KEY STAT: Anderlecht are unbeaten at home this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Tottenham have got their Europa League campaign off to a steady start but they may have to settle for a point in Belgium. Manager Mauricio Pochettino is sure to ring the changes before Sunday’s match at Bournemouth and that should give Anderlecht the chance to deny Spurs victory.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Liverpool have lost just once in six home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Jurgen Klopp is sure to receive a huge welcome in his first home match as Liverpool manager and the fans’ euphoria can carry the Reds to victory. After stumbling to two draws in Group B, Liverpool can secure their first Europa League win against bottom club Rubin with something to spare.

RECOMMENDATION: Liverpool-Liverpool double result

KEY STAT: Molde have kept just one clean sheet in their last seven European matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Molde are the surprise leaders of Group A after taking four points from their opening two games but may have to settle for a share of the spoils here. Celtic have drawn their two matches and will target four points from their matches with Molde to stay on track for the last 32.

KEY STAT: Villa have picked up only one point in four league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Reports that Tim Sherwood is fighting to save his job will intensify if Aston Villa, still without a home win, fail to beat Swansea. And although the Swans are winless in their last four away games, they are playing better than recent results suggest and could hammer the final nail into Sherwood’s coffin.

KEY STAT: Leicester have scored at least two goals in each of their last five league games

EXPERT VERDICT: There have been 36 goals in eight Premier League games involving Leicester and the entertainment is unlikely to stop when Crystal Palace visit. The Eagles won 3-1 at Norwich and 2-1 at Chelsea and Alan Pardew may try to out-shoot the Foxes rather than contain them.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Watford have lost just three of their nine league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Watford have looked a solid side upon their return to the top flight, losing only to Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Arsenal, and they are capable of picking up more points at the Britannia. Stoke invested in decent players this summer but they look a little too short to take maximum points.

Preview: Seattle at San Francisco

When: 8:25 PM ET, Thursday, October 22, 2015
Where: Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, California

The Seattle Seahawks will look to reverse a disturbing trend of late-game collapses when they visit the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night in a matchup of bitter NFC West division rivals. The Seahawks have dropped two straight games, blowing a 17-point fourth-quarter lead in an overtime defeat at Cincinnati before allowing two late TDs in last week's 27-23 setback versus Carolina.

"Our expectations are that we should be winning all of these games," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. "We should be 6-0 and we should be rolling right now." The 49ers snapped a four-game losing streak with their best performance since the season opener in a 25-20 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Although the loser of the game will fall into the division cellar, San Francisco coach Jim Tomsula said his club is not approaching the game like a matchup between also-rans. "Anytime you play Seattle, it’s a big deal," he said. "So I wouldn’t expect that we’ve got to get anybody pumped up for this game.”

TV: 8:25 p.m. ET, CBS, NFL Network. LINE: Seahawks -6. O/U: 42

ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS (2-4): Although quarterback Russell Wilson was sacked four times last week to boost his league-leading total to 26, he finally established a strong connection with tight end Jimmy Graham, who had eight receptions for 140 yards. Running back Marshawn Lynch returned from a two-game injury absence to rush for 54 yards on seven carries, but middle linebacker Bobby Wagner (pectoral) missed the game and is questionable for Thursday. Seattle's Legion of Boom secondary has been gashed by tight ends in consecutive games, including the game-winning TD to a wide-open Greg Olsen on a blown coverage.

ABOUT THE 49ERS (2-4): Colin Kaepernick is coming off his best game of the season, throwing for 340 yards and a pair of TDs on Sunday, but he has struggled against the Seahawks with only three scoring passes versus nine interceptions. In addition, two of Kaepernick's top weapons are hurting - leading rusher Carlos Hyde is dealing with a foot injury while veteran wideout Anquan Boldin is nursing an ailing hamstring after registering consecutive 100-yard games the past two weeks. San Francisco's pass defense has been especially vulnerable, ranking last in the league with 306.2 yards allowed per game.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Seattle has won five of the past six matchups (playoffs included) and limited San Francisco to 10 points in sweeping the series last season.

2. Kaepernick is 1-5 (postseason included) in his career against Seattle.

3. The Seahawks have been outscored 48-9 in the fourth quarter of their past five games.

Preview: Temple at East Carolina

When: 7:00 PM ET, Thursday, October 22, 2015
Where: Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, Greenville, North Carolina

Temple is a ranked program for the first time since 1979 and the No. 24 Owls aim to remain there when they visit East Carolina on Thursday. Temple has equaled its best start since 1974 and can take full control of the East Division of the American Athletic Conference with a win over the Pirates, who stand one game behind in the division race.

