Police Bust Greater Hartford Sports Gambling Ring

The host of a radio sports talk show, a former Wolcott town councilman and 11 other people have been arrested by state police in connection with an illegal sports betting operation.
Lt. J. Paul Vance said that the betting involved several sports, college as well as professional.
Sebastian, whose real name is Joseph Schlosser, hosts "WTIC's Pregame Blitz" on Monday and Thursday evenings with Tebucky Jones, the former New England Patriot.
The call-in radio show, in which Sebastian frequently talks about betting on games, is broadcast live before weeknight NFL games carried by WTIC radio.

"The show won't be on tomorrow," Steven Salhany, the station operations manager, said Wednesday night. "I have to decline further comment at this point."
Sebastian could not be reached Wednesday. The 62-year-old Farmington resident faces charges of professional gambling and transmitting gambling information.
Randy Petroniro, 46, who resigned his position as a town councilman in Wolcott on Tuesday, has also been arrested. Petroniro has been charged with professional gambling and transmitting gambling information.
Petroniro was not at home to comment when a reporter visited on Wednesday evening.
Police said the gambling ring operated in and around Hartford. Police have seized a number of luxury automobiles they say were bought with proceeds from the operation, including a Ferrari and a Mercedes Benz.
Also arrested were Constantine Galanis, 44, of Bristol; James Loughery, 55, of Wethersfield; Anthony DiSantis, 48, of Wolcott; Patrick Corry, 53, of Wethersfield; Brett Margentino, 31, of Berlin; Leo Barney, 81, of Bristol; Christopher Peck, 43, of Berlin; Maryanne Vece, 56, of Westbrook; Tommy Allen, 36, of Bloomfield; Edward Jamele, 57, of Southington; and Kelvin Townsend, 42, of Hartford.
The individuals face a number of charges, including corrupt organizations and racketeering activity (C.O.R.A.), conspiracy to engage in C.O.R.A., professional gambling, transmitting gambling information, conspiracy to engage in professional gambling, maintaining gambling premises and possession of gambling records.
Vance said that all those arrested were involved with the ring's operation and that police expect to make additional arrests.
The arrests came after a yearlong investigation involving the FBI, the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, the Statewide Organized Crime Investigative Task Force and the chief state's attorney's office.
"It involved a lot of technology and a lot of good old-fashioned police work and, again, the seizure of records," Vance said.
Courant staff writers Ed Mahoney and Kim Velsey and FoxCT reporter Laurie Perez contributed to this story

Connecticut state police have arrested 13 people, including a radio personality, accused of involvement in an illegal sports betting ring.

The gambling operation was allegedly based in and around Hartford.

Police said they seized several luxury cars, including a Ferrari and a Mercedes Benz, that were purchased with proceeds from the betting.

Among those arrested was Joseph Schlosser, a radio sports talk show host who uses the on-air name Sebastian.

WTIC operations manager Steven Salhany told the Hartford Courant that Sebastian's program would not air Thursday night, but declined further comment.

The newspaper said Schlosser could not be reached for comment.

that's what I was thinking....

The individuals face a number of charges, including corrupt organizations and racketeering activity (C.O.R.A.), conspiracy to engage in C.O.R.A., professional gambling, transmitting gambling information, conspiracy to engage in professional gambling, maintaining gambling premises and possession of gambling records.

unless Seabass was a bookie he did nothing illegal ( IMO) as long as he paid his taxes. I don't think you can easily be a tout and a bookie at the same time. Are you going to sell picks and then book bets on your picks ? Seems like a HUGE conflict of interests.

You'd need records to pay taxes.

Maintaining gambling premises.....did he run a casino at his home ?

pro gambling is illegal ?

Transmitting gambling info ? Is that selling his picks or betting online ?

I think he was targeted for being a radio personality talking about betting sports.

I don't like the guy, have met him and talked to him on the air.

The arrests came after a year-long investigation involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, the Statewide Organized Crime Investigative Task Force and the Chief State's Attorney's Office.

Followed his career for over 10 years or so. First heard him in early 90s, his show was mostly a Stern ripoff, lots of sex talk, comedy bits, local celebrities. Big sports fan and a degenerate gambling fan so a lot of talk about that. As far as local talent he was among the best in the country for a few years. Then he just became less and less willing to do the work that went into a good 5:30 in the morning talk show. From 4.5 hours with few ads to three hours with a lot of ads. Lot less prepared to talk about anything interesting, instead "I like Oakland +6." But if a guy can pull it off that's a sweet deal: on the radio a couple hours per week, sell picks and eligible for social security benefits. Risking all that was just being stupid

My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.

betroyal (SBR rating D) locks 30 players out of their accounts citing "syndicate play." Royal Sports had advertised with a handicapper that was having a successful year before the book was purchased by SBG Global (SBR rating D-). The capper repeatedly warned what was now SBG's operation that he and his users were on a winning streak but the book said that it was not concerned because "all handicappers eventually lose." He and the players following his picks won in excess of six figures. The sportsbook now claims it is investigating the group for fraud and has frozen all winnings. SBR to interview the handicapper and contact SBG before updating in further detail. | Read SBRforum poster's report
editor correction: Pay-service handicapper counts 18 frozen accounts, which was confirmed by betroyal account manager. Five players file complaint with SBR.

I'm sure he was betting his own sides. It's not like he could move lines ( like a RAS) and come back on the other side. He touted major sports not stuff like tennis.
