATION: Man City

KEY STAT: Copenhagen are unbeaten at home this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Claudio Ranieri is clearly prioritising the Champions League this season but his Leicester side could come unstuck in Copenhagen. The Danes were unlucky to meet with defeat at the King Power Stadium and can reverse the result in front of their own supporters as they chase a spot in the knockout stages.

RECOMMENDATION: Denmark

KEY STAT: Tottenham have scored only five goals in their last six league and European games

EXPERT VERDICT: Tottenham were left clinging on for a point in the first meeting of these sides, but their weak finish to that match shouldn’t distract from the fact that Tottenham dominated early on and should have earned a half-time lead. With the defences of both Spurs and Bayer impressing this could be very close again.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Fenerbahce have scored in each of their last nine games

EXPERT VERDICT: A 4-1 victory against Fenerbahce saw United at their best but the Turks are a different proposition at home and have had back-to-back wins since that calamity at Old Trafford. Misfiring United have lost their one away Europa League tie so far while Fener have won their one previous home tie.

KEY STAT: Southampton had more corners, shots and possession in Milan

EXPERT VERDICT: Southampton dominated the reverse fixture but were both wasteful and hugely unlucky to lose 1-0 given Antonio Candreva’s stunning strike was Inter’s only shot on target. Both sides really need the points in a tightly contested group, but Saints surely will not be as profligate in front of their own fans.

RECOMMENDATION: Southampton

Preview: Blues (5-2) at Rangers (6-3)

Date: November 01, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Two of the NHL's top teams will meet for a second time this season when the New York Rangers host the St. Louis Blues at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

The Blues (5-2-2) emerged with a 3-2 win in St. Louis on Oct. 18. The Rangers (6-3-0) entered the third period down a goal with the Blues missing three players due to injury. Despite being undermanned, St. Louis survived being outshot 15-0 over the final 20 minutes thanks to goaltender Carter Hutton's splendid play.

The offense has dried up for the Blues with three goals over their past three games, but one was enough in a shutout victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. Goaltender Jake Allen made 27 saves and doesn't think the lack of scoring is any more than a little slump over a long season.

"It's just one of those little stretches where pucks are either hitting a stick, hitting a post, when most of the time they're going in," Allen said. "That's going to turn for us soon. We've just got to work through it. The goals will come."

"It would be nice to see a few more go in and guys to start gripping it a little bit less, myself included," said left winger Jaden Schwarz, who has just one goal in five games. "Our goalies have been awesome. We haven't been scoring much but have still been able to get points."

Scoring has not been a problem for the Rangers, who are averaging a league-best 3.89 goals per game. Their six goals against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday are two fewer than the Blues have scored in their past five games. The balance has been there too, with seven players scoring at least three goals.

The Blues have just four players with at least three goals.

Right wing Michael Grabner, a third-liner for New York, scored three goals himself against the Lightning.

It's an example of how just about anyone in the Rangers lineup can be deadly for opponents this season.

"A lot of our chances started from good defense, from good smart decisions coming through the neutral zone, and us catching them when we get a chance," said Rangers left wing J.T. Miller, who leads the team with nine points in nine games.

"We talked about (Tampa's defense) being up in the rush all the time and giving us a transition game so we can transition on them."

The Rangers speed has been giving teams problems all season and the Blues aren't one of the quicker clubs in the league. It didn't matter in the first encounter between the teams because of Hutton, so it will be on whoever is in net for coach Ken Hitchcock's team to make the difference.

"I don't think that way," Allen said about feeling the pressure to make every save when his team isn't scoring. "That's when they score on you. You just keep playing your game and try not to let anything faze you. If you need one goal, if you need a shutout, so be it, but you don't want to get too far ahead of yourself. It's just sort of one minute at a time."

Rangers left wing Chris Kreider had three goals in five games before neck spasms caused him to miss the past four contests. Even without one of their hottest scorers to start the season, the Rangers still averaged four goals per game.

