Preview: Giants at Rockies
Gracenote
Jul 3, 2018

The San Francisco Giants hit a bump on their road trip in the series opener but hope to bounce back when they visit the Colorado Rockies for the middle contest of their three-game set. San Francisco began its trek by sweeping a three-game series in Arizona but squandered a two-run lead in the late innings on Monday and dropped a 5-2 decision at Coors Field.

Buster Posey celebrated being inducted into the Arizona Fall League Hall of Fame earlier in the day by hitting a pair of doubles and driving in a run. The veteran has gone 7-for-13 during his four-game hitting streak and is riding back-to-back multi-hit performances. Nolan Arenado went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Rockies scored three times in the seventh inning and twice in the eighth to post their fourth win in five games. Arenado is 6-for-18 with three home runs and five RBIs in his last five contests.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Chris Stratton (8-5, 4.45 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Antonio Senzatela (2-1, 6.23)

Stratton looks to atone for his last start as he surrendered five runs and eight hits over four innings against Colorado but escaped with a no-decision. The 27-year-old native of Mississippi also served up a homer in the outing after keeping the ball in the park in each of his previous five turns. Stratton has yet to lose to the Rockies, going 1-0 despite posting a 6.19 ERA in three starts and one relief appearance - with the victory coming at home on May 19.

Senzatela will be making his first start of the season for the Rockies - and first appearance since April 27, when he picked up the win after working 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief at Miami. The 23-year-old Venezuelan made eight starts for Triple-A Albuquerque before being recalled, going 3-1 with a 2.15 ERA. Senzatela went 3-0 with a 4.24 ERA in three starts and two relief appearances against San Francisco as a rookie last season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rockies starting pitchers have gone 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA over the last seven games.

2. San Francisco OF Gorkys Hernandez has hit five of his 11 homers this season against the Rockies.

3. Colorado RHP Chad Bettis (finger) is questionable to make his scheduled start against Seattle on Friday.

Preview: Indians at Royals
Gracenote
Jul 3, 2018

Francisco Lindor failed to reach his lofty expectations in June, but he is setting an incredibly high bar for himself only two games into July. The two-time All-Star attempts to maintain his torrid offensive pace and continue his recent domination of the Royals when the Cleveland Indians visit Kansas City for the second of three games between the best and worst teams in the American League Central.

Lindor finished June with a bit of a flurry to raise his offensive marks for the month to a .243 batting average, six homers and 12 RBIs. The 24-year-old Puerto Rican shortstop began July by going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a homer, two RBIs and four runs scored in Sunday's 15-3 rout in Oakland and may have outdid himself in Monday's 9-3 series-opening win versus Kansas City, hitting a grand slam and a three-run homer for a career-high seven RBIs to go along with three runs scored. The Royals own the worst offense in the majors and have totaled 21 runs while dropping five of seven against Cleveland this season. The Royals have scored four runs or fewer in 23 of their last 24 games and dropped 23 of 28 since the beginning of June.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FS Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Shane Bieber (3-0, 2.22 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (4-7, 4.94)

Bieber has permitted a total of two runs and struck out 21 versus only three walks while winning all three of his starts since his recall from Triple-A Columbus on June 17. The 23-year-old gave up one run on six hits while fanning five en route to a victory at St. Louis on Wednesday. Bieber earned his promotion by going 6-1 with a 1.29 ERA in 12 turns with the Clippers and will make his fifth career big-league start - first against Kansas City - on Tuesday.

Duffy has settled into a bit of a groove over his last seven turns, yielding one run or less in five of those outings while logging at least six innings six times. The former third-round pick is 0-3 with a 6.32 ERA in six home turns this season but allowed one run and fanned seven in a win at Milwaukee on Wednesday. Duffy is 2-8 with a 5.06 ERA all-time versus the Indians and has surrendered 12 runs over nine innings while losing both of his starts against them this year.

WALK-OFFS

1. Lindor is 9-for-12 with four home runs, 10 RBIs and eight runs scored in his last three games versus Kansas City. His 17 career homers against the Royals are seven more than he has against any other opponent.

2. Kansas City 2B Whit Merrifield is batting .409 during a five-game hitting streak.

3. Cleveland OF Lonnie Chisenhall, who was a late scratch with a strained left calf Monday, will be placed on the disabled list shortly, according to manager Terry Francona.

