GAME: Chicago Cubs (39-39) at Washington Nationals (47-31)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 29 - 4:05 PM EST
WHERE: Nationals Park, Washington, District of Columbia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Washington Nationals have used dominant starting pitching to claim the past two games against the visiting Chicago Cubs, but the Cubs hope ace Jon Lester will give them the upper hand in the finale of the four-game series Thursday. The Cubs need a strong outing from Lester after seeing their starters roughed up and knocked out relatively early in back-to-back losses.

The Nationals are 4-2 on a seven-game homestand that wraps up Thursday, and they hope Joe Ross can continue the trend of strong starting pitching set by Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg the past two nights. The Cubs’ roster upheaval continued Wednesday, as veteran catcher Miguel Montero was designated for assignment a day after allowing seven stolen bases and criticizing Jake Arrieta’s inability to hold runners in a postgame interview. Chicago called up catcher Victor Caratini, who grounded out as a pinch hitter in his major-league debut Wednesday. The Cubs hope another roster move is not imminent, as reigning NL MVP Kris Bryant left Wednesday’s game with a “mild to moderate” ankle sprain and will be unavailable Thursday, further decimating the lineup with starters Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist on the disabled list.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (5-4, 3.83 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Joe Ross (4-3, 5.40)

Lester has posted a season-high three straight quality starts, going 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA over that stretch. The 33-year-old pitched seven innings in a win at Miami on Saturday, allowing three runs and four hits in his second straight road win after going 0-2 in his first five road outings. Lester is 2-1 with a 2.77 ERA in four career starts against the Nationals.

Ross has endured an up-and-down season, but he has put together two straight quality starts and is coming off one of his best outings of the year. The 24-year-old limited Cincinnati to one run and six hits over seven innings in a win Saturday. Ross is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts against the Cubs.

WALK-OFFS

1. Nationals 2B Daniel Murphy is 16-for-47 with three homers and 12 RBIs during a 12-game hitting streak.

2. Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo’s home run Wednesday was his 27th in the month of June over the past four seasons, the most in the NL during June over that stretch.

3. Washington SS Trea Turner swiped his major league-leading 33rd stolen base Wednesday, giving him more stolen bases than 10 teams.

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (41-39) at Pittsburgh Pirates (36-42)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 29 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Pittsburgh Pirates are hanging around in the wide-open National League Central race despite being under .500 since mid-April, but can earn their second straight series victory when they host the Tampa Bay Rays in the rubber match of a three-game set Thursday. The Pirates (36-42), who are four games out of first place in the division, recorded four two-out RBIs to even the series with a 6-2 victory on Wednesday night.

Josh Bell snapped out of a mini-slump with a solo homer and scored twice Wednesday for Pittsburgh, which went 0-1-1 in its previous two series against division foes Milwaukee and St. Louis. Jameson Taillon makes his fourth start since returning from testicular cancer surgery (May 8) for the Pirates and will face fellow right-hander Chris Archer, who is second in the American League with 126 strikeouts in 104 1/3 innings. The Rays have dropped three of their last four and left 11 runners on base in Wednesday’s loss, but Corey Dickerson continues to shine with three straight two-hit games to increase his major league-best total to 33 multi-hit contests. Tampa Bay’s Logan Morrison is still one shy of his career high of 23 homers (2011), but has hit safely in nine consecutive games.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), ROOT Pittsburgh

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Chris Archer (6-4, 3.88 ERA) vs. Pirates RH Jameson Taillon (3-2, 3.33)

Archer struck out a season-low four batters and yielded five runs over six innings last time out, but earned his second straight victory in a 15-5 rout. The 28-year-old North Carolina native’s ERA has risen each month this season, but he has completed at least six innings in 11 of his last 12 starts. Archer allowed five runs in seven innings of loss in his only start against the Pirates and is 5-6 with a 2.75 ERA in 14 interleague games.