"You want to play obviously but it's very encouraging to see how the team is doing," Kreider said to the media after practice on Monday. "We're clicking on a lot of different levels, playing the way they want to play. So at the end of the day, that's what matters."

Preview: Stars (3-4) at Blue Jackets (3-3)

Date: November 01, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets play host the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night at Nationwide Arena in the final game between the teams this season.

They last played each other Oct. 22 and the Blue Jackets (3-3-1) emerged with a 3-0 victory over the Stars (3-4-1).

"That was as flat as flat could be. There's no disguising it," Stars head coach Lindy Ruff told The Dallas News. "There was no emotion inside that game."

Coming into Columbus on a two-game losing streak, the Stars are a team in search of offense. The high-scoring and confident group from last season is missing in action as injuries mount and the power play sputters.

Dallas led the NHL with 265 goals last season but has scored just one goal in their last two games despite having 65 shots on goal.

Saturday's 4-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild was the Stars' third loss in four games.

"It's a microcosm of the season," forward Jason Spezza said to The Dallas News. "It's been a little bit of injuries. We've had a little bit of playing from behind. I think it's just been a bit of a slow start from us.

"I think offense is something that we do well. So we're not going to hit the panic button."

Forward Patrick Sharp has missed the last four games because of a concussion, and forwards Cody Eakin and Mattias Janmark both have knee injuries.

Stars general manager Jim Nill released the following statement in regard to injured forward Ales Hemsky:

"Ales underwent surgery this morning to repair a labral tear in his hip. The injury was sustained while he was participating in the World Cup of Hockey. He will be out of the lineup for five to six months as he recovers and rehabilitates."

The Blue Jackets enter Tuesday's game with a 2-1-1 record on the just-completed West Coast road trip and are gaining confidence with each game. Coach John Tortorella marks his 82-game anniversary behind the Columbus bench on Tuesday.

Team captain Nick Foligno is leading by example, pacing the team in assists (seven) and points (eight).

Offensively, the team is much better this season when compared to last season after seven games. At this point a year ago, the Blue Jackets were 0-7-0 and outscored 34-13 (minus-21 goal differential).

This season has seen them play more cohesively as a team, hovering at .500 while outscoring their opponents 18-17 (plus-1 goal differential). Their power play is second best in the NHL, converting at 33.3 percent, and their penalty killing is sixth in the league at 87 percent

The Blue Jackets have allowed just 17 goals-against, the fourth-fewest goals allowed in the NHL this season.

Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky has played in every game this season, posting a 3-3-1 record. He has a 2.02 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage.

Bobrovsky appears to be regaining the form and composure last seen during his 2012-13 Vezina Trophy-winning season. His play in goal has inspired confidence in his teammates.

Defensively, the Blue Jackets are happy with rookie defenseman Zach Werenski. Through seven games, the 19-year-old has two goals and four assists. He makes smart plays with and without the puck, often choosing to skate the puck out of the defensive zone rather than risk turning it over.

Defenseman Ryan Murray, having missed the last four games with an upper-body injury, could return to the lineup Tuesday against the Stars.

"It's been a couple of unlucky things (to start the season), but I'm looking forward to getting back into it," Murray told The Columbus Dispatch.

Blue Jackets defenseman Dillon Heatherington is on injured reserve (wrist) and forward David Clarkson is on long-term injured reserve (back).

CL Best Bets - Tuesday
By Toby Maxtone-Smith

UEFA Champions League - Matchday 4

Three rounds into the 2016/17 Champions League group stage three teams have managed to win all their games so far. They are Barcelona, Atletico Madrid - who have won every game 1-0 - and Leicester City.

Groups A to D move into their second halves on Tuesday and in Group A Arsenal and PSG are locked on 7 points. It looks almost certain to be a straight fight between them for top spot. Group B is closer, with Napoli first on six points, followed by Besiktas on five and Benfica on four. Dynamo Kiev are some way back on just one point.

