Titans backup quarterback out for season with lacerated spleen

Tennessee backup quarterback Billy Volek will miss the rest of the season because of an internal injury suffered in his first NFL start.

Team spokesman Robbie Bohren said this morning that Volek suffered a lacerated spleen in Sunday's 28-to-26 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Volek threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another while substituting for Steve McNair.

The Titans starting quarterback was unable to move on his sprained left ankle because of a cracked bone spur.

The Titans originally reported Volek had soreness in his ribs, but Volek complained of abdominal pain Monday.

The Tennessean reports Volek was admitted to Baptist Hospital in Nashville last night.

The word is that they may bring Neil O Donnell back in...he knows the offense and could probably step in if McNair still cannot go.

how does one lacerate a spleen?

The spleen is located near the lower part of the ribs. in this location it has the widest spaces. the spaces are called the innercostal spaces.. if a person was to take a hit the spleen could be forced between this space causing it to split open. (think of a full ballon being pressed between your fingers) Its a rare injury but can happen in a collision of sizable porportion.
