EPO's effect is to raise hematocrit levels allowing the blood to carry more oxygen. While EPO is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the body, the form used to dope is a variant of the naturally occurring EPO, made from recombinant DNA, and theoretically could be detected. However, there are currently no tests that are 100% reliable at detecting EPO abuse. The drug has become readily available in recent years as a treatment for anemia associated with cancer chemotherapy, HIV-infected, AZT-treated individuals, chronic renal failure predialysis, and as an alternative to blood transfusion in certain elective, non-cardiac, non-vascular surgical procedures.