In Group C Barcelona look to be running away with it, with Manchester City one point ahead of Borussia Mönchengladbach in second. And Atletico lead Group C with Bayern Munich just behind, though should Bayern defeat Atletico in the return game they would likely win the group.

The Banker: PSG to win at Basel at 3/5

The current trend of European football and the set-up of the Champions League are at their worst when it comes to teams like Basel. They have won eight league titles in the last nine years in Switzerland, but as with every other champion from Europe’s minor leagues, Basel always struggle to make the step up in quality required in the Champions League. They were comfortably dispatched 3-0 by PSG two weeks ago, and there seems little reason why the same won’t happen again.

This is particularly true because the stakes are high for PSG. An unlucky 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal on Matchday 1 means they realistically have to win all their last three games to win the group.

Their form, particularly at the back, is very good and at 3/5 they are a good bet to win in Switzerland.

The Solid Bet: Barcelona to win at Manchester City at 6/4

Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Manchester City at the Nou Camp was a little flattering, but it gave Luis Enrique’s men a pretty much unbridgeable five point cushion at the top of the group. And assuming they manage to beat both Celtic away and Borussia Mönchengladbach at home, there seems no way for City to win the group.

This means that, off the back of a tough set of domestic league and cup fixtures, City’s intensity may not quite be what it was in the opening minutes in Catalonia, when they played well.

When Barça took the lead they then motored into superiority, and they more than justify favouritism tonight. City recovered from a sticky patch of form to win 4-0 at West Brom at the weekend, but Barcelona seem to have them sussed.

They are a solid bet at 6/4.

The Outsider: Besiktas to beat Napoli at 11/4

Besiktas caused one of the biggest shocks - not that that’s saying much - of the Champions League so far by winning 3-2 away to Napoli. A brace by Cameroonian striker Vincent Aboubakar sealed a famous win for the Turkish side and put them right in contention to qualify from Group B.

But with Benfica facing a winnable looking match at home to bottom side Dynamo Kiev, the onus is still on Besiktas to go and attack Napoli and look for back-to-back wins.

Napoli are going steadily in Serie A at two points per game, but they have only won one of their five away games this season, drawing two and losing two. Turkey is famed for being one of the most intimidating countries for teams to visit.

Besiktas could cause another shock here at 11/4.

The First Goalscorer: Olivier Giroud for Arsenal at Ludogorets Razgrad at 7/2

Either side of a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Middlesbrough, Arsenal have thrashed both Sunderland (4-1) and Tuesday’s opponents Ludogorets Razgrad (6-0). It is unlikely they will let up in Bulgaria as they are in a tight race with PSG to win Group A.

One man who looks set to start for Arsène Wenger’s side is Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman came off the bench to score twice away to Sunderland, and Wenger may use this easy-looking game - his side are 1/3 to win with Ludogorets 17/2 - to rotate his team a bit.

Giroud has his flaws but is easily good enough to unlock the home side’s defence.

Preview: Bruins (4-4) at Panthers (4-4)

Date: November 01, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

SUNRISE, Fla. -- The Florida Panthers are thrilled to be back home.

After getting just two points during their just-completed four-game road trip, the Panthers (4-4-1) will play host to the Boston Bruins (4-4-0) on Tuesday night at the BB&T Center.

The Panthers salvaged their road trip by beating the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 on Sunday thanks in part to a hat trick by Florida newcomer Colton Sceviour.

"That was a real big win for us," Panthers coach Gerard Gallant told the assembled media. "We needed that one."

The Bruins, who are the Panthers' rivals in the Atlantic Division, have been off since beating the Red Wings 1-0 on Saturday.

Boston goalie Tuukka Rask, who had missed three straight games -- all losses and by a combined score of 14-4 -- because of an undisclosed injury that is believed to be a hamstring issue, came back and posted the shutout, stopping 24 shots.