Taillon is 1-1 in three games since returning from the disabled list, permitting six runs in 16 innings combined while striking out 16 and giving up just one homer. The 25-year-old former second-overall pick in 2010, who has allowed just five blasts in 51 1/3 innings, is 1-1 with a 4.22 ERA at home while going 2-1 with a 2.70 mark on the road. Taillon faces Tampa Bay for the first time and is 1-1 with a 2.39 ERA in four career interleague contests.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay will activate RHP Brad Boxberger (back) from the disabled list Thursday after designating RHP Danny Farquhar for assignment.

2. Pittsburgh CF Andrew McCutchen was 0-for-2 with two runs scored Wednesday and is batting .376 with six homers and 22 RBIs in June.

3. Rays SS Adeiny Hechavarria is 3-for-6 with a walk and two RBIs in his first two games since being acquired from Miami for two minor leaguers.

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (38-39) at Toronto Blue Jays (37-40)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 29 - 7:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista may be in the midst of a banner week, however the 36-year-old has struggled mightily throughout his career against Ubaldo Jimenez. After homering for the second time in three games, Bautista carries a six-game hitting streak into Thursday's finale of the three-game series against Jimenez and the visiting Baltimore Orioles.

Bautista is 11-for-26 with six RBIs and five runs scored during his hit streak, but is an astounding 3-for-38 with 11 strikeouts in his career versus Jimenez. Justin Smoak, who is batting a robust .349 this month, launched his career-high 21st homer in Wednesday's 4-0 victory over Baltimore, but his 2-for-21 performance against Jimenez leaves plenty to be desired. While the American League East cellar-dwelling Blue Jays posted just their third win in 11 encounters versus the Orioles, the latter saw its three-game winning streak come to a halt. Trey Mancini, who is 11-for-25 against Toronto this season, has hit safely in eight straight games and 17 of his last 18 overall.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Ubaldo Jimenez (2-3, 7.26 ERA) vs. Blue Jays LH J.A. Happ (2-4, 3.83)

Jimenez was shellacked for a season-high nine runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss in Friday's 15-5 setback at Tampa Bay. The 33-year-old Dominican also surrendered two homers and walked four batters for the second straight outing after being taken deep just once and issuing one free pass in his previous four outings. Jimenez traditionally has pitched well versus Toronto, posting a 7-5 career mark in 18 career appearances while flustering Josh Donaldson (5-for-28) among others.

Happ turned in his third straight strong start on Friday by allowing one run on four hits over 6 2/3 innings of a no-decision at Kansas City. The 34-year-old owns a 2-0 mark with a 1.86 ERA in his last three outings after yielding four runs on 18 hits while striking out 22 in 19 1/3 frames. Happ dropped both encounters versus Baltimore this season, surrendering two homers and three runs total in a 3-1 setback on April 5 before working just 4 1/3 frames 11 days later in an 11-4 loss.

WALK-OFFS

1. Baltimore CF Adam Jones is 1-for-11 with five strikeouts in his last three contests on the heels of a seven-game hitting streak.

2. Toronto LF Steve Pearce is 4-for-5 in the series against his former team and is 13-for-26 with six runs scored in his last nine contests.

3. Orioles 3B Manny Machado is 0-for-7 in the series and 6-for-40 versus the Blue Jays this season.

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (41-39) at Cincinnati Reds (33-44)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 29 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Scooter Gennett has sweetened the pot by pushing his hitting streak to seven games against the team that waived him in spring training. The 27-year-old Gennett aims to send the cellar-dwelling Cincinnati Reds to a three-game home series sweep of the National League Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday at Great American Ball Park.

