The road trip isn't going so well for the Boston Celtics, and the frustration is starting to show. Kyrie Irving and company will try to keep their focus on their own issues on the court and avoid a three-game slide when they Celtics visit the Phoenix Suns on Thursday.

The Celtics dropped a 102-101 heartbreaker at Indiana to begin the five-game trip and fell 115-107 at Denver on Monday in a game that was most notable for Nuggets guard Jamal Murray scoring 48 points and Irving getting upset when he tried for 50 in the final seconds. "There's a tradition and a respect within the league, as well as in any basketball game," Irving, who was fined $25,000 by the NBA for throwing the ball into the stands after the game, told reporters. "Obviously, you've won the game, you have it sealed, you've had a great game, game of your life, and you do something like that, it's just ... it's petty. It's immature." The Suns have their own guard capable of dropping 50 points in Devin Booker, but he is more concerned with his young team building some cohesion. "I think all good teams have that trust and chemistry, where they're able to get on each other and know that it's for a better purpose," Booker told reporters. "For us, I don't think we have that right now. We're not comfortable with each other, we don't step on each other's toes, we don't push each other, and I think that's what we need to do."

ABOUT THE CELTICS (6-4): Boston held a 10-point edge after the first quarter in Indiana and enjoyed a 15-point cushion after the first period in Denver, only to take a tumble in the second. "We just got to keep doing what it takes to win, like the stuff that gets us our lead, we have to maintain," Celtics guard Jaylen Brown told reporters. "We can't start wavering after we get a big lead. We've got to keep hitting them in the mouth. We let our foot off the gas, we lose." ABOUT THE SUNS (2-8): Booker scored a team-high 25 points in a 102-100 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday that snapped a seven-game slide but needed 21 shots to reach 20 points in a 104-82 loss at home to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday. "We thought last game would be our step forward," Booker told reporters after the loss. "We definitely took a step back tonight. We didn't protect home court, came in here and got blown out in front of our fans. It's embarrassing." Booker is trying to build chemistry with No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton, who collected 15 points and 13 rebounds for his sixth double-double on Tuesday but struggled to 6-of-17 from the floor.

CJ McCollum has put a slump behind him and looks to follow up his best outing of the season when the Portland Trail Blazers host the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday. McCollum exploded for 40 points in Tuesday's 118-103 win over the Milwaukee Bucks and also added six assists and five rebounds.

McCollum was 17-of-26 shooting and made five 3-pointers in a strong showing that followed a stretch in which he scored fewer than 20 points in five of six games. "Whether I play well or not, I know how much time I spend preparing," McCollum told reporters following the fourth 40-point outing of his career. "The only thing I saw was I had a lot of in-and-outs and I was shooting with a dead wrist. That was the only thing I noticed. I wasn't locking my wrist out, so I just tried to lock my wrist out." The Clippers are looking for their first three-game winning streak of the season after scoring 120 points in back-to-back wins over the Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves. "This team likes to play together and they understand that if one guy or a group is going they're fine with waiting," Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers told reporters of his team's unselfish approach.

Preview: Bucks at Warriors

The Golden State Warriors remain the team to beat in the NBA, but the Milwaukee Bucks are building something special and are intent on proving they belong among the game's elite. The Bucks will try to prove as much when they visit the Warriors in the second of a four-game west coast road trip on Thursday.

Milwaukee won its first seven games before dropping two of the last three, including a 118-103 loss at Portland on Tuesday to begin the trip. "I didn't think we came out with the greatest attention to the 3-ball, attention to them coming off screening situations," Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters after the loss. "So, that put us in a little bit of a hole." Lack of attention to detail on the 3-ball and in screening situations can doom an opponent of the Warriors, who lead the NBA in team 3-point percentage at .423 while boasting three of the best shooters in the game in Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant, all of whom can operate off the screen. Golden State is enjoying an eight-game winning streak and knocked down 13-of-24 from beyond the arc while cruising to a 117-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday.

ABOUT THE BUCKS (8-2): Milwaukee star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is the driving force behind the team's hot start and is averaging 25.8 points on 54.4 percent shooting, 13.3 rebounds and 5.9 assists while drawing praise from his fellow superstars. "He's just very unique and I think he owns his game," Curry told reporters of Antetokounmpo. "He understands how he can be impactful every night. He obviously plays extremely hard every night. Some of the stuff he does, your jaw drops. The way he can cover ground in a few strides, the way he can finish in the paint and all those types of things, it's pretty special." Antetokounmpo is also second in the NBA in turnovers at an average of five per game.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (10-1): Curry leads the NBA in scoring at an average of 31.3 points while shooting 52.5 percent from the floor, 50.8 percent from beyond the arc and 92.3 percent from the free-throw line. Durant is right behind while averaging 27.7 points on 56.5 percent shooting, but the two will have to operate on Thursday without fellow All-Star Draymond Green, who is out with a sprained big toe suffered in Monday's win. So, we'll just monitor it each day, and we're so early in the season, obviously we'll be cautious. We'll see how it plays out."

