My free winner for Thanksgiving is going to be in College Basketball, where I'm playing the Fresno State Bulldogs plus the points against the Northwestern Wildcats.
The Bulldogs arrive in Fullerton with a 1-1 mark, after losing to Texas Christian, but hungry to make a statement with a rebound performance. And I'm banking on the perimeter game and a tenacious defense to get us the money against the underassuming Wildcats.
Let's start Fresno State's New Williams, who has knocked down nine of 16 shots from field, including 7 of 12 (58.3 percent) from beyond the 3-point stripe. He's also disciplined, as the transfer guard from Auburn has committed just two turnovers.
At the other end, Williams has been relentless on defense, snatching six steals, including four that were turned into points by a teammate.
In the loss to TCU, the Bulldogs had their chances to knock off the 21st-ranked team in the nation, but wilted late in a 77-69 setback. It was the team's first true road game, and after falling behind by double digits, the motivation was gone. The team simply didn't play as well defensively, and the Frogs took advantage.
Now back in California, the Bulldogs will be a smarter team against a Northwestern team that certainly hasn't played a schedule that will test it like Fresno State will today.
The Wildcats are 3-0, but the wins came against New Orleans, American and Binghamton. And they were all in Evanston. Now the 'Cats bring their show to Fullerton to face a well-coached, disciplined and tenacious team. Fresno State, which has won 13 of 19 non-conference tournament games, leads the Mountain West in steals (9.5 spg) and turnover margin (+4.5).
This is supposed to be a rebuild year for Northwestern, which was picked to finish near the bottom of the Big 10 standings. The Wildcats have relied heavily on transfer Ryan Taylor through three games, and Vic Law, who is expected to make huge improvements this season.
I don't trust an unproven lineup laying this many points against a scrappy bunch like the Bulldogs. I'll take the underdog here.
