Kodiak says that umpires mean nothing but this article says different

quote:
If studying the ‘over/under’ tendencies of the home plate umpire isn’t part of your baseball handicapping, you could be missing out on cashing many more winning tickets.
Despite Major League baseball consolidating American and National League umpires a couple of years ago – and the advent of the QuesTec system utilized in about 10 ballparks – there still remains quite a difference in the strike zone from umpire to umpire.
Paying attention to the wind at Wrigley Field and Fenway Park is all well and good, but knowing that umpire Jim Joyce has seen the ‘over’ cash in 15 of his 19 games behind home plate this season is just as important when betting totals.
Joyce, a 15-year veteran of the professional baseball wars, seems to have a different strike zone than last year when the ‘under’ was 24-11. There is an average of 5.4 walks and 12.2 strike outs per game, and an average of 10.1 runs per outing this season when Joyce dons the mask.
It should be noted there have been 11 runs scored in each of Joyce’s last five games behind the dish, with each leaping ‘over’ the closing total.
Crew chief Joe West, a 25-year veteran, has seen the ‘over’ go 17-9 in his 26 efforts behind the plate. There is an average of 6.7 walks, 13.7 strike outs and 11.1 runs per game with West calling balls and strikes this season. That’s a reversal in form from the 2002 campaign, when the ‘under’ went 18-11.
The ‘over’ is 8-2 in West’s last 10 home plate appearances this season.
Paul Nauret has had a wide strike zone during the current campaign, helping the ‘under’ go 12-3 during his 15 stints behind the plate. There has been an average of just 8.07 runs per game (11 ks, 5 walks) when the umpire with 2 ½ years of experience dons the mask.
A chart of 'over/under' trends for some major league umpires appears below.
