Yonkers: Thursday 7/31 Analysis
By Derick Giwner
DRF HARNESS

MEET STATS: 18 - 48 / $88.80 BEST BETS: 3 - 4 / $10.70

Best Bet: B SEVENTEEN (5th)

Spot Play: RIVIERA (1st)

Race 1

(4) RIVIERA drops down and should bring a top effort. (1) SADIES PLACE should push away from the cones; very dangerous. (6) A AND G'S DESIGN comes off a win but draws outside this week.

Race 2

(1) RINGSIDE MUSCLE has proven himself the king of this $20K claiming level and draws the inside to boot. (5) JAILHOUSE FUNK has been racing well and shouldn't miss a beat for the new barn. (3) TROTTIN TROY should be forwardly placed.

Race 3

(3) FAST MOVIN TRAIN gets class and post relief. Don't sell this son of Rock N Roll Heaven short. (5) JULERICA has raced well in both starts and merits a long look as the possible second choice. (4) ARTISTIC MAJOR has yet to lose in three career attempts.

Race 4

(6) SIMON SAID prepped with two decent qualifying miles at the Meadowlands. This field came up light and this son of American Ideal can capitalize. (4) PERFECT BET has faced tougher in every start of his three-race career. (1) HOWDOILIVEWITHYOU has yet to miss the board and did draw pylon position.

Race 5

(2) B SEVENTEEN drops out of the top class of Sire Stakes and should take charge. (5) HEAVEN ROCKS qualified well at Pocono and is worth a long look on the track. (6) MAJOR PLAYER also exits NYSS for tonight's Excelsior condition; could improve.

Race 6

(4) SOUTHWIND MASIMO posted a big mile at Monticello in his career debut; staying here. (5) AMERICAN CROSSROAD arrives for top trainer Alagna off a confidence-building win; very dangerous. (7) MY SPIRIT SOARS has done nothing to make you think he can't win.

Race 7

(6) BET YOU took a shot first over and held for second last time. Gingras chose this one and I expect a victory. (3) MAJOR WAR flashed speed last time and stopped. He should get the lead easily tonight. (1) BORIS broke in his debut; another chance.

Race 8

(1) FREEDOMFORMYSOUL looks like a serious horse and just set a track record at Monticello. (2) LONE SURVIVOR faced a killer at The Meadows most recently. If he sits close he could be dangerous. (5) ROCKNTOUCH comes off a pair of strong efforts.

Race 9

(1) SUCHASENSEOFHUMOR draws best, adds Gingras and faces a suspect group. (7) ULTIMATE G has plenty of early speed; using. (3) BETTING EXCHANGE is a bit of an unkown. He is worth a look on the track.

Race 10

(5) SICILY made a nice middle move but couldn't come close to the top two in his first career start. He adds Sears now and is certainly eligible to improve. (8) IN THE ARSENAL swept through the Sheppard series but drew poorly. (1) MIKADO BLUE CHIP draws well and should get a good piece.

Race 11

(8) BREW MASTER would be a no-go if this was a mile race, but with the added distance into the first turn he should be able to make the top. (2) SISTER GOLA should be a contender on the driver change to Sears, but might be overbet because of that change. (1) WILD SMILE has speed from the inside; using underneath.

Race 12

(1) MC TAYLOR gets class and post relief in her return to the Hilltop. (4) I DO IT MYSELF is hsarp and a must use on most tickets. (6) SIR LEHIGH Z TAM drops down but needs a trip.

Race 2

(6) RUSTIC ROSE finished fourth last week in the OSS Gold Series, drops in class and is the full sister to O'Brien Award winner Riveting Rosie. (8) DEWY TAKE A SELFIE has the speed to offer and will look for a clean trip for MacDonald. (7) IT'S A HOTTY hasn't been worse than third in each of her two starts this season and is a player once again.

Race 3

(7) STAY IN TOUCH comes from the McIntosh barn, is fresh off a win and will offer a low price. (8) PINKY THE INTERN has progressed nicely early in her career and comes from the Dustin Jones stable. (5) OH MY MAGIC draws well for her second career start and was a game second in her career debut.

Race 4

Race 5

(4) SUMMERS JEWEL comes from the Baillargeon barn and hasn't been worse than third in both career starts. (1) DAYLON MERMAID gets the rail, finished third in her career debut and is the full sister to millionaire Daylon Magician. (2) JUDY THE BEAUTY recent won in gate-to-wire fashion for trainer Jones, draws inside and may offer a fair price.

