GAME: Boston Red Sox (37-28) at Philadelphia Phillies (21-43)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 15 - 7:05 PM EST
WHERE: Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Boston Red Sox have been heating up like the soon-to-be summer temperatures with wins in 15 of their last 22 contests, highlighted by two extra-inning victories over the Philadelphia Phillies. The visiting Red Sox look to continue their good fortune against the free-falling Phillies on Wednesday when the four-game, home-and-home interleague series shifts to Citizens Bank Park.

Andrew Benintendi capped his second straight three-hit performance with an RBI single in Tuesday's 4-3 victory in 12 innings, improving to 8-for-18 with one homer and seven RBIs during his four-game hitting streak. Dustin Pedroia, who had an RBI single in the 11th inning of Monday's 6-5 win, has recorded four consecutive multi-hit efforts and collected four RBIs and five runs scored in that stretch. Philadelphia saw its season-high losing skid extend to seven games with Tuesday's loss despite a four-hit performance for Maikel Franco, who is 7-for-13 with an RBI during his three-game hitting streak on the heels of going 2-for-24 in his previous six contests. Tommy Joseph has been far more consistent for the Phillies by batting 14-for-39 with seven RBIs during his nine-game hitting streak.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), CSN Philadelphia

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Brian Johnson (2-0, 3.44 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Jeremy Hellickson (5-4, 4.50)

Johnson, who will make his fifth career start and first versus a National League foe, received a no-decision on Friday after allowing three runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings against Detroit. The 26-year-old was taken deep on two occasions versus the Tigers for the second time in his three outings, although Johnson insists he is focused on the here and now as opposed to the past. "What got me in trouble last year was overthinking things, and I think with the three starts and now that I'm going (Wednesday), I just go day to day," Johnson told MLB.com.

Hellickson fell to 1-4 with a 6.43 ERA in his last eight starts after allowing three runs on 10 hits in six innings of Friday's 3-2 setback at St. Louis. The 30-year-old continues to be plagued by the longball, as he was taken deep for the fourth straight outing against the Cardinals and has surrendered 14 homers in 13 starts. Hellickson owns a 4-3 mark with a 4.41 ERA in 15 career appearances versus the Red Sox, although he hasn't faced them since he pitched for Tampa Bay in 2014.

WALK-OFFS

1. Boston 1B Mitch Moreland has eight RBIs and as many runs scored during his eight-game hitting streak.

2. Philadelphia SS Freddy Galvis is 0-for-10 with two strikeouts in the series.

3. Red Sox 1B coach Ruben Amaro Jr. returns to Philadelphia after holding the same position with the Phillies from 2009-15.

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (35-33) at Detroit Tigers (30-34)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 15 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Detroit Tigers are sinking toward the bottom of the American League Central standings and look to begin turning things around when they send ace Justin Verlander to the mound Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays to open a four-game set. The Tigers have allowed 39 runs while losing five of their last six, capped by a 2-1 loss to Arizona on Wednesday night.

Alex Avila knocked in the only run for Detroit last time out and Nicholas Castellanos went 0-for-4 after hitting safely in 11 straight as the Tigers left seven on base to match a season-worst of four games under .500 at 30-34. Verlander hopes to put an end to a four-game winless stretch and the veteran will oppose Tampa Bay’s Alex Cobb, who makes the 100th start of his career. The Rays could not finish a quick two-game sweep at Toronto on Wednesday after coughing up a 3-1 lead, rallying from three down to tie it before allowing a run in the eighth for a 7-6 loss - only their second in the last eight contests. Corey Dickerson continues to shine after going 6-for-12 with a homer and five RBIs the last three games for Tampa Bay, which swept Detroit in three contests at home April 18-20 after going 1-6 versus the Tigers in 2016.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Alex Cobb (5-5, 4.29 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (4-4, 4.68)

Cobb rebounded from his worst start of the season - when he allowed nine runs in five innings at Seattle - by holding Oakland to one tally over six frames in a victory Friday. The 29-year-old Boston native struck out five and gave up four hits in that outing and is one shy of 500 strikeouts in 99 major-league contests. Avila is 4-for-11 versus Cobb, who is 2-1 with a 2.35 ERA in seven career games against the Tigers.

