There is NO SUCH THING as a trap line. If a line looks funny to you, its becasue you dont have enough information on the game.

Dodo! Maybe you're onto something there...

on the fence as to trap or no trap...but for the sake of getting to the bottom of this issue...would somebody PLEASE post a trap line before the game...why its a trap and with the side or total bet...then i can make a decision on the issue...

Tend to agree with Railbird. I think trap lines are more mythology than fact.

If the line looks funny and you lose, then everbody complains about a "trap".

If the line looks funny and you win, then everybody says it was an easy game.

From this oldman's perspective, the closest way to a line being a "trap" is when the book sets the line with full anticipation as to where the public action will be. The line is overly inflated on one side or the other, generally the favorite, but not always. Thus, the so called "trap" comes in if one plays into the overinflated line. This is where the term comes from but in reality, it is merely an inflated line not a "trap".

my 2 cents is that it depends on what you mean by the term "trap"....

Does Vegas know the outcome of certain games and then sets a line to try and intice the public into betting on the losing team? NO

Does Vegas have a very good understanding of the tendencies of the public and can they at times estimate how the public will bet a game? YES

When Vegas knows that the public will be more likely to bet one side of a game rather than the other, do they set lines that gives the house extra line-value? YES

Oldman, that is PRECISELY what a Trap line is. You defined it perfectly. When the book is BEGGING you to take a certain side by inflating the line. That is a trap line. I couldn't have said it better myself.

JCAMBERT...i dont think oldman means what you do. you mean an inglated line for a dog. he means for a favorite, and then the RESULTING BET into the bad, inflated line on the fav is a trap.

If you read his post, you will see he says it's "generally the favorite" which is correct. It IS generally the favorite. An inflated line, one way OR THE OTHER, where they are practically begging the general public to be one certain way, is the very definition of a trap line, and, they most certainly do exist.

No, in my reply, I said a line could be set either a favorite or a dog that the book anticipates where public action will fall and inflates or deflates the line accordingly. More times than not it is a favorite, but there are times where you lose value on the dog as well.

For the record, I stated before the game started that I felt Syracuse was a trap, and, by most accounts, that was GTown's game to cover. And, I felt that Gonzaga was also a trap.

Understood, which is why I waited until late to play Georgetown +3.5. I saw what you saw, it is just a question of terminology. The line was off and the game played out in Georgetown's favor. Syracuse was very fortunate to win that game. As it turned out, the books probably got a pretty good share of being middled as many had Cuse at -2.5 and others the Hoyas at +3.5.

The Gonzaga line was overinflated as are a number of road favorites. The books know that the public will lean toward the favorite, whether it be at home or on the road, and will make the player pay the price to take a favorite in these type of spots.

How was Syracuse a "trap?" The sportsbooks opened Georgetown as a small fav.

I know 2 games isn't exactly a representative sample, but it looks like both "trap" teams (Cuse and Zaga) are gonna cover.

Don't care if it is/isn't a trap, I just care about the cover!

Do you have anymore TRAP plays for us.

Goes to show, Boys and Girls, you need to do your homework instead of buying into the Assumptions of others who think they know the deal with Vegas.