Race 7

(1) MY MINI SNICKERS moves into the Maxwell barn, gets the rail and won last week at ease with a terrific final frame. (4) ELEGANT SERENITY draws much better this week, comes out of the Gold Series and trotted home in :27 3/5 in her career debut. (7) STRIKING IVY comes from the McNair barn, shows versatility and may offer a price.

Race 8

(10) MINESTRE HANOVER will need to overcome post 10, but has won two of his last three, including most recently in this class. (5) HISTORIAN was a game second last week in this class and draws much better. (4) WOGGY ROCKS qualified sharply for trainer Mark Herlihy and has some upside.

Race 9

(1) RITE OUTA THE PARK draws the rail, shows quick gate-speed and should receive an inside trip. (3) DELCREST FLEXYHALL draws inside, gets Jamieson in the bike and should offer a fair price.

(7) BEST RISQUE was a winner last week in this class at 23-1 and is capable of a repeat. (2) PRECIOUS CAMMILL draws inside and has been a threat at this level for many weeks.

KEY STAT: Trencin have kept just three clean sheets in their last 17 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Hull begin their first European adventure with a trip to Slovakia and it is one from which they should be able to claim their first victory. Steve Bruce looks to have moved well in the transfer market and the signings of attacking duo Robert Snodgrass and Tom Ince should give his increasingly dangerous team an extra dimension.

RECOMMENDATION: Hull-Hull double result

KEY STAT: Aberdeen have failed to score in just one of their last 21 away matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Derek McInnes’s side are likely to relish this daunting task and Real Sociedad may not have everything entirely their own way. The Spanish side have another three weeks before their season starts and while the gulf between the teams’ leagues is huge, the Dons can still make it difficult and could find the net.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: St Johnstone have lost two of their last 14 home games

EXPERT VERDICT: St Johnstone should not fear these opponents, who finished third in the Slovakian league last season but scored just 47 goals in their 33 matches and lost more than a third of their games. Saints striker Stevie May was ruthless last term with 20 goals and he could set them on their way to a first-leg advantage.

RECOMMENDATION: S May to score first

KEY STAT: Spartak Moscow finished 12 points ahead of Rubin Kazan last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Rubin Kazan are a solid unit but have been weakened by the recent departures of Jose Salomon Rondon and Yann M’Vila and may struggle to get their campaign off to a winning start. Spartak Moscow have plenty of goals in their side with Yura Movsisyan and Jurado and can force a draw at the Kazan Arena.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: CSKA won 13 of their 15 home games last season

EXPERT VERDICT: Champions CSKA Moscow warmed up for their title defence with a 3-1 Super Cup victory over Rostov last weekend and it is difficult to look past them in their opening fixture. Torpedo Moscow were promoted via a playoff after finishing third in the second tier last season, but their away form was unspectacular and this looks a tough introduction.

RECOMMENDATION: CSKA Moscow

KEY STAT: Zenit recorded nine away victories in the league last season, more than any other team

EXPERT VERDICT: Zenit ended last season in great form to finish just a point behind champions CSKA and the ante-post title favourites can get off to the perfect start by beating newly-promoted Arsenal Tula. Andre Villas-Boas has added Ezequiel Garay to Zenit’s ranks and the team have looked in good heart in pre-season, so the away win looks value.

Belterra Park - Race #5 - Post: 3:26pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $7,500 Class Rating: 58

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#9 PAZOOM (ML=8/1)

PAZOOM - I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run her best in the 3rd or 4th start back. Racing at a similar level as last race on July 13th at Belterra Park. I think Haehn has found a good spot for her, and I like her chances right here. Look for this mare to run lots better in this race. Last event at Belterra Park finishing fifth on a sloppy track is no indication of her true ability.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 WITFRIENDSLIKETHIS (ML=5/2), #4 GIVEM HELL HARRIET (ML=7/2), #5 IN RENNICK'S HONOR (ML=4/1),

WITFRIENDSLIKETHIS - Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some recent success in short distance affairs in order to wager on her. GIVEM HELL HARRIET - Last ran on June 27th at Arlington, finishing eighth. Unlikely to improve off of that try today. This mount likes to be on the board, but doesn't usually get the job done. Don't play in the top spot. This filly probably needs a more conducive pace scenario to make her furious rally. IN RENNICK'S HONOR - No good results for this steed in a sprint race over the last couple of months tells me that this filly is in a formidable spot Hasn't been getting close at all lately. This animal doesn't have a champion's state of mind. Often finishes in the place and show hole.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES
The Walker Group Picks

