Line on the move in this Week 7 matchup

The opener of Week 7's schedule pits the Saskatchewan Roughriders at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and books posted this as a Pick when lines opened Monday.

With kickoff approaching, however, the line is on the move as the Bombers are now being offered as 1.5-point home dogs at offshore books. Vegas books had the game off the board, but Station Casinos opened the Bombers as 1-point dogs early Wednesday morning.

At 5-1 straight up and against the spread, the Bombers have been the best bet to start the season. The Riders head into the Week 7 matchup 3-2 SU and

KEY STAT: St Johnstone scored just 13 league away goals last term

EXPERT VERDICT: Slovakia’s Spartak Trnava are unbeaten in five Europa League outings, keeping three clean sheets, and they’re 2-1 up after the away leg of this tie. St Johnstone, who have conceded in all three European fixtures this summer and lost ten of their 19 away Premiership away games last season, could suffer on the road once more.

RECOMMENDATION: Spartak Trvana to win 1-0

KEY STAT: The English top flight is more than 70 Uefa coefficient points stronger than Slovakia’s

EXPERT VERDICT: After securing a 0-0 draw in the first leg, Hull have done most of the hard work against Trencin and should be able to finish the job on home soil. Hull were solid at the KC Stadium last season, conceding just 21 goals in 19 games, and everything points to the home win that will send the Tigers through to the playoffs.

RECOMMENDATION: Hull to win 2-0

KEY STAT: Sociedad conceded 36 away league goals last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Aberdeen have plenty of work to do after losing the first leg 2-0 in Spain last Thursday, but that was the only defeat the Dons have suffered in five Europa League outings this term. This inexperienced Real Sociedad outfit conceded more goals on the road than any other top-half team in La Liga last season and Aberdeen can land a shock win.

RECOMMENDATION: Aberdeen

KEY STAT: PSG have lost just one of their last 11 away league matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Paris St-Germain have failed to win their opening game in the last three seasons but shouldn't have many problems winning at Reims, who were mid-table last season. Serge Aurier and David Luiz are the only major signings for PSG, who look a settled unit and deserve their status as red-hot title favourites.

RECOMMENDATION: PSG to win 2-0

KEY STAT: Blackburn have won five of their last seven league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Cardiff will be eager to make their stay in the Championship a brief one after last term’s relegation, but a trip to Ewood Park looks a tough opening assignment. Blackburn were just two points away from the final playoff berth after a 12-match unbeaten run and Jordan Rhodes' quality in front of goal could prove the difference.

KEY STAT: Bristol City drew 19 times in League One last term

EXPERT VERDICT: Sheffield United won both games against Bristol City last season but this looks likely to be a tighter affair between two of League One's fancied teams. Both sides have recruited heavily in a bid to secure a return to the second tier and with early season nerves playing their part, it may end up all-square.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

At the Gate - Thursday
By Mike Dempsey

We had a good day on Wednesday with five recommended exactas, the payoffs coming back at $18.80, $12.80, $48.00, $50.00 and $31.80.

The feature on Wednesday was the John’s Call and my top pick Tricky Hit got a rail-skimming ride in the stretch to poke his head in front in deep stretch, but then I thought Holiday Star got his nose in front at the wire. That would have been a bad beat, separated by such a narrow margin after traveling 1 5/8 miles.

I said a few profanities under my breath, but it turned out my top pick Tricky Hit did indeed get his nostril in front at the wire, paying $9.10, and topping a recommended exacta payoff of $31.80 and trifecta for $240.00.

The $2 double with my top pick Silver Freak ($13.40) in the eight race paid a hefty $61.00.

Thursday’s stake is the $100,000 Birdstone and it drew just six runners and was carded as race four so it will be in the early Pick 5.

I am going try to beat 4-5 morning line favorite Micromanage with Don Dulce, who made a mild late rally to finish fourth last out in the Salvatore Mile (G3) at Monmouth Park. The winner Itsmyluckyday came back to run a good second in the Whitney Handicap (G1) last Saturday while the third place finisher Valid came back to win the Monmouth Cup (G2) in his next start.

The gelding has not done much this year going 0 for 7 with a couple of seconds after landing in the exacta in 7 of 11 starts last year. He does have a long-winded pedigree, by Maria's Mon out of a Sky Classic mare and is going to offer more value for the top spot than Micromanage.

Entries were draw for Saturday’s $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap (G2) at Saratoga which will be missing Wise Dan, who won the race the previous two years.

Silver Max was installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite and will try to take the field gate to wire. He takes on a couple of solid turf runners in Seek Again, who was third in the Manhattan (G1) last out, and Jack Milton, who was fifth in the Shoemaker Mile (G1) in his last start.

More on that race on Saturday.