The Owls have a strong chance at reaching the school-record 10 wins posted by the 1979 squad and coach Matt Rhule expressed pleasure and caution upon the rankings being released. "I'm really proud of our players and it's a tribute to them that people have noticed how they have played to this point," Rhule said. "I am thrilled that we have been able to get off to a 6-0 start. But I'll repeat what I have said before, it's a long season and I'll be happier if we can finish the year ranked among the best in the country." East Carolina has won three of its past four games and coach Ruffin McNeill knows it will take a big effort to notch another victory. "We know we have a great opponent in Temple," McNeill told reporters. "They're a great team. They're not winning by luck. It's execution. That's an uncontrollable."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2. LINE: East Carolina -3.

ABOUT TEMPLE (6-0, 3-0 AAC): Junior running back Jahad Thomas had career highs of 199 yards and three touchdowns in last Saturday's victory over Central Florida and he leads the AAC with 756 yards while rushing for 10 touchdowns. Junior quarterback P.J. Walker ranks second in program history with 41 career touchdown passes and he has thrown for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns against three interceptions this season. Senior standout outside linebacker Tyler Matakevich has a team-best 52 tackles this season and 407 in his career to become only the third Temple player to surpass 400, and he also has a team-best three interceptions with sophomore cornerback Sean Chandler and senior free safety Alex Wells right behind him with two.

ABOUT EAST CAROLINA (4-3, 2-1): Junior quarterback Blake Kemp ranks fifth nationally with a 71.3 completion percentage and has thrown for 1,556 yards and 10 touchdowns against six interceptions. Junior wideout Isaiah Jones has caught 10 or more passes three times this season and has team-best totals of 51 receptions and 595 yards. Senior inside linebacker Zeek Bigger has a team-best 58 tackles, sophomore linebacker Montese Overton has a team-leading 7.5 sacks and senior cornerback Josh Hawkins has a team-high two interceptions, including a 100-yard return for touchdown against Central Florida.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Temple posted a 20-10 victory last season in the first meeting since 1995.

2. The Owls have 17 sacks, led by senior DE Nate D. Smith with 5.5.

3. Jones is six receptions away from becoming the third player in East Carolina history to reach 200 for his career.

Preview: California at UCLA

When: 9:00 PM ET, Thursday, October 22, 2015
Where: Rose Bowl, Pasadena, California

California looks to bounce back from its first loss on Thursday as the 19th-ranked Golden Bears visit injury-plagued UCLA, which has struggled without three defensive starters. The Bruins, who have dropped back-to-back games after opening with four straight wins, spent their bye week searching for ways to slow down a California offense that ranks 12th nationally in scoring at 40.2 points per game.

The Golden Bears have been off since Oct. 10, when quarterback Jared Goff’s Heisman Trophy campaign derailed as the junior threw five interceptions in a 30-24 loss at Utah. Goff is tied for eighth nationally in touchdown passes (17) and is 12th in passing yards (1,970) despite playing behind an offensive line that has allowed 11 sacks in the past three games. He should have more time to throw against a depleted UCLA defense that has lost tackle Eddie Vanderdoes, linebacker Myles Jack and cornerback Fabian Moreau to season-ending injuries. If UCLA is going to avoid its first three-game regular-season losing streak since 2010, the Bruins will likely need freshman quarterback Josh Rosen to keep pace with Goff and the high-powered California offense.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Thursday, ESPN. LINE: UCLA -3.5

ABOUT CALIFORNIA (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12): The Golden Bears are seeking to avenge their 36-34 loss to UCLA last season, when Goff threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns, including one to wide receiver Kenny Lawler, who leads this year’s squad with 34 catches, 465 yards and eight TDs. The running game could receive a spark if Daniel Lasco (hip) is available after missing most of the last four games. Defensive end Kyle Kragen (35 tackles and five sacks) heads a unit that ranks first in the nation with 21 turnovers gained but failed to contain Utah’s Devontae Booker, who rushed for 222 yards and two scores.

ABOUT UCLA (4-2, 1-2): Rosen has thrown for 889 yards and seven touchdowns in his last three games, but he’s been sacked five times in the last two and will likely be without starting left tackle Conor McDermott, who is listed as questionable due to a sprained knee. Paul Perkins, who leads UCLA with 681 yards rushing and eight touchdowns, could receive a heavy workload against a California defense that was dominated by Utah’s ground game. Run defense has been a major concern for UCLA, which is allowing 285 rushing yards per game in Pac-12 play after Stanford ran for 310 in last Thursday’s 56-35 win over the Bruins.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The Bruins have won their last two home games against California by a combined 44 points.

2. UCLA has been penalized 47 times, a Pac-12-high 7.8 per game.

3. California is one win away from becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 2011.

NFL Week 7 Essentials

Thursday, Oct. 22

Seattle at San Francisco:

Even though the Kam Chancellor holdout drama prevented a smooth start, the Seahawks couldn’t have envisioned entering this Thursday night game with a 2-4 record. Seattle has already lost more games than it has in a single season since 2012. Worse yet, it has dropped consecutive games with fourth-quarter meltdowns where its vaunted secondary has failed to get a stop.