Danny Hurley turned around programs at Wagner and Rhode Island before taking on his newest challenge, returning a tarnished Connecticut brand to national prominence. Hurley claimed “there won’t be a harder playing team,” when he took the job in March, and Huskies fans will see that team firsthand Thursday when Connecticut hosts Morehead State.


Hurley took over a five-win team at Wagner in 2010-11, won 25 games two years later and posted three 20-plus win campaigns in his final four seasons at Rhode Island before joining UConn, which was in the middle of an ugly divorce from former coach Kevin Ollie. After two losing seasons, Ollie, who led the team to a national title in 2014, was fired for "just cause" which led to the former UConn player threatening a lawsuit against the school. Now with Hurley guiding the way, senior guard Jalen Adams will have to play a big role if the Huskies are going to outplay their fifth place preseason prediction by the coaches. “You get held to an even greater standard when you're the best player because you set the pace of the pack. You've got to do everything right,” Hurley told the Hartford Courant about Adams. “Culture is something you have to fight for every day. Our culture is not where it needs to be, overall. When you win 30 games in two years, it's not just a talent issue, it's not just one thing.”

ABOUT MOREHEAD STATE (1-0): The Eagles, who finished last in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 4-14 record last season, opened the 2018-19 campaign with a 102-82 victory over NAIA Kentucky Christian on Tuesday. Malek Green scored a career-best 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting and fellow sophomore De'von Cooper also registered a career best with 16 points. Jordan Walker (12.2 points per game in 2017-18) scored 13 and fellow 6-0 guard A.J. Hicks (11.0 points, 4.2 assists) chipped in 10 points and six assists.
ABOUT CONNECTICUT (2017-18: 14-18): The 6-3 Adams averaged 18.1 points, 4.7 assists and 4.2 rebounds last season, but Hurley wants him to understand that “a great player plays every possession both ends of the court,” and that he needs to improve upon his 3-point shooting (32.4 percent). Christian Vital (14.9 points, 5.4 rebounds), a 6-2 junior, also returns after considering jumping to the NBA, and the backcourt could also get a boost from a healthy Alterique Gilbert, a 6-0 McDonald’s All-American who has played in just nine games over two seasons due to serious shoulder injuries. Josh Carlton, a 6-9, 240-pound sophomore (4.4 points, 3.7 rebounds) is the top returner in a front court that is very thin on experience.

1. The Huskies defeated Division II Southern Connecticut 96-64 in their only exhibition game as 6-4 freshman Brendan Adams scored 17 points and Jalen Adams added 16. Jalen Adams sat the first six minutes due to violation of team rules.

2. Adams joined SMU’s Shake Milton as the only players in the AAC to average at least 18 points, four rebounds and four assists last season. Only 10 others around the country were part of that list.

3. Connecticut ranked among the bottom fifth in the country in scoring (68.2 points), shooting (41.6 percent) and 3-point shooting (32.6 percent).

Preview: Chicago State at Notre Dame

Notre Dame looks to move to 2-0 on the new season as it welcomes Chicago State on Thursday evening. The Fighting Irish, who are fielding one of their youngest lineups under coach Mike Brey, had three freshmen score in double figures in an 84-67 victory over Illinois-Chicago to open the year on Tuesday night.

Guard Robby Carmody became the first freshman to start an opener for Notre Dame since 2002 and he didn’t disappoint, scoring 11 points on just five field-goal attempts, while adding four rebounds and two steals. First-year forward Nate Laszewski led the Irish with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench and Dane Goodwin scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds in his collegiate debut as the youngsters made a strong impression on their opponent. "I thought watching them in their exhibition, (Notre Dame's) young players really took a big jump from the exhibition to tonight," Illinois-Chicago coach Steve McClain told reporters after the game. Chicago-State is looking to bounce back after a tough start to the season where it lost 104-55 at Indiana on Tuesday night.

ABOUT CHICAGO STATE (0-1): Chicago-State knew it was in for a tough night as a 37.5-point underdog against the Hoosiers but the reality is that the Cougars lost their top-four scorers from a squad that went 3-29 last season. The Cougars struggled in just about every area of the game on Tuesday, shooting just 31.7 percent from the field, turning the ball over 20 times and getting outscored 54-24 in the paint. One bright spot for Chicago-State was senior guard Anthony Harris, who scored a team-high 14 on 4-of-6 shooting from the field.

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (1-0): Notre Dame’s two returning starters struggled on Tuesday night as junior guard T.J. Gibbs scored nine points on 2-of-12 shooting and senior guard Rex Pflueger had just five on 1-of-6 shooting. In fact, the Irish will be looking to improve on their overall offensive efficiency on Thursday as they made just 22 field goals on 62 attempts (35.5 percent) against Illinois-Chicago. Notre Dame was able to overcome its shooting woes with an impressive performance at the free-throw line as the team combined to make 36-of-38 (94.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