Preview: Padres at Athletics
Gracenote
Jul 2, 2018

The Oakland Athletics had a six-game winning streak snapped on Sunday but remain one of the pleasant surprises of the first half of the season. The Athletics will try to get back into the win column and keep the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners in sight in the American League West when they host the San Diego Padres in the opener of a two-game interleague series on Tuesday.

Oakland enters the week eight games behind second-place Seattle in the AL West and is staring at a rough schedule heading into the All-Star break, with 11 straight on the road - including trips to Cleveland and Houston - after finishing up with the Padres. The Athletics took the first two from the Indians at home over the weekend but witnessed a rare letdown from the pitching staff in a 15-3 setback on Sunday. San Diego is sitting in last place in the National League West and was outscored 16-6 in dropping two to Oakland at home on June 19 and 20. The Padres are trying to snap a streak of six straight series losses and will send lefty Clayton Richard to the mound on Tuesday opposite Athletics right-hander Chris Bassitt.

TV: 9:05 p.m. ET, FS San Diego, NBCS California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Padres LH Clayton Richard (7-7, 4.29 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Chris Bassitt (1-3, 2.82)

Richard had a streak of four straight wins come to an end at Texas on Wednesday, when he was reached for four runs and 10 hits in seven innings. The 34-year-old worked at least six innings in each of his last 10 starts and went at least seven frames in seven of those outings. Wednesday's loss dropped Richard to 9-5 with a 3.50 ERA in 23 career interleague games - 18 starts.

Bassitt earned his first win since rejoining the rotation when he held the Detroit Tigers scoreless while scattering two hits and five walks over six innings on Wednesday. The five walks marked a season high for the Ohio native, who issued a total of three walks over 16 1/3 innings in his first three outings. Bassitt is seeing the Padres for the first time and is 0-2 with a 2.45 ERA in two career interleague outings.

WALK-OFFS

Preview: Cardinals at Diamondbacks
Gracenote
Jul 3, 2018

After enduring a disappointing homestand, the St. Louis Cardinals got their nine-game road trip off to a good start. The Cardinals attempt to clinch a series victory when they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game set.

St. Louis, which dropped the final four contests of its six-game homestand, began its trek with a four-run first inning on Monday and rode to a 6-3 victory. Yadier Molina homered and drove in three runs while Jedd Gyorko also went deep and notched a pair of RBIs for the Cardinals, who allowed at least five runs in each game during their slide. Arizona's 8-2 road trip is a distant memory as the club has lost the first four contests of its 10-game homestand. Paul Goldschmidt registered four of the Diamondbacks' nine hits for his second performance with at least three hits in five games and also drove in a run while David Peralta notched a pair to improve to 6-for-16 during his four-game hitting streak.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS Midwest (St. Louis), FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Jack Flaherty (3-3, 2.92 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Greinke (8-5, 3.41)

Flaherty is coming off a loss to Cleveland on Wednesday in which he yielded four runs on six hits - two homers - and two walks in four innings. The 22-year-old Californian was superb in his previous three turns, going 1-0 while allowing two runs and six hits with 26 strikeouts over 18 1/3 frames. Flaherty will be facing the Diamondbacks for the first time in his career.

Greinke helped Arizona go 8-2 on its recent road trip by winning all three of his starts on the trek. The 34-year-old Floridian allowed three runs over 19 1/3 innings on the trip after being tagged by Pittsburgh for five runs on five hits and four walks in 4 2/3 frames in his last turn at home. Greinke fell to 12-5 with a 3.42 ERA in 19 career appearances (17 starts) against the Cardinals on April 7, when he yielded five runs and nine hits in five innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Diamondbacks OF A.J. Pollock (thumb) returned from the disabled list Monday and went 0-for-4 but scored a run.

2. St. Louis placed Dexter Fowler on the paternity list and recalled fellow OF Tyler O'Neill from Triple-A Memphis.

3. Arizona purchased the contract of RHP Joey Krehbiel from Triple-A Reno, optioned 1B Christian Walker and RHP Silvino Bracho to the Aces and released RHP Troy Scribner.