Verlander allowed 12 runs on 26 hits over 19 2/3 innings in his past four starts while posting a loss and three no-decisions, including last time out against Boston when he yielded three tallies in five frames. The 34-year-old Virginia native has struggled with control while accumulating 37 walks in 75 innings - four last Saturday. Derek Norris is 3-for-7 against Verlander, who is 8-3 with a 3.34 ERA in 15 games versus Tampa Bay.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria is 9-for-21 with four extra-base hits and six RBIs during a five-game hitting streak.

2. Detroit 1B Miguel Cabrera needs one homer to tie Carl Yastrzemski (452) for 37th on major league baseball’s all-time list.

3. Rays SS Tim Beckham (knee) has missed the last two games, but is expected to play at some point in this series.

GAME: Washington Nationals (39-26) at New York Mets (30-34)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 15 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

If the New York Mets are going to have a chance to chase down the Washington Nationals in the National League East, they’ll need to make up ground in head-to-head competition. The Mets get a chance to do so when they host the Nationals for a four-game series beginning Thursday.

The timing is right for the Mets, who have won five of their last six games and catch Washington in its roughest patch of the season thus far. The Nationals have lost five of their last six contests after a 13-2 drubbing in the rubber match of a three-game series against visiting Atlanta on Wednesday. Washington hopes for a quick rebound behind left-hander Gio Gonzalez, who is 9-1 with a 1.62 ERA in 14 starts at Citi Field. Gonzalez has a tough task facing a Mets lineup that has belted 26 home runs in 13 games this month, including eight games with at least two blasts.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, MASN (Washington), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals LH Gio Gonzalez (5-1, 2.91 ERA) vs. Mets RH Robert Gsellman (5-3, 4.95)

Gonzalez is well on his way to his eighth straight season with double-digit wins and has posted three straight quality starts. The 31-year-old didn’t get a decision last time out despite holding Texas to one run and three hits over six innings with a season-high nine strikeouts. Gonzalez has enjoyed pitching against the Mets, going 12-5 with a 2.96 ERA in 21 meetings.

Gsellman has won three straight starts and has posted a 2.16 ERA in four outings since rejoining the rotation on May 24. The 23-year-old threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings to beat Atlanta last time out, allowing only three hits and two walks. Gsellman was terrific in two starts against the Nationals last season, giving up one run and 11 hits over 11 2/3 innings in a win and a no-decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. Nationals RF Bryce Harper is 9-for-29 with a home run during a seven-game hitting streak but has lowered his season average one point to .315 over that stretch.

2. Mets OF Juan Lagares is 15-for-38 with five extra-base hits against Gonzalez, but the rest of New York’s active roster is a combined 34-for-170 against the left-hander.

3. Washington 2B Daniel Murphy is batting .384 with seven doubles and eight home runs in 25 games against his former team.

GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (35-32) at St. Louis Cardinals (30-34)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 15 - 7:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Milwaukee Brewers take aim at winning the series when they visit the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday for the finale of their four-game set. Milwaukee scored 15 runs in winning the last two contests after being blanked in the opener.

The Brewers are 18-13 on the road after surviving two rain delays during Wednesday's 7-6 victory. Eric Thames went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs - an encouraging sign after he began the month in a 4-for-37 funk. St. Louis won four consecutive games prior to the back-to-back defeats that knocked it 3 1/2 games behind first-place Milwaukee in the National League Central. Matt Carpenter has gone 5-for-8 over his last two games and is a scorching 13-for-31 with three homers and five doubles during his eight-game hitting streak.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers RH Zach Davies (7-3, 4.74 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (3-3, 4.50)

Davies has won two straight starts and seven of his last eight decisions after losing his first two outings of the season. The 24-year-old defeated Arizona in his last turn as he gave up four runs - three earned - and four hits in five innings. Davies is 2-0 with a 2.81 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in five career starts against the Cardinals - including 1-0 with a 5.23 ERA in two outings this year - but has been pounded by Jedd Gyorko (9-for-13, one homer) and the red-hot Carpenter (6-for-15, two homers).