Meanwhile, Colin Kaepernick threw for 340 yards to lead the 49ers past Baltimore as a motivated Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin combined for eight catches and 198 yards against their former team. If the 49ers have overcome their early struggles in the passing game, they’ve got the ingredients to put together a formidable offense. Kaepernick has historically struggled against the Seattle secondary, coming in 2-4 in regular-season games with two TDs against seven interceptions. He was also memorably picked off twice in the fourth quarter of the 2013 NFC Championship game. You get the feeling the season prospects for both these teams hinges on the outcome here.

Seahawks left searching for answers after another collapse

RENTON, Wash. (AP) Earl Thomas could not wait to get to his team meeting on Monday.

Players had to air out what has gone wrong with the Seattle Seahawks.

''We're not being (ourselves),'' Thomas said. ''I think we're distracted in some areas. I think today is a big day for us.''

All is not right with the two-time defending NFC champions. Their weeks are now being spent explaining what's gone wrong. That's the result of a 2-4 start that has featured two straight fourth-quarter collapses that simply have not happened in the past.

For a team with ''Finish'' as one of their mottos, the Seahawks are not living up to one of their core tenets.

And there's little time to get the problem fixed with a Thursday night game at San Francisco on the docket.

''Not finishing these last two games were really crucial. We've got to get better at the end,'' Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Monday. ''The execution that got us in the lead and put us in position early in the game just needs to continue. We don't really need to do anything different. We need to continue the execution and not let it fall where they take advantage of the last quarter, which has happened.''

The latest collapse came Sunday when the Seahawks led 23-14 with less than 12 minutes remaining and walked out of their home stadium baffled by a 27-23 loss to the Panthers, punctuated by a miscommunication on Greg Olsen's winning 26-yard touchdown catch with 32 seconds left. Instead of staying with Olsen, All-Pros Thomas and Richard Sherman were caught playing two different coverages after getting mixed signals. The result was Olsen running uncovered.

''Our communication now is really at a high level, and unfortunately you can make a mistake, and we did,'' Carroll said. ''We let them down there before that all happened, and they already were in field goal range and all that. We hadn't done the right things earlier, but that was a big mistake.''

The collapse against Carolina might not sting as much if the same thing hadn't happened just a week earlier and on an even grander scale. The Seahawks led Cincinnati 24-7 in the fourth quarter, only to lose 27-24 in overtime. In all four of Seattle's losses this season, the Seahawks have led in the fourth quarter.

That fact has led to plenty of blame being placed on Seattle's defense for being unable to hold late leads. The Seahawks are 28th in the NFL in fourth-quarter points allowed with 55 and are a minus-28 in point differential. Since Week 1, the Seahawks are being outscored 48-9 in the fourth quarter.

But there is blame for Seattle's offense, too, for not being able to sustain drives late.

''Our third-down play is not good enough right now. We are not able to get that next turnaround, that next opportunity and we are missing out on a lot of really cool stuff that we have,'' Carroll said. ''We didn't run the football as much as we wanted to because we didn't convert enough.''

In the past two games, Seattle has five total first downs in the fourth quarter. Seattle was 1 of 4 on third downs in the fourth quarter against Carolina after going 1 of 5 in the fourth quarter and overtime of the loss to Cincinnati.

Combined with the defensive problems, it's a mix that has the Seahawks facing trouble they haven't experienced the past few seasons.

''These situations, they're not going to break us,'' Thomas said.

NOTES:

Carroll is hopeful that LB Bobby Wagner (pectoral) will be able to play vs. San Francisco after sitting out Sunday's loss. ... C Patrick Lewis, who made his first start of the season on Sunday, suffered ankle and knee injuries and is in doubt for Thursday. ... T Garry Gilliam (ankle) and WR Tyler Lockett (hip) were also banged up against Carolina but Carroll had no update on their status for Thursday.

49ers look to build momentum in short week after second win

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) Colin Kaepernick, dressed in a rare postgame suit with a green tie and sporting spectacles, strolled through Levi's Stadium with a little more spring in his step.

And, if you ask his teammates, he is having fun and smiling each day.

Winning can do that for you, and Kaepernick had been especially beat down in recent weeks as the San Francisco 49ers endured an embarrassing four-game losing streak.

He is facing less scrutiny after going two games without an interception after throwing five picks over the previous two.

''People can talk all they want. That doesn't affect how I go about my business,'' Kaepernick said.

Now, the Niners believe they can play themselves right back into the NFC West race, as crazy as that might sound with one victory - Sunday's 25-20 home win against the Baltimore Ravens - on the heels of that skid.