# 2 DENALI TIZASTAR 7/2

# 7 SOMBRA DE LA LUNA 5/2

# 5 DIXIELAND NELL 10/1

DENALI TIZASTAR is my choice. Has a sharp shot in this race if you like back class. Her chances to prove victorious are much better this time out facing this easier field. SOMBRA DE LA LUNA - The drastic drop in competition can only aid this one this time around. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Camejo have shown solid results as of late. DIXIELAND NELL - The extreme drop in company can only help out this one this time out. This filly looks like a live longshot.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #3 - Post: 6:15pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $25,000 Class Rating: 100

#3 WALKER'S LANDING (ML=6/1)
#6 PYRITE PERSONAL (ML=9/2)
#4 KANAGARO (ML=7/2)
#7 NO MINE (ML=5/1)

WALKER'S LANDING - This jockey and handler have a high winning percentage together. Finished outside the top 3 last out at Presque Isle Downs, but was within 5 lengths of the winner. Opening at 6/1 makes me think he's got a chance. PYRITE PERSONAL - Have to make this gelding a serious competitor; he comes off a good race on July 16th. PP lines show this thoroughbred with 3 improving speed figures. Feliciano should be on a horse ready to go in this event. KANAGARO - Morales's agent must like anytime Ness gives them a mount; win percent together is outstanding. Here is a true horse for the course. Loves the track here at Presque Isle Downs. This horse is at the top in earnings per race entered. He looks sharp in today's race. This horse has increased his speed ratings from a fig of 92 to 94 to 98 in succession. NO MINE - Have to give this gelding a chance. Ran a strong race last time out within the last thirty days.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 VACATION TIME (ML=4/1), #2 TAKIDDM (ML=6/1), #1 TWO TERM LEADER (ML=8/1),

VACATION TIME - This horse hasn't shown very much in the last pair of contests. TAKIDDM - This gelding ********** a speed figure in his last race which probably isn't good enough in today's event. TWO TERM LEADER - Really don't think the last speed rating was attained legitimately. The wet conditions may have lead to such a high rating.

STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Put your money on #3 WALKER'S LANDING on the nose if you can get odds of 6/1 or more

#1 JUST CALL ME AL

#4 COURTSIDE, a 4-1 shot on top here in the "Thursday Opener" folks ... he's posted an "octet" of "Circle Trips" in dirt sprints in his career to date, and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in four of his last five outings, including "POWER RUN WINS" in both his last start, as well as in his 4th race back. Jockey Saul Arias has been in his irons on two previous occasions, posting a win and a place finish, and is back this afternoon for his 3rd ride. #6 MASOCHISTIC, the morning line favorite, qualifies as a TrackMaster PLUS "PowerPony," and comes off a BLISTERING, 14-length, "POWER RUN WIN" to break his maiden in his last start, which was just the 2d race of his young career to date.

# 4 MISS SENTRY 5/2

# 2 CASTANA 8/1

# 1 CAMY AWARD 3/1

MISS SENTRY looks to be a very good contender. In this field, this entrant is prominent in earnings per start in dirt sprint events. Is worth a close look and may be a wager - strong Equibase Speed Figures (58 average) at today's distance and surface as of late. Corbett has been on fire the last month, winning at a nifty 19 percent clip. CASTANA - This pony could upset this field of horses at a nice price. CAMY AWARD - Has solid Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look. Is a definite contender - given the 52 Equibase Speed Figure from her most recent race.

#7 AWESOME VISION
#6 ESCAPEFROMREALITY

Well folks .. from Rick's "Trivia Library" ... The Evan Shipman Stakes for New York-breds is named for the late racing columnist of the Morning Telegraph, who died in 1957. A friend of Ernest Hemingway, Shipman was an aspiring poet in Paris in the 1920's, was wounded in the Spanish Civil War and served in a tank battalion during World War II. Upon his return to the United States he began covering thoroughbred and standardbred racing for the Morning Telegraph. His last column appeared on Kentucky Derby Day in 1957. Here in the 31st running of The Shipman, #8 BIG BUSINESS has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in four of his last five outings, winning three times in this recent streak of racing consistency. Jockey Cornelio Velasquez has been in his irons on four previous occasions, hitting the board in each ride, winning twice, and is back this afternoon here at "The Spa" for his 5th ride, gunning for a "Hat Trick Win!" #1 FOX RULES, an 8-1 shot, has produced "POWER RUNS" in five straight, including a quartet of "POWER RUN WINS!"