For the season, Rask has a brilliant 1.25 goals-against average and a .958 saves percentage. And Rask, who has all four of Boston's wins this season, was even better against the Red Wings.

"For myself, it was just a 40-minute game," said Rask, explaining that Detroit didn't get any true chances off against him in the first period on Saturday. "It was a great effort by our guys -- heck of a game."

Rask will now face a speedy Panthers team that includes Sceviour, whose hat trick was the first one for Florida in three years. Sceviour was also the first Panthers player since Nathan Horton in 2009 to get a power-play goal, short-handed goal and even-strength goal, all in one game.

"That was exciting," Sceviour said of his first career hat trick. "It was a tough road trip, but I'm glad we ended it in the proper way."

Tuesday's game will be the first of four meetings this season between the Bruins and Panthers. The Bruins won three of four against Florida last season, including both games at the BB&T Center.

Then again, the Panthers are the defending Atlantic Division champions and the Bruins have missed the playoffs the past two years.

Part of the problem for the Bruins has been a lack of a solid backup goalie behind Rask, and that was evident against during this recent three-game slide.

Rask won the Vezina Trophy in 2013-2014, but he has been overworked since as the Bruins haven't found a backup they can trust.

And even though Rask is still not 100 percent healthy, according to reports, he is confident he can make the start on Tuesday.

"For sure, yeah," he told the media after Saturday's game. "No problems there."

Rask made it through practice on Monday, which is encouraging for Bruins coach Claude Julien.

"He's had some soreness," Julien said. "But he seems to be OK right now. We hope he's healthy. We need him."

Indeed they do, but the Bruins also need more scoring. Their offense has been nonexistent in most games. Their power play, for example, is dead last in the league at 6.7 percent.

The Panthers, who are likely to start Roberto Luongo in goal, are hoping that lack of offense continues for Boston in a matchup that could turn on whether Rask plays ... or not.

Preview: Lightning (5-4) at Islanders (4-5)

Date: November 01, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- The last time the New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning saw one another, they were battling for the right to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

On Tuesday, the teams will be looking to regain the form that sent them deep into the Stanley Cup playoffs six months ago.

The Islanders will continue a five-game homestand by hosting the Lightning at Barclays Center. It will be a rematch of an Eastern Conference semifinal from last spring, when Tampa Bay outlasted New York in five games.

The Islanders (4-5-0) snapped a two-game losing streak on Sunday with a 5-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Lightning (5-4-0) lost their third straight contest on Sunday with a 6-1 setback to the New York Rangers.

The losing streak - during which the Lightning have been outscored 12-3 - has dropped them into a tie for third place in the Atlantic Division. Tampa Bay resides seven points behind the red-hot Montreal Canadiens, who remain unbeaten in regulation.

The Lightning allowed just 17 goals in their first six games.

"I think every team goes through a stretch of games where you're off your game," Lightning defenseman Anton Stralman said Sunday night. "That's obviously where we are right now. It doesn't matter if it's now or midseason (or) later in the season. It's about stopping the bleeding, fix the wrongs and do right. And I'm sure we have the quality to do that."

The Islanders played perhaps their most complete game of the year Sunday night, when they scored twice in the first eight minutes of the first period and three times in the third. Entering Sunday, New York had scored just four first-period goals all season and had allowed the tie-breaking tally late in the third period in each of its two previous losses.

The win came too late to salvage a winning October for the Islanders but provided valuable points for a team that rode strong starts to playoff berths in each of the last two seasons.

"Points are just as crucial now as they are in April," said defenseman Travis Hamonic, whose goal 61 seconds into the game Sunday gave New York a lead it wouldn't relinquish. "You need to be aware of that, and certainly we are. You want to try and collect as many early on, because it becomes so close at the end of the season. Handfuls of points can dictate a division title or missing the playoffs."

Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop is likely to draw the start against Thomas Greiss, who may be emerging as New York's No. 1 netminder as general manager Garth Snow tries to trade the disgruntled Jaroslav Halak

Bishop is 5-4-1 in 10 regular-season appearances against the Islanders. He took the defeat the last time he opposed New York in a regular-season game on April 4, as he was pulled in the third period after stopping 18 of 23 shots in the Lightning's 5-2 loss at Barclays Center.

Greiss is 3-1-0 in four regular-season games against the Lightning. He earned the win for the Islanders on April 4, when he stopped 32 of 34 shots.

If Greiss starts Tuesday, it will be his second start in as many games since Halak's agent tweeted his displeasure with his client getting in only one practice prior to last Thursday, when Halak took the loss as New York fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins. 4-2.

Newsday reported Monday that Snow has let other general managers know Halak is available in a trade.

Preview: Oilers (7-2) at Maple Leafs (2-4)

Date: November 01, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

TORONTO -- Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews meet again Tuesday night.

This time, they will be opponents.

McDavid is captain of the Edmonton Oilers (7-2-0), who will play Matthews' Toronto Maple Leafs (2-4-3) at Air Canada Centre.

They have some history together.

McDavid, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL draft, and Matthews, the No. 1 pick in the 2016 draft, were teammates on Team North America in September at the World Cup of Hockey.

The 19-year-olds will meet as opponents for the first time on Tuesday.

Team North America, made up of young players, was the hit of the tournament because of its crowd-pleasing style.

Matthews had two goals and three points in three games and McDavid had three assists.

"It helped my confidence for sure," Matthews said. "He was so easy to play with because he just does everything so well at such a high speed. Playing with him was a blast."

Matthews has six goals this season -- four in his first NHL game -- and is tied for the NHL lead. He also has four assists.

McDavid is tied for the NHL lead with 12 points on five goals and seven assists.

"It's going to be cool going up against him," Matthews said on NHL.com. "Edmonton has gotten off to a pretty hot start, so once again it'll be a tough challenge for us. I know all of us will be pretty hungry to get back in the win column."

Both teams are coming off losses on Sunday. The Maple Leafs dropped a 5-1 road decision to the New York Islanders. The Oilers lost 2-0 to the Ottawa Senators in Edmonton.

There has been little or no contact between the McDavid and Matthews since the World Cup.

"Not really," Matthews said. "We're on our respective teams now, so we're pretty focused on that. When the season is over, maybe we'll get together again or end up seeing each other somewhere."

By taking the loss Sunday, the Oilers failed to match their franchise-best start since 1985-86 when they went of 8-1-0.

"We're going to lose some games in an 82-game season," McDavid said. "You can't expect to win each and every night. I thought we played well defensively and when we didn't, 1/8goaltender Cam Talbot 3/8 was a rock back there. We played a good game, they just got the upper hand."

The Oilers hope that their power play is better Tuesday than it was Sunday.

"The power play was not good at all," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. "There was no urgency for me. We felt good because we were in their zone but looked good doing nothing.

"We won 11 of 14 faceoffs in the first period and had six minutes of power play and had seven total shots (in the period). That's not a good recipe. We moved it around but we had no substance, no attack, no tenacity to recover pucks."

Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs have been struggling defensively.

"Everyone's worried about the goal-scoring," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. "That's not our issue. On this team, it's what we give up."

Jhonas Enroth played in goal for Toronto on Sunday. It will probably be Frederik Andersen, who has played seven games, starting against the Oilers.

The Oilers and Maple Leafs will meet again Nov. 29 at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

Preview: Hurricanes (2-4) at Senators (5-3)

Date: November 01, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators will try to build on one of the most emotional victories in franchise history when they play the first of 10 November home games on Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes at Canadian Tire Centre.

They will attempt once again to rally around goalie Craig Anderson, whose wife Nicholle was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Anderson left the team to be with Nicholle after shutting out the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 25 in the first of a three-game road trip to western Canada. When the Senators lost backup goalie Andrew Hammond to a groin injury on Oct. 28 in Calgary, Nicholle urged her husband to rejoin the team.