Gennett launched a two-run homer in Wednesday's 4-3 victory to improve to 12-for-30 with three blasts, five RBIs and 10 runs scored during his hitting streak. Adam Duvall went deep for the second straight contest to highlight his third consecutive two-RBI performance heading into a matchup versus Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson, against whom he is 6-for-12 in his career. While Cincinnati has won three of four after a dismal 1-13 stretch, Milwaukee has dropped four of five on its six-game road trip. Ryan Braun tied Lance Berkman for the most homers (23) by a visiting player at Great American Ball Park and looks to tee off against Homer Bailey, against whom he is 12-for-37 with two blasts.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Ohio (Cincinnati)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Jimmy Nelson (5-4, 3.50 ERA) vs. Reds RH Homer Bailey (0-1, 43.20)

Nelson sustained his first loss in a month on Friday after allowing four runs in five innings of a 5-4 setback at Atlanta. The 28-year-old fanned eight batters in that contest and 49 over his last six outings. Nelson improved to 4-3 in his career versus Cincinnati after permitting one run in seven innings in a 5-1 triumph on April 13.

Bailey's season debut was an unmitigated disaster, as the 31-year-old yielded eight runs on six hits with three walks in 1 2/3 innings at Washington. "I had no excuses. I just didn't pitch well. That's all I can say," Bailey said after the 18-3 shellacking. Bailey will look to rebound against Milwaukee, against which he is 5-8 with a 4.64 ERA in 22 career appearances.

WALK-OFFS

1. Milwaukee 3B Travis Shaw has homered in three straight games, going 4-for-9 with six RBIs and five runs scored.

2. Cincinnati 3B Eugenio Suarez is 1-for-18 in his last seven outings.

3. Brewers 1B Eric Thames is 0-for-8 with five strikeouts in the series and 15-for-92 with 39 strikeouts in June.

GAME: Minnesota Twins (40-36) at Boston Red Sox (43-35)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 29 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

David Price has allowed fewer than three runs in only one of his six starts as he prepares to take the mound for the Boston Red Sox on Thursday in the finale of their four-game set versus the visiting Minnesota Twins. Max Kepler hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs in Wednesday's 5-2 win by Minnesota, which is seeking a split of the series.

Price has seen plenty of the Twins over the years, posting a 9-3 record and 2.43 ERA in 16 appearances (15 starts) against them overall and a 4-0 mark with a 1.16 ERA over four starts in 2015. Boston went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position Wednesday and fell to 3-3 on its seven-game homestand but will follow Thursday's contest by playing its next 10 leading into the All-Star break on the road. Opposing Price will be Kyle Gibson, who owns a 1-1 record and 2.61 ERA in three career starts against the Red Sox. Joe Mauer recorded a pair of hits on Wednesday and is 6-for-18 against Boston this season.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ESPN, FSN North (Minnesota), NESN (Boston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Twins RH Kyle Gibson (4-5, 6.23 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH David Price (2-2, 4.76)

Gibson lasted only 4 2/3 innings last time out in his second straight start versus Cleveland, giving up one run on four hits and four walks. He yielded three runs over six frames against the Indians in his previous turn but continues to struggle with his control, walking at least three in seven of his last nine outings. Dustin Pedroia is hitless in nine at-bats against Gibson.

Price notched his third quality start by allowing three runs - two earned - over six innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Angels, an outing he exited due to a cracked nail on the middle finger of his left hand. It was the first start in which Price did not surrender a homer after serving up 30 last year. Mauer and Brian Dozier are a combined 12-for-67 against Price.

WALK-OFFS

1. Twins RHP Brandon Kintzler notched his 21st save on Wednesday, tying Boston's Craig Kimbrel for the American League lead.

2. Pedroia has matched his own franchise record for a second baseman by not committing an error in his last 98 games.

3. The Twins placed LHP Craig Breslow (rib cage) on the disabled list and activated RHP Phil Hughes from the DL.

GAME: New York Mets (35-42) at Miami Marlins (35-41)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 29 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Curtis Granderson is on a home run binge and his New York Mets have a chance for a second straight series win when they finish a three-game set at the Miami Marlins on Thursday. Granderson's fifth home run in seven games was part of the Mets' 8-0 victory in Wednesday's middle game of the series and gave the club four wins in the past five contests.