Preview: Angels at Mariners
Gracenote
Jul 2, 2018

The Seattle Mariners continue to keep the pressure on the defending champion Houston Astros in the American League West while Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels struggle to keep pace. The Mariners will try to keep the Angels down when they host the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday.

Seattle entered the week a half-game behind the Astros in the AL West standings and owns the major's longest winning streak at seven in a row after picking on last-place clubs Baltimore and Kansas City. The Angels are losers of seven of their last nine but had a chance to sweep the Orioles in a three-game series over the weekend before falling short on Sunday in an 8-2 setback. Los Angeles faces a tough challenge if it hopes to climb back into the race before the All-Star break with six games each against the Mariners and the Los Angeles Dodgers left in the first half. The Angels will try to get off on the right foot Tuesday by sending left-hander Andrew Heaney to the mound while the Mariners counter with lefty Wade LeBlanc.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FS West (Los Angeles), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Andrew Heaney (4-5, 3.95 ERA) vs. Mariners LH Wade LeBlanc (3-0, 3.38)

Heaney is trying to bounce back after getting knocked around for six runs on eight hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings at Boston on Wednesday. The 27-year-old allowed four runs in 15 innings over his previous two outings but is struggling with his consistency. Heaney preceded the two solid outings by yielding five runs and seven hits over three innings in a loss at Seattle on June 11.

LeBlanc is searching for consistency as well and followed up 7 2/3 scoreless innings against the Red Sox on June 16 by getting pounded for a total of 10 runs - nine earned - and 18 hits across 10 1/3 innings in his next two outings. The veteran is already past his innings total from last season, when he worked exclusively as a reliever for the Pittsburgh Pirates. LeBlanc went up against Heaney on June 11 and earned the win while allowing two runs in five frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners RHP Edwin Diaz was named the AL's Reliever of the Month for June after converting 12 of 13 save opportunities in the month.

2. Trout went 0-for-4 on Sunday and failed to reach base for the 12th time in 85 games this season.

3. Los Angeles RHP/DH Shohei Ohtani (elbow) is expected to take batting practice with the team this week.

Matt Kemp has torched Pittsburgh pitching in four meetings this season and looks to inflict more damage when the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Pirates on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Kemp went 5-for-5 with a homer, four RBIs and four runs scored on Monday as Los Angeles racked up season highs in runs and hits (21) en route to a 17-1 victory.

Kemp recorded a homer and five RBIs versus the Pirates on June 6 and is a lava-like 10-for-17 with two blasts, 12 RBIs and nine runs scored against them this season. Yasiel Puig went 3-for-5 with a season-high four RBIs and the Dodgers batted around three times while winning their second straight game after losing four of their previous five. Pittsburgh allowed a season high in runs and is 2-2 on a six-game road trip that began with three games in San Diego. The slumping Starling Marte is expected to miss his third straight start as the Pirates work with him on the side after he batted just .183 in June.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Ivan Nova (4-5, 4.02 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (1-4, 2.84)

Nova did not factor in the decision against the New York Mets in his last turn after giving up three runs and five hits over six innings. The 31-year-old allowed just two runs and 12 hits over 19 2/3 frames in his previous three turns, going 2-0 in that stretch. Nova is 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA in two career starts versus the Dodgers but has struggled against Kemp (3-for-9).

Kershaw will be making his third start since coming off the disabled list due to a lower back injury. The 30-year-old, who hasn't won since April 15, allowed one run and four hits in five innings against the Chicago Cubs in his last turn. Kershaw is 2-3 with a 3.18 ERA in 11 career starts against the Pirates and has shut down Corey Dickerson (2-for-12, eight strikeouts).

WALK-OFFS

1. Kemp, who matched his career high for hits on Monday, is 8-for-9 this month after also notching a homer and four RBIs in Sunday's victory over Colorado.

2. Pittsburgh recalled RHP Nick Kingham - who allowed three homers in three-plus innings on Monday - from Triple-A Indianapolis, optioned OF-1B Jose Osuna to the same affiliate, designated LHP Enny Romero for assignment and sent UTL Sean Rodriguez (quadriceps) to Indianapolis to begin a rehab assignment.

3. Los Angeles 1B Cody Bellinger hit his 17th homer on Monday and has gone deep five times over his last 11 games.