Anderson arrived in time to pitch another shutout on Sunday, this time a 37-save performance against the Edmonton Oilers. At the end of the night, he broke into tears.

"He held a strong face, but you could still see the pain in his eyes," Senators captain Erik Karlsson said of Anderson, who was recognized on Monday as the NHL's first star of the week for stopping all 59 shots he faced. "He came in here and led by example. He didn't say much, had the same routine, and showed what a true leader he is. He did a hell of a game and got us the two points."

Senators coach Guy Boucher said he was left "speechless" by the character both his goalie and team showed against Edmonton.

"We love hockey, it's a great game," Boucher told reporters Sunday. "But there are things bigger, and there are a lot of people who showed that tonight."

The Senators (5-3-0) will play host to the Hurricanes (2-4-2) twice in November. Last season, they were 1-0-2 against Carolina.

The Hurricanes most recently lost 4-3 at home to the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. Their 3.75 team goals-against average is fourth highest in the league.

"We're giving up too much," coach Bill Peters told the team's website. "It's not a recipe for success, short term or long term.

"Our details aren't very good. It compounds itself. Puck management is the biggest thing we have to address."

After facing the Senators, the Hurricanes will be off until visiting the Nashville Predators on Saturday.

"It's been a tough start, but it will be nice to get a few practices in after a big game in Ottawa, hopefully a good win," center Jordan Staal told the Hurricanes website. "We'll continue to work on the things we need to work on to be a better team."

While Hurricanes center Victor Rask has picked up at least one point in every game this season, Senators winger Mike Hoffman finally scored his first goal of the campaign in Edmonton.

Hoffman has been Ottawa's top marksman in each of the past two seasons.

"Coming in here and facing one of the best teams in the league was a big task for us," Hoffman said of the Edmonton game. "We all wanted to play for (Anderson) and do everything we could. It's a tough situation. He's a huge part of this team and for him to come in here and stand on his head like that ... we're a family."

Preview: Sabres (3-3) at Wild (6-2)

Date: November 01, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- No NHL team has been better than the Minnesota Wild when playing short-handed this season.

Through their first nine games, the Central Division-leading Wild have allowed just one power-play goal, which is best in the league.

But a recent rash of injuries means that Minnesota's ability to play short-handed might get an interesting test on Tuesday, when the Wild (6-2-1) open their November slate with a home game versus the Buffalo Sabres.

They were already without defenseman Marco Scandella and left wing Zach Parise, both of whom are listed as week-to-week with lower body injuries. They also lost forward Zac Dalpe to a knee injury and forward Chris Stewart to illness.

On Monday, Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau led a practice with just 14 healthy skaters, and general manager Chuck Fletcher may need to perform some salary cap gymnastics to have 18 skaters in uniform to face the Sabres.

Of course, one Wild player sure to be in uniform is goalie Devan Dubnyk, who is riding a career-best streak of not allowing a goal in three straight starts.

"He's healthy, which is great," Boudreau deadpanned on Monday, shortly after it was announced the Dubnyk was the NHL's Second Star of the Week for his 180-minute shutout streak. "What can I say? He stopped 94 shots last week."

Just as often as he's deflecting pucks these days, Dubnyk is deflecting credit to his teammates for the success.

"It's the guys in front of me giving me the opportunity to read," said Dubnyk, who blanked the Sabres 4-0 in Buffalo last week. "When you can get your reads and be confident about who's available and who's not on the ice, I just need to be patient and sit on pucks."

The Sabres (3-3-2) are not immune to the injury bug either. After winning 3-1 in Winnipeg on Sunday, they learned that a much-anticipated homecoming for a former University of Minnesota star won't happen on Tuesday.

"Hudson Fasching did not practice today, and that's an indication of where he is with his groin. He will not be able to play (Tuesday)," Sabres coach Dan Bylsma said. Fasching, a forward who signed with Buffalo at the conclusion of his college season last spring, played less than a minute in Winnipeg.