Wacha gave up two runs and five hits in six innings while defeating Philadelphia in his last turn for his first victory since April 19. The 25-year-old has pitched well at home, going 3-1 with a 2.95 ERA in seven starts. Wacha is 4-0 with a 4.38 ERA in eight career appearances (seven starts) against Milwaukee after giving up four runs over six frames in a no-decision on May 1.

WALK-OFFS

1. Brewers INF Eric Sogard is 4-for-7 in the series and has recorded six multi-hit performances this month.

2. St. Louis 2B Kolten Wong (forearm) departed Wednesday's game and his availability for the finale is uncertain.

3. Milwaukee activated RHP Matt Garza (chest) from the disabled list - he gave up four runs in five innings on Wednesday - and designated struggling RHP Neftali Feliz (6.00 ERA) for assignment.

GAME: San Francisco Giants (26-41) at Colorado Rockies (42-26)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 15 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

A strong offensive performance in their last outing allowed the Colorado Rockies to avoid being swept for the first time this season. Winners of eight of their last 11, the Rockies look to continue to flex their muscles against the visiting San Francisco Giants on Thursday when the National League West rivals play the opener of a four-game series at Coors Field.

Trevor Story drove in a run for the third straight game in Wednesday's 5-1 victory over Pittsburgh and aims to continue his offensive surge versus the Giants, against whom he has three homers, nine RBIs and six runs scored this season. Colorado has won six of seven encounters with San Francisco, including a sweep from April 21-23 in which the Rockies outscored their rivals 26-8. While Colorado is one of baseball's feel-good stories, the Giants routinely have come up small this season and rest in the cellar of the division after losing 11 of their last 15 games. "The way we're swinging, it's a steep climb," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy told reporters after Wednesday's 7-2 loss to Kansas City. "This is humbling to go through something like this. It's a tough time for these fellows."

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Matt Moore (2-7, 5.28 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Jeff Hoffman (4-0, 2.33)

Moore didn't fare well against Colorado in a pair of starts this season, losing both decisions after permitting five runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 5-0 setback on April 15 before being tagged for six runs on nine hits - including three homers - in a 12-3 rout seven days later. The 27-year-old fell to 0-3 in his last five starts on Friday after allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings of a 4-0 setback versus Minnesota. Moore looks to alter his fortunes on the road, where he owns an 0-4 mark with a gaudy 7.94 ERA in seven starts.

A winner of four consecutive starts, Hoffman allowed just one run for the third straight outing and fourth in five trips to the mound on Saturday in a 9-1 victory against the Chicago Cubs. "It was awesome. Facing a great lineup and to be able to go out there and do what I did and execute - and the team to play the way it did - was special," the 24-year-old rookie told reporters. Hoffman recorded eight strikeouts versus the Cubs and has fanned 34 against just three walks in 27 innings this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Colorado manager Bud Black told reporters that struggling OF Carlos Gonzalez will not start for the second straight game on Thursday, with the three-time All-Star mired in an 0-for-24 stretch over his previous seven contests.

2. San Francisco 3B-OF Eduardo Nunez has hit safely in 26 of his last 28 games.

3. Giants C Buster Posey has 21 hits in his last 14 contests.

GAME: New York Yankees (38-25) at Oakland Athletics (27-38)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 15 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The New York Yankees hope to avoid their first three-game losing streak in nearly four weeks when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Thursday for the opener of a four-game series. New York began its seven-game California trip with its fifth straight win before dropping the final two contests against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Yankees, who haven't lost three in a row since May 18-20, owned a four-run lead after their first turn at-bat Wednesday - thanks in part to Gary Sanchez's fifth homer in six games - but went on to suffer a 7-5 loss. Oakland is kicking off an eight-game homestand after concluding a 1-5 road trip Wednesday with an 11-6 setback at Miami. The Athletics squandered an early four-run lead and went on to suffer their sixth loss in seven games overall. Ryon Healy was one of the team's few bright spots on the trek, going 8-for-23 with two homers and six RBIs over the final five contests.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, YES (New York), NBCSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH Jordan Montgomery (4-4, 3.55 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Sonny Gray (2-2, 4.37)

Montgomery is coming off back-to-back victories during which he allowed two runs and eight hits over 13 innings. The 24-year-old rookie from South Carolina has given up only four earned runs over his last four outings, recording 18 strikeouts while issuing five walks in 24 frames, but is just 2-1 in that span. Montgomery, who lost two straight turns on the road before tossing six scoreless innings at Toronto on June 3, never has faced Oakland.