Here is today’s second race (the opener is a steeplechase race) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 Clm $32,000 (1:05 ET)
1 Star Grazing 3-5
4 Annie Walker 6-1
5 Devious Maddy 7-2
6 Desert Valentine 5-1

Analysis: Star Grazing came off an 8 1/2 month layoff with a good-looking maiden score last out going six furlongs in the mud and now stretches out to nine furlongs. She faced winners two back in the state bred Gimma and checked in fourth. In her maiden win the runner up Girlabouttown came back to graduate in her next start with an 85 Beyer. Pedigree wise this gal should have no problem handling the extra ground, she is by Sky Mesa out of an Unbridled mare. Hate to take such a short price but she catches a pretty weak group of state breds here.

Annie Walker set the early fractions and faded to finish fifth last out against $50,000 starter allowance foes in her first start against winners. She broke her maiden two back for a $40,000 tag against state breds by 13 1/2 lengths. The runner up Brandini came back to graduate in her next start on July 30 for a $40,000 tag. She owns the edge in early and mid pace numbers and is a danger if she shakes loose early.

Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 1-1 or better.
EX: 1,4 / 1,4,5
TRI: no play

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 OClm $80,000N3X (4:49 ET)
7 Tetradrachm 5-1
9 Reflecting 5-1
1 Ghurair 5-2
5 Lochte 6-1

Analysis: Tetradachm stalked the early pace and faded to finish a distant 12th last out in the Monmouth (G2) which is turning into a key race, producing four next out winners including three next out stakes winners. Two back at Belmont Park this guy ran a decent third, beaten three lengths and that was over ground labeled as good and we very well could see less than firm turf today. Three came out of that race to win next out and the runner up Summer Front ran second in both the Shoemaker (G1) and Eddie Read (G1). The Mott trainee won at this level over the turf here last summer and looking for him to bounce back and it looks as if we are going to get a fair price.

Reflecting stalked the early pace, came with a five wide bid and did not have enough punch left late in a fifth place finish in the Bowling Green 'Cap (G2) but was only beaten two lengths for the top spot. He outran his odds tow back in a third in the Belmont Gold Cup going two miles, missing the place spot in a photo at 26-1. This is just his fourth start of the year and the Shug runner appears to be heading in the right direction form wise.

Wagering
WIN: #7 to win at 7-2 or better.
EX: 7,9 / 1,5,7,9
TRI: 7,9 / 1,5,7,9 / 1,3,5,7,9

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R4: #1 Slim Shadey 8-1
R5: #8 Saratoga Valley 12-1
R6: #3 Coldwater Flat 15-1
R7: #5 No Trespassers 15-1
R8: #9 Casa Creek 10-1
R8: #3 Santa Elf 8-1
R10: #4 Honeychild 10-1

Good luck today!

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 5 RHYME N RHYTHM 5/2

# 1 SEVEN DEADLY SINS 9/2

# 2 HEART OF ROME 8/1

RHYME N RHYTHM looks to be a respectable contender. Last time out, this mare faced a much tougher field. Has been racing in the most competitive company of the group lately. Has run admirably when moving a dirt sprint race. SEVEN DEADLY SINS - Has to be given consideration against this field displaying formidable figures lately and an average Equibase speed fig of 77 under similar conditions. HEART OF ROME - Has garnered sound speed figures in dirt sprint races in the past. Has to be carefully examined based on the formidable speed figure put up in the last outing.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 6 SINGLE LAUNCH 8/5

# 3 ARTAKSEZ 5/2

# 2 HIGHLY CYNICAL 3/1

SINGLE LAUNCH is my choice. This entrant has been consistently racing well recently. This gelding ought to be given a shot just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint events alone. Has put up strong Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races in the past. ARTAKSEZ - This entrant has been consistently running well recently. Shows solid speed figs on average overall when measured up against the rest of this group of horses in this race. HIGHLY CYNICAL - Has very strong early lick and will almost certainly fare solidly versus this group. Looks like a solid candidate for the exotics.

Louisiana Downs - Race #2 - Post: 3:15pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $7,000 Class Rating: 76

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#2 GENUINE GENT (ML=7/2)
#4 SULTAN OF SLAM (ML=9/2)
#6 BOREALIS STAR (ML=8/5)

GENUINE GENT - Last time, was entered in a race at Louisiana Downs in a race with an Equibase class figure of 84. Dropping considerably in class figure this time out puts him in a solid position right here in this race. Ranked the highest in earnings per race entered. Another confirmation that this horse has class. In the last race, finished fifth in the slop at Louisiana Downs. Should do better in this event. SULTAN OF SLAM - Using this jockey/trainer combination is a good move. Zip is always important in horse racing, but the lone speed horse is always dangerous. A big drop down in class rating points from his July 11th race at Lone Star. Based on that data point, I will give this horse the edge. BOREALIS STAR - A big drop down in class figure points from his Jun 28th race at Lone Star. Based on that information, I will give this animal the advantage.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SHADAROVA (ML=5/1), #5 HONOR NAJRAN (ML=5/1), #1A INTELLIGENT LIFE (ML=5/1),

SHADAROVA - Doesn't seem to be in a convenient situation this time. HONOR NAJRAN - This animal hasn't been close in either of his last couple of races around the track. Improbable that the fig he garnered on July 27th will be enough in this race. INTELLIGENT LIFE - Will probably be far back with way too much to do in the stretch. This less than sharp equine hasn't been close to the winner at the finish recently.