After a relatively light schedule in October, the Sabres head into a stretch where they'll play seven games in the first 12 days of November.

"This picture was coming down the road where we know we're going to be playing every other day, some back-to-backs and a ton of hockey in November," said Bylsma, whose team has won two in a row. "You don't have a ton a practice time either, it's game after game after game, and it's time for us to make some hay."

He'll no doubt look to forward Kyle Okposo, another former University of Minnesota star who signed with Buffalo over the summer. He is tied for the Sabres' points lead, and has eight in his 13 career games versus the Wild.

Preview: Predators (2-5) at Avalanche (4-3)

Date: November 01, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

The good news for the Nashville Predators is the bout of suspected food poisoning that ravaged the locker room 12 days ago is gone. The bad news is they are still battling for wins as they head into Tuesday's matchup against the Colorado Avalanche.

The Predators (2-5-1) are trying to gain traction on a five-game road trip, which continued with a 4-1 loss in San Jose on Saturday night. Nashville is 0-2-1 on the trip but hopes to turn it around against the Avalanche, who are also striving for consistency.

Colorado lost to Winnipeg 1-0 at home on Friday but bounced back to win 3-2 in Arizona 24 hours later.

The Avalanche (4-3) have been shut out twice during the young season and are averaging less than a goal in their three losses. They are averaging 4.25 goals in their four wins.

Tuesday's game might come down to who is more desperate to find consistency.

"We feel like we're just not playing up to our potential right now," Nashville captain Mike Fisher told The Tennessean. "Individually, as a group, you know we're a better team. When you're not getting the results, it's frustrating."

Getting off to a fast start might help the Predators. They have given up the first goal in seven on their eight games.

"We've got to find a way to come out in these games and score the first goal," Predators coach Peter Laviolette told The Tennessean. "Get a lead and try and build off it from there as opposed to always trying to chase the game from behind or never having that comfort of being up a goal. ... Falling into those holes like that, it's not helping."

The Avalanche have had a strange schedule to start the season but are above .500 with eight home games in November. They opened the season at home on Oct. 15 and then went on a four-game Eastern Conference road trip.

The Avalanche had five days off after their road trip before playing on consecutive nights. They play Tuesday after two days off, but center Matt Duchene probably wishes the team could have played sooner.

Duchene, a notoriously slow starter, has five goals and two assists in the last four games. Playing for Canada in the World Cup of Hockey has helped him get off to a quicker start to this season.

"You start the season at that high level, I think it sets you off in the right direction," Duchene told hockeybuzz.com after practice Monday. "I feel good right now, even since the start of the year when those first few games I didn't get anything. I still felt really good with where I was at. It's part of my job to provide offense and I just have to keep working hard and try to do that."

Duchene might be ready for a breakout season, his eighth despite being just 25. Last year, he had one goal through the first 10 games but finished with a career-high 30.

"After the first 10 games, it was probably the lowest of the low I've ever been," Duchene told hockeybuzz.com. "I wasn't even sure if I could keep playing this game. I've been to the bottom, so nothing really fazed me after that. I was able to keep it pretty even keel the rest of the year. Sometimes you make it too hard in your head."

The Avalanche will play Tuesday with just 22 available players after assigning forward Gabriel Bourque to San Antonio of the AHL. Bourque, who made the team on a professional tryout, signed a two-way contract and had been a healthy scratch the past two games.

Preview: Flames (4-5) at Blackhawks (5-3)

Date: November 01, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks were not happy with last week's 3-2 shootout loss on home ice against the Calgary Flames.

Eight days later, the Blackhawks will look for revenge against the Flames in a United Center rematch.

"We're going to have to be ready," Calgary coach Glen Gulutzan said. "We took one out of there, and I'm sure they'll be champing at the bit to get those points back."

The Blackhawks (5-3-1) are playing with more confidence and better effectiveness than they had in the teams' first meeting on Oct. 24. Chicago has won back-to-back games, including a 3-0 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday night that marked the group's first shutout of the season.