It also stretched Granderson's hitting streak to seven games (.400) and helped New York post at least eight runs for the third time during the 4-1 surge. Steven Matz shined on the mound for the Mets on Wednesday and their battered rotation hopes to get another big effort from Seth Lugo, who will be making his fourth start of the year in the finale. The Marlins managed seven hits - all singles - in the 8-0 defeat as they were shut out for the third time this year. Jose Urena, who has let up a run in 12 innings over his last two home starts, gets the nod for Miami on Thursday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Seth Lugo (2-1, 3.72 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Jose Urena (6-2, 3.33)

Lugo has allowed four runs in back-to-back starts after a stellar season debut in which he limited Atlanta to a run in seven innings. He issued three walks against two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings at San Francisco his last time out while improving to 5-1 in his career on the road. The 27-year-old is 2-0 with a 3.55 ERA in three games (two starts) in his career against the Marlins.

Urena has won five straight decisions and blanked the Chicago Cubs over six innings in his previous turn. The Dominican Republic native held the Mets to one hit in six scoreless frames in his first start of the year May 7. He is 2-2 with a 3.30 ERA in his career against New York, holding the Mets to a .204 average in 30 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets OF Michael Conforto (wrist) missed his second straight game Wednesday.

2. Marlins LF Marcell Ozuna is batting .396 in 12 games against New York this year.

3. Mets IF Asdrubal Cabrera is 10-for-21 since coming off the disabled list last week but he departed Wednesday's game with leg cramps.

GAME: New York Yankees (42-34) at Chicago White Sox (33-44)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 29 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Yankees have a chance to end a string of four straight series losses when they close out a four-game set against the host Chicago White Sox on Thursday. Aaron Judge belted his major league-leading 27th homer to cap a five-run inning in Wednesday's 12-3 romp as New York won for only the four time in 15 games.

Judge has registered five homers and 13 RBIs over his last 12 contests while extending his on-base streak to 30 games for the Yankees, who placed Matt Holliday (viral infection) on the disabled list one day after second baseman Starlin Castro (hamstring) went on the shelf. Miguel Andujar was promoted to take Holliday's roster spot and went 3-for-4 with four RBIs in his splashy major-league debut, including a two-run single in his first at-bat. Chicago's Melky Cabrera recorded two hits and two RBIs in Wednesday's drubbing, improving to 30-for-85 over his last 15 games. The White Sox have managed to produce only four runs against New York's starting pitching in the series and fell to an American League-worst 10-28 when the opposition scores first.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, WPIX (New York), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Luis Cessa (0-2, 6.57 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (1-1, 4.26)

Cessa took the loss against Texas last time out, giving up three runs and three hits over five innings, although he did record a career high with eight strikeouts. He made his first start of the season on June 18, allowing four runs over four frames in a loss at Oakland. Cessa faced the White Sox in relief last year and was touched for three runs - two earned - and five hits in two innings.

Shields was hammered in his second start since returning from a two-month stint on the disabled list, surrendering six runs over three-plus innings in a loss versus Oakland. The 35-year-old worked 5 2/3 frames at Toronto on June 18, giving up three runs after permitting one in each of his first three turns. Shields has suffered more losses against the Yankees (11-16) than any other team in the majors.

WALK-OFFS

1. Andujar joined Roy Weatherly (1936) as the only players in history with at least four RBIs, three hits and a stolen base in his major-league debut.

2. White Sox RF Avisail Garcia is hitless in 19 at-bats over his last five games.

3. Judge is two shy of the franchise's rookie record for homers set by Joe DiMaggio in 1936.

GAME: Atlanta Braves (37-40) at San Diego Padres (32-46)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 29 - 9:10 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Diego Padres attempt to win back-to-back series for the first time since early April when they host the Atlanta Braves on Thursday for the rubber match of their three-game set. San Diego, which began its nine-game homestand by taking two of three from Detroit, hasn't captured two straight series since going 2-1 against both San Francisco and Colorado from April 7-12.