Gray's winless streak reached three starts Saturday, when he yielded five runs - two earned - and nine hits in six innings of a no-decision at Tampa Bay. The 27-year-old native of Tennessee fanned 10 in the outing, marking the second time this season he has hit double digits in strikeouts and giving him 47 in 47 1/3 frames this year. Gray is 1-2 with a 4.44 ERA in four career starts against New York.

WALK-OFFS

1. Yankees LHP CC Sabathia has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring and is expected to land on the disabled list.

2. Oakland optioned 1B/OF Matt Olson to Triple-A Nashville to make room for RHP Daniel Gossett, who was tagged for seven runs over 3 1/3 innings in his major-league debut on Wednesday after having his contract purchased.

3. New York recalled Ronald Herrera from Double-A Trenton and optioned fellow RHP Ben Heller to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

GAME: Kansas City Royals (30-34) at Los Angeles Angels (35-34)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 15 - 10:07 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Kansas City Royals have tuned up their sagging offense and look to post a season-best fifth straight victory when they open a four-game series against the host Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. Kansas City, which has scored the fewest runs (253) in the American League, has racked up 35 during its four-game winning streak.

Mike Moustakas is leading the revival with a .391 batting average this month and slugged his fifth homer of June in Wednesday's 7-2 victory over San Francisco. "We're trending in the right direction," Moustakas told reporters after the victory. "We've been playing great baseball on this road trip, and if we keep this going, we're going to be in a good spot after the end of this month." The Angels have won five of their last seven games after Andrelton Simmons hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning of Wednesday's 7-5 victory over the New York Yankees. Los Angeles is hanging tough without reigning American League MVP Mike Trout, going 9-7 in his absence to reside in second place in the AL West.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals LH Matt Strahm (1-3, 4.50 ERA) vs. Angels RH Ricky Nolasco (2-7, 4.81)

Strahm will make his first major-league start after 41 relief appearances over the past two seasons. The 2012 21st-round draft pick is holding opponents to a .178 batting average this season but has issued 18 walks in just 22 innings. Strahm, who never has faced the Angels, has recorded 56 strikeouts in 44 big-league frames.

Nolasco has dropped five consecutive starts - matching the longest skid of his career - and is winless in his last nine dating back to a victory over Oakland on April 27. The 34-year-old lost to Houston in his last turn despite giving up two runs and eight hits over seven innings. Nolasco is 2-4 with a 4.80 ERA in eight career starts against the Royals and has struggled with Salvador Perez (8-for-21, one homer) and Alcides Escobar (8-for-24).

WALK-OFFS

1. The Royals allowed just three runs while sweeping a three-game home series from the Angels in mid-April.

2. Los Angeles DH Albert Pujols is batting just .163 in June, even after recording his first multi-hit performance of the month on Wednesday.

3. OF Jorge Bonifacio drove in six of Kansas City's 15 runs in a two-game sweep of the Giants.

MLB | Giants vs Rockies
Play on: Rockies -155 at betonline

1* Bonus Play Rockies. I think the home side is worth the price of admission in this spot. Matt Moore has looked better for the Giants of late, but he’s been shaky at best overall with a 2-7, 5.28 ERA record. Moore most recently gave up four runs off seven hits over six innings in a loss to the Twins on Friday (he’s also been at his worst on the road, going 0-4 with a 7.94 ERA). Jeff Hoffman (4-0, 2.33) has a 0.74 WHIP along with 34 strikeouts to just three walks over his 27 innings of work this year for Colorado. This is a pitching matchup which definitely favors the Rockies. But also note that the Giants themsevles have struggled in this spot all year, going just 16-26 (-12.5 units) against right-handed starters, while Colorado is 12-8 (+7.5 units) against southpaws. Consider the home side in this matchup.
