Tom Brady indicated Saturday that he's planning to play for another 10 years.
That was his response to the Ryan Mallett pick in the third round. Brady turns 34 this summer. It's a good bet that he has five more years left as a starter, but it's hard to believe he'll play to age 43 or 44. Mallett has a better chance of ending up as a trade chip than Brady's successor. Patriots, Tom Brady agree to three-year, $27 million contract extension

By Brian McIntyre | Shutdown Corner – 7 hours ago

The New England Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady have agreed to a three-year contract extension that should keep the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player under contract at a team-friendly rate for the remainder of his career, Peter King of Sports Illustrated reports.
Brady was under contract through the 2014 season with base salaries of $9.75 million and a $5 million roster bonuses in each season. Brady's cap number in 2013 and 2014 were scheduled to be an astronomical $21.8 million in each season. As Shutdown Corner noted in our offseason TPS report for the Patriots, an extension through the 2017 season would help reduce that cap figure in 2013 and ensure that Brady is a Patriot until he is 40, an age Brady has said he'd like to reach in his playing career.

If he plays that long and doesn't win another super bowl... i wonder if he will self destruct. the man is on a mission. Good luck Tom. Just so long as the Chargers or the Eagles aren't in your path.

Brady now makes basically the same as Kevin Kolb.

He and the girlfriends/ wife probably have over 200 million in the bank anyway.

Took a cut in pay so he could stay a Patriot for life and enable the Pats to free up cap space. 2nd time he has done that.

Think Peyton Manning would do that? You already know the answer.

Tom will probably known as the all time favorite New England /Boston athlete, ahead of Ted Williams, Larry Bird and Bobby Orr .

While Brady is one of my favorite QBs ( Current time ) , I think the above statement may be off a little .......
Class move on his part .

The answer is yes , before his last contract with the colts he said numerous times he wanted to take less to free up money for others.

Irsay and team president Bill Polian still seem keen to make a statement by making Manning the top earner in the NFL and building their team around him, but the veteran quarterback would prefer some of the money to be used elsewhere.
"While I appreciate Jim Irsay offering to make me the highest-paid player," Manning told The Indianapolis Star. "I told him I'd rather he save that money and keep whoever it is - Joe Addai, Charlie Johnson, whoever that may be.
"I'm willing to take less than they've offered if they are going to take that money to keep players we need to keep and go get other players.
"All I want is for them to have the cap and the cash to keep the players they want to keep and to sign other players."
It must be noted that it is not as though manning will not be paid handsomely, he will still receive around the $18 million a year deal that Tom Brady picks up from his deal with the New England Patriots.

I know I wouldn't. Although maybe in Tom Brady exact position I would consider it.

If you were in his shoes would you do that Pat.

I know you didn't ask me but....I would. Did he leave some money on the table? Probably some. But I believe this all but garauntees his money from his current contract to the extention. Most of the big year big money contracts the player rarely sees all of it anyway.

This, with out a doubt, makess the team around him better.

While he locks up a lot of $ in his deal, he basically is saying he doesn't care how much $ he makes the last 3 years of it.

I dunno, I'd just never do that for an owner with what television contracts, luxury suites, tickets and merchandise revenue are these days. Not to mention there is a mall around the stadium in large part because of Brady.

I guess Tom could play into his 40s as long as he keeps getting great protection from his O Line.

There is a big assumption on Brady's part that this money will go to other players. I know your not saying this money is going into Krafts pockets...but you need to forget about all that other stuff.
We will see what they do with the cap space.

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft believes that Tom Brady 'has a lot of play left' and hopes Jimmy Garoppolo 'doesn't get a chance to start for a long, long time'

There's a lot of talk surrounding the New England Patriots and the "window" that the franchise has to succeed with Tom Brady at the helm of the offense.

The idea that the Patriots only have to long to take advantage of Brady as an elite NFL quarterback has some fans in a state of panic over Bill Belichick's at times perceived refusal to add the "weapons for Brady" rather than building towards the future. During the 2014 NFL Draft, Belichick made a bold move toward the latter direction by choosing to draft Eastern Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round.

While some have interpreted the move as a signal for the end of the Brady Era, others, such as owner Robert Kraft, think that the team's franchise player has some tread on the tires still.

Earlier this week, Kraft appeared at the Moms Football Clinic at the Dana Farber Fieldhouse, taking some time to talk about Brady, Garoppolo and the future of the franchise in an interview with the NFL Network.

In Kraft's eyes, the future still wears No. 12:

"From my point of view, and I think from our organization, we believe that Tom has a lot of play left," Kraft said. "The way that he takes care of his body, the way he eats, the way he plays, the way he trains, people look up to him. You know, at the same time, that's a position -- if you don't have someone strong at that position -- look at what happened, how Tommy took over in that game after 9/11 when we got delayed a week and Mo Lewis from the Jets took Drew out. If we didn't have someone like Tommy in our system, it would've been very devastating.
"In any business, you always need disaster insurance, the most important thing. Now, we have a young man that -- I hope he's as good as everyone feels. I also hope he doesn't get a chance to start for a long, long time."

That being said, fans and media will have to wait a little longer to see the team's newest QB in action, with Garoppolo missing Friday's OTA session.