At the Gate - Thursday
By Mike Dempsey

We started off the work week with four winners on top on the card at the Spa, and we knocked down the first four exactas, paying $30.80, $69.00, $13.80 and $12.80. However, we had to wait to the nightcap to hit our fifth.

Cadir ($10.80) got up in the finale as my top pick with my second choice Uptown Joe completing a $76.00 exacta and my third choice Same As landed third, the $2 trifecta paying $309.00. A pretty good way to end the day with nailing a trifecta ice cold.

Entries for Saturday’s $1.5 million Whitney Handicap (G1) at Saratoga came out yesterday and Palace Malice was installed as the even money morning line favorite. The Todd Pletcher trainee is perfect in four starts this year and will face eight foes.

The colt only won two of his 10 starts last year, the Belmont Stakes (G1) and Jim Dandy (G2), and has a four-year-old he has not been beaten, taking the Gulfstream Park Handicap (G2), New Orleans Handicap (G2), Westchester (G3) and the Met Mile Handicap (G1).

The colt just looks better with each outing and he showed us last summer he likes the Spa main track. He is going to be tough to beat, but I have a day or so to come up somebody to beat him. It will not be easy.

The race is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

The Whitney will be televised live on Saturday at 5:00 pm ET on NBC along with the $500,000 Test (G1) which is for three-year-old fillies. The race drew a field of 12 with the winner earning an automatic staring spot in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1).

The 11-race card looks outstanding. I will have more on the stakes coming up on Saturday.

Here is today’s second race (the opener is a steeplechase) from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 2 Md Sp Wt (1:00 ET)
1 Updraft 3-1
3 Aggrandizement 8-1
4 None Like Nolan 9-5
2 Warrior's Hero 4-1

Analysis: Updraft stretches out to a route here after checking in a non-threatening sixth in his debut going six furlongs at Belmont Park at 7-2 as part of an entry. The winner The Bib Beast and the fifth place finisher Frame both won next out, the winner taking an Alw-1 race here with a 100 Beyer on July 26. This colt is bred to go long, by Awesome Again out of the multiple stakes winner Ajina ($1.3 million) who has dropped five winners, top earner Jinni ($132,210). The McLaughlin barn is 29% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from sprint to route and has always had strong numbers with second out maidens.

Aggrandizement prompted the early pace while in the three and four path and then tired to finish fourth last out in his first go off a 4 1/2 month layoff. There is not much early speed signed up to go here and he figures to move forward in his second start off the bench. He should be able to handle nine furlongs as he is by Harlan's Holiday out of a Quiet American mare.

Wagering

WIN: #1 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 1,3 / 1,2,3,4
TRI: 1,3 / 1,2,3,4 / 1,2,3,4,6

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 The Evan Shipman (4:42 ET)

7 Awesome Vision 4-1
6 Escapefromreality 3-1
8 Big Business 9-5
4 Sailmate 5-1

Analysis: Awesome Vision just missed by a nose last out at Finger Lakes in the Genesee Valley, beaten by Fox Rules. The five-year-old looks headed in the right direction as he makes his third start of his current form cycle and he is proven at the distance with a couple of wins and a second in four trips at nine furlongs. He has run well over the surface here and missed winning this race last summer in a photo. There is plenty of speed in here that should set things up nicely for him.

Escapefromreality came out on the wrong end of a photo last out with Sailmate facing Alw-2 optional claimers in his first go off a nine month layoff. The gelding won the state bred Albany here last summer at nine furlongs, taking the field gate to wire. He has landed in the exacta in six of his seven career starts. He fits well here with his best while the Schettino barn has been chilly at the meeting (0 for 13 through Monday).

Wagering

WIN: #7 to win at 3-1 or better.
EX: 6,7 / 4,6,7,8
TRI: 6,7 / 4,6,7,8 / 1,4,6,7,8

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga

R1: #2 Makati 8-1
R2: #3 Aggrandizement 8-1
R3: #10 Uncle Southern 8-1
R8: #7 Tiger Bourbon 8-1
R10: #9 Kid Blast 8-1

Good luck today!
