Troy Polamalu retires from the NFL

Troy Polamalu, whose iconic long hair roamed the Pittsburgh Steelers' defensive backfield for 12 seasons, is retiring, according to a report on Scout.com.
The report says Polamalu has informed the Steelers of his decision. He was an eight-time Pro-Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro. He announced his decision in a phone interview with Scout.
"It's all about family," Polamalu said. "I live here in Pittsburgh now, and since the end of the season I've had a chance to enjoy my family on a level I never had before. It was awesome."

Maybe one of the last strong safety's you see. They get fewer and fewer by the year. In today's NFL secondary, it is best to play 3 corners and a free safety. Or even be in nickel the entire game.

Hopefully he will stay on and find a job in the organization as a coach somewhere in the secondary. All these new DBs and safeties the Strelers have been and will be drafting can benefit from his knowledge!

Just saying that looks to me like in the future football won't look at all like we will remember it. They have already started to slowly legislate defense completely out of the game. Makes past records (passing especially) meaningless compared to today's game.
Funny to think of all the boxers over the years. Who did not know they were just getting beat up till they would be bat shit crazy. Really was always an activity for thuggish guys who knew no other way to make a buck. Not saying I did not appreciate their competitiveness…… but did not appreciate their intelligence!

Not true. SS is more prevalent then ever. You can still play 3 corners and 2 safeties. Some teams have 3 safeties on the field at the same time. Safeties are getting more important not less