With rival Seattle coming to town in a matter of days, and both teams sitting at 2-4, there is a chance for the Niners to change their fortunes in the division if they can get on a little roll.

''You understand what's at stake. The more you win the better position you're going to be in,'' wide receiver Torrey Smith said. ''We just need to try to figure out a way to win the next game. We can't really look too far ahead. We aren't in any position to even think about doing that with our record.''

While San Francisco has yet to beat a winning team, Sunday's victory over the Ravens (1-5) for the team's first win since Week 1 still did plenty for this group.

Kaepernick went 16 of 27 for 340 yards and threw a 76-yard touchdown pass to Smith, who had three receptions for 96 yards while Anquan Boldin made five catches for 102 yards.

''The one thing I have thought about these guys is that they've shown up for work every week and locked their jaw and gone to work,'' coach Jim Tomsula said Monday.

Seattle has won five of the last six against San Francisco, including playoffs.

Regardless of records, there's always a little more on the line when the 49ers and Seahawks play.

''Everybody gets a little anxious for this game,'' said cornerback Kenneth Acker, who was wide open without a receiver in sight when he made an interception in the third quarter Sunday against Joe Flacco and returned it 45 yards.

Everybody wants to make sure San Francisco takes another step forward.

''Anything positive we can get we got to keep it going right now,'' Smith said. ''We can't really spend too much time being happy about this because we have a tough defense coming here on Thursday so we have to get our mind right for that.''

The 49ers received a one-game roster exemption for wideout Jerome Simpson, who is returning to practice this week after serving his six-game suspension for violations of the NFL's substance-abuse policy. San Francisco would have to clear room on the 53-man roster for Simpson if it decides to play him right away this week.

Tomsula said there is concern linebacker NaVorro Bowman is playing too much on his surgically repaired left knee, injured against the Seahawks in the NFC title game nearly two years ago. It sidelined Bowman for all of 2014.

He played all 77 snaps Sunday.

''I realize they're high. That's something I look at on every player,'' Tomsula said. ''We've got to get them down. We've got to get some of those reps down on him.''

Notes:

Boldin had a defender land on his leg and was being checked. ... Tomsula said he's ''very optimistic'' RB Reggie Bush will play Thursday night after missing his third game Sunday because of a lingering left calf injury sustained in the season opener. ... RB Carlos Hyde is still dealing with a tender foot that Tomsula said is bruised and requires an orthotic. The coach said it's not plantar fasciitis and he doesn't fear it is a serious injury.

Seahawks' Jackson uninjured in car crash

RENTON, Wash. (AP) Seattle Seahawks running back Fred Jackson was uninjured when his car crashed outside the team's facility on Tuesday.

The Renton Police Department said shortly before 5 p.m. PDT on Tuesday, Jackson lost control of his 2016 Chevrolet Corvette as he drove down Seahawks Way. The crash happened about 48 hours before the Seahawks face the San Francisco 49ers in a Thursday night game.

Jackson's vehicle sustained moderate front end damage. Jackson remained on scene until officers arrived and was cooperative. He was then taken by team personnel back to the facility and did not report any injuries.

Photos of Jackson's car with New York license plates were seen on social media. A stop sign and street signs were knocked over in the wreck. The accident happened at the end of a long straight road with a slight bend at the end that leads from the Seahawks facility to Lake Washington Blvd. The stop sign knocked over was in front of a ''Welcome to Renton'' sign that includes the Seahawks logo.

Early reports indicated Jackson may have been racing with a teammate and that's what caused the accident, but Renton police say those reports are false and there was no indication that Jackson was racing.

Jackson tweeted thanks to those who expressed concern later Tuesday night and wrote he simply lost control and wasn't racing.

''My teammates, including Marshawn (Lynch), stopped 2 check on me,'' Jackson wrote.

Jackson signed with Seattle right before the start of the regular season after being a surprise cut by the Buffalo Bills. The move to Seattle reunited Jackson with Lynch, a teammate with the Bills.

Jackson has been used sparingly and mostly as a third-down running back with the Seahawks. He suffered a high-ankle sprain in a Monday night game against Detroit but played six days later against Cincinnati.

Jackson has 10 carries for 52 yards and 12 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown in Seattle's first six games.

Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers (+4.5)

The Seahawks have now lost back-to-back games for the second time this season and at 2-4 they really have to start winning division games. They did get off to a similar (3-3) start last season, and had to go belly button to the wall in the late going to win the NFC West.

A division loss on the road this Thursday will make a second straight climb all the more difficult, even in the weak NFC West. Over the last two years, Seattle has seemed to win the vast majority of games that it has absolutely needed (last February’s Super Bowl notwithstanding), and the Seahawks are once again in the same spot. This line will only move in Seattle’s direction, so money now makes sense if you are on the defending NFC champs.