Part of the reason for Chicago's recent success is improved special-teams play. The Blackhawks have scored a pair of power-play goals in each of their last two contests, and they went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill against the Kings for their first unblemished performance of the year.

Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews said he and his teammates needed to build upon their improved special-teams play. The Hawks are ranked last in the NHL with a 53.1 success rate (17-for-32) on the penalty kill despite playing better in their last contest.

"We want to keep that going for a while, get our (penalty kill) percentage back down where it needs to be," Toews said. "At the end of the day, statistics on the penalty kill will follow our effort. I've been saying this the last couple of games: Our five-on-five effort, when it's there, our special teams follow."

Calgary (4-5-1) already has proved its ability to win in front of a hostile Blackhawks crowd. Newcomer Kris Versteeg scored the tiebreaking goal in the seventh round of the shootout last week, which quickly silenced Chicago fans who have become accustomed to success.

The Flames have won three of their past four contests and are 2-1-1 on the road to start the season. On Tuesday, Calgary will kick off a four-game road trip that also includes visits to the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks.

"This is a huge road trip," Flames defenseman Mark Giordano said. "We had two big wins on the road earlier in the week. Hopefully, we can carry some of that into the next few games."

Calgary goaltender Brian Elliott started the first game against Chicago. He stopped 31 of 33 shots and denied seven shootout opportunities to earn his first victory of the season.

Chicago goaltender Corey Crawford turned aside 29 of 31 shots in his first outing against the Flames. Coach Joel Quenneville indicated that Crawford would be in net again Tuesday.

Both teams have fared well in scoring to start the season. Chicago entered Monday ranked No. 5 in the league with 3.33 goals per game, and Calgary was ranked No. 8 with 3.00 goals per game.

Toews will try to score in back-to-back games after snapping an eight-game drought Sunday night.

"We're playing better there, and you know it's only improving," Toews said. "I think it's just about the chances. It's nice to feel comfortable shooting that puck finally, getting through traffic, seeing one go in. Hopefully we'll keep going and getting that confidence that comes with it."

Preview: Anaheim Ducks (3-4-2) at Los Angeles Kings (4-5-0)
By Kyle Compeau
Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at 10:30 pm (STAPLES Center)
The Line: Los Angeles Kings -135 / Anaheim Ducks +122 --- Over/Under: 5
TV:

The Anaheim Ducks look to make a splash on the road as they face off against the Los Angeles Kings in a battle of Pacific division foes.

The Ducks look to build on a big win against the Nashville Predators as they take on their arch rivals from Los Angeles in what should be a heated affair late on Tuesday night. The Ducks are off to another slow start as they are 3-4-2 in their first nine games but there is plenty of time for them to catch up and they have had their offense clicking so far which is something they couldn’t say last season they just haven’t caught a ton of breaks in the early going. Anaheim will turn to John Gibson in this one who is off to a very nice start in the Anaheim crease and he will match up with Petr Budaj who has bee remarkable since taking over for the injured Jonathan Quick as he is 4-2 with a 1.99 GAA in six starts.

The Kings meanwhile are playing much better since their ugly start to the season and are almost back to the .500 mark and what better way to get their than a win at home against their in-state and divisional rivals from Anaheim. The Kings head into this season looking to get back to the playoffs once again and spark up some magic from their recent past as they have a winning mentality in Los Angeles right now that not many teams outside of Chicago can boast about. The Kings are slight favourites in this spot but we can expect some action to come in on the Ducks after their big win against the Predators so the line could move before puck drop.

The Ducks are 41-18 in their last 59 against the Pacific and 1-6 in their last seven road games while the Kings are 11-4 in their last 15 Tuesday games and 2-5 in their last seven against the Pacific. Budaj is playing very well but I think Gibson gives the Ducks the edge and in a game that figures to be close I will take the value with the visitors.