#5 SEEKING FAME (ML=3/1)

SEEKING FAME - This colt is in excellent physical condition right now. Ran second last race out and comes back quickly. Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Unquestionably on edge for a good one today. The 48 recent race speed fig looks sound in black and white.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 RULE FIVE (ML=2/1), #2 DOC OF THE COURT (ML=4/1), #7 EL VIEJO VERDE (ML=9/2),

RULE FIVE - Not easy to wager on any thoroughbred in a short distance event at 2/1 when he hasn't shown any successful endeavors in sprints in the last two months. DOC OF THE COURT - This filly hasn't had any positive results in short distance affairs in the last two months. EL VIEJO VERDE - If he goes off anywhere close to the morning line odds of 9/2, I'll have to pass.

14.0 FURLONGS DIRT THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD STAKES $100,000.00 PURSE

#5 MICROMANAGE
#4 DON DULCE
#1 SLIM SHADEY
#2 IRSAAL

Well folks ... this race honors Birdstone, who is probably best known for winning the 2004 Belmont Stakes and has become a successful sire. Owned and bred by Marylou Whitney of Whitney family racing fame, Birdstone won the Champagne Stakes, a leading race for two-year-olds, at Belmont Park in 2003, but was not a factor in the first two Triple Crown races (finishing eighth in the Kentucky Derby and skipping the Preakness Stakes) and was a 36-1 longshot when he upset the overwhelmingly favored Smarty Jones, taking the lead in the final furlong (201 m) in the fastest Belmont since the advent of modern electronic timing (2002 was the first year times were kept to hundredths). His sire Grindstone won the Kentucky Derby in 1996 and was a son of 1990 Derby winner Unbridled. Unbridled was in turn sired by Fappiano, a son of Mr. Prospector, the tail-male ancestor of the vast majority of winners of Triple Crown races in recent years (22 out of the 24 races 1998-2005). Birdstone's victory represented the first in the Belmont for trainer Nick Zito, whose horses had finished second in that classic five times. In the winner's circle after the Belmont Stakes, his owners apologized to the connections of Smarty Jones for winning, as did jockey Edgar Prado. Here in just the 3rd running of this stakes test for 3 year olds and upward .. #5 MICROMANAGE qualifies as a TrackMaster PLUS "PowerPony," takes a class drop (-7), and has produced "POWER RUN PERFORMANCES" in four straight, hitting the board in three, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in his 3rd race back. Jockey Javier Castellano has been in his irons on 5 previous occasions, hitting the board in each, winning twice, en route to a +140% return on investment in the process, and is back this afternoon here at "The Spa" for his 6th ride, gunning for a "Hat Tick Win!" #4 DON DULCE also drops in class (-7), and has produced a quartet of "POWER RUNS" in his last five starts.

# 3 HAPPY BECKY 7/5

OUR HOT MAJORETTE will not be denied the trip to the winner's circle in here. This horse looks very good considering the high class ratings. Don't toss out of any exotics. Could best this grouping, just look at the TrackMaster Speed Rating - 76 - from her last outing. Can't forget based on TrackMaster SRs which have been great (79 avg) most recently. THE SHOW RETURNS - This standardbred could get the triumph here beginning from the Mohawk Racetrack 5 hole. HAPPY BECKY - That 77 speed rating clocked in the last race puts this horse in the mix in this one. Many expert selectors strongly consider this filly on the driver/conditioner ratings alone.

# 8 MONEY ON MY MIND 3/1

# 4 IL MAGO 9/2

# 5 FORT VALLEY AS 5/1

Feel pretty confident putting some green stuff down on MONEY ON MY MIND. Sometimes you just have to go with a feeling, favor this one's chances. Many analyzers lean toward this gelding on the driver/trainer figures alone. Reason to like this gelding as he has in the bike one of the best drivers in win percentage this last month. IL MAGO - Post 4 has been winning at a better than expected percent, suggesting very good probability of success for this race. This harness racer achieved a good TrackMaster Speed Rating last out. Looks in good shape to come right back. FORT VALLEY AS - The 5 hole is on fire here at Harrah's Philadelphia. More wins than normal. Win statistic for this driver-trainer is a sparkling 19 percent - terrific chance.