The Padres were blanked by the Braves in the series opener but scored two runs in three of the first four innings en route to a 7-4 triumph on Wednesday. Carlos Asuaje is making the most of his second stint with the team this season, as the 25-year-old Venezuelan is 7-for-14 over his last four games after recording his third multi-hit performance (3-for-4) in that span in the victory. Atlanta is seeking its fifth straight series win since dropping three of four at home to the New York Mets from June 9-11. Ender Inciarte strives to remain hot Thursday as he carries a 10-game hitting streak into the series finale.

TV: 9:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Jaime Garcia (2-5, 4.03 ERA) vs. Padres RH Dinelson Lamet (2-2, 6.60)

Garcia is winless in his last five starts and has posted just one victory over nine outings since a triumph at Milwaukee on April 29. The 30-year-old Mexican has been fortunate of late, as he has escaped with no-decisions in his last two turns despite surrendering six runs and seven hits against both Miami on June 17 (5 2/3 innings) and San Francisco last Thursday (4 1/3). Garcia is 2-1 with one shutout and a 2.57 ERA in seven career starts versus San Diego, including a no-decision on April 17 in which he gave up two runs over 6 1/3 innings.

Since winning his first two major-league starts in May, Lamet has gone 0-2 over his last four turns. The 24-year-old Dominican was pounded in two straight outings but has pitched better of late, giving up three runs over six frames in no-decisions at Milwaukee on June 17 and against Detroit on Saturday. Lamet, who registered a career-high 12 strikeouts versus the Brewers, kept the ball in the park against the Tigers for the first time in the majors.

WALK-OFFS

1. Braves C Tyler Flowers left Wednesday's contest in the sixth inning with a forearm injury after being hit by a pitch and is day-to-day.

2. San Diego OF Jose Pirela has been held without a hit in only five of his last 18 games after going 0-for-4 on Wednesday.

3. Atlanta 2B Brandon Phillips, who turned 36 years old on Wednesday, went 1-for-4 to extend his streak to 11 consecutive birthdays with a hit.

DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 29 - 10:07 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Clayton Kershaw looks to become the first 12-game winner in the majors this season when the Los Angeles Dodgers complete a stretch of four consecutive games against the Los Angeles Angels when they pay them a visit on Thursday. The Dodgers' ace has won seven consecutive decisions and is limiting opponents to a .207 batting average entering the series finale.

Kershaw is third in the majors in ERA (2.47) and WHIP (0.92) and one of the favorites - along with Washington's Max Scherzer - to be the National League's starting pitcher in next month's All-Star Game. He will be aiming to help the Dodgers earn a split of the four Freeway Series games as well as protecting the club's 1 1/2-game lead over Arizona in the NL West. Andrelton Simmons hit a two-run homer in Wednesday's 3-2 victory, a sixth-inning blast that was the Angels' lone hit in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position. Angels leadoff hitter Cameron Maybin is just 3-for-29 over his last seven games while veteran Albert Pujols struck out in three of his four at-bats on Wednesday as hit kkto drop to .200 in 100 June at-bats.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, MLB Network, SportsNet LA (Dodgers), FSN West (Angels)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (11-2, 2.47 ERA) vs. Angels RH JC Ramirez (7-5, 4.38)

Kershaw has won four straight starts during the 7-0 stretch and the Dodgers have prevailed in his last 10 since losing to San Francisco on May 1. The 29-year-old defeated Colorado in his last outing as he gave up four hits over six scoreless innings. Kershaw is 5-2 with a 2.68 ERA in nine career starts against the Angels and has dominated Maybin (3-for-27) while struggling with Pujols (11-for-29).

Ramirez defeated Boston in his last turn, when he allowed one run and four hits over six innings. The 28-year-old is 1-3 with a 5.10 ERA in eight appearances (seven starts) at Angel Stadium this season. Ramirez has retired all 11 Dodgers he has faced in two career relief appearances spanning 3 2/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers SS Corey Seager (hamstring) has missed the last five games but may be cleared to start Thursday's contest.

2. Angels CF Mike Trout (thumb) may begin taking batting practice later this week and could start a rehab assignment in the latter part of next week.

3. Dodgers rookie 1B/LF Cody Bellinger is just 1-for-9 with six strikeouts in the series.
