KEY STAT: Mainz have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Borussia Dortmund's title hopes took a massive hit when they lost 5-1 at Bayern Munich before the international break but they can respond by beating mid-table Mainz at Stadion am Bruchweg. A fortnight off has given Dortmund time to clear their heads and should improve their chances against Mainz, who have lost three of their last five matches.

RECOMMENDATION: Borussia Dortmund

KEY STAT: Forest have lost one of five away games this season

EXPERT VERDICT: Bristol City’s winless record at home in the Championship makes them hard to have any faith in and, despite Nottingham Forest’s shaky start, the Tricky Trees should prevail. Forest have enough class to dispose of the division’s bottom club and their style of play makes them hard to beat on the road.

RECOMMENDATION: Nottingham Forest

KEY STAT: Both teams have scored in four of Ross County’s last five games

EXPERT VERDICT: Aberdeen’s winning start to the Scottish Premiership season was ended after eight games on their last trip to the Highlands – at Inverness – and they then lost 5-1 to St Johnstone. Ross County may also be coming off the boil after a solid start, and both teams to score could be the call.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

KEY STAT: Leigh Griffiths has eight goals in ten league games

EXPERT VERDICT: Celtic’s price to win this match looks about right and their leaky defence on the road points to a bet on both teams scoring. But Motherwell, who sacked manager Ian Baraclough in late September, lack attacking bite. The safer bet could be on in-form striker Leigh Griffiths scoring first.

RECOMMENDATION: L Griffiths first scorer

EXPERT VERDICT: Sheffield Wednesday’s squad have shown signs of settling during an excellent recent run and they should pose a threat to Hull. Hull’s games have been low-scoring this season and their experienced side should be capable of controlling the tempo of the game and keeping things tight.

KEY STAT: Liverpool haven’t kept a clean sheet in eight matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Jurgen Klopp is likely to prove a fine managerial appointment for Liverpool, but this trip to White Hart Lane comes a little early for the German to have made an impression. No top-flight side has conceded fewer goals than Spurs this term and their attacking players are starting to gel nicely.

Thursday's Tip Sheet

The Thursday night schedule in college football features three games this week including intriguing matchups in the SEC and Pac-12. The SEC contest features two programs fighting for the postseason while the late night Pac-12 game could be a conference championship preview.

Match-up: Auburn Tigers at Kentucky Wildcats
Venue: Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky
Time/TV: Thursday, October 15, 7:00 PM ET – ESPN
Line: Auburn -3, Over/Under 51½
Last Meeting: 2010, Auburn (-6) 37-34 at Kentucky

The last time these teams met was in 2010 when a 5-0 Auburn squad led by Cam Newton had just cracked the top 10 and was starting to generate some buzz. Auburn seemed to pull away in the second quarter with a 31-14 lead, but Kentucky hit a field goal just before the break and by the end of the third quarter the game was tied after back-to-back touchdowns by Randall Cobb. Auburn closed the game with a 19-play drive that led to a game winning field goal as time expired. The Tigers would go on to win the SEC and national titles that season while Kentucky finished 6-6 before losing to Pittsburgh in the Compass Bowl.

That was the last season in which Kentucky made the postseason, but hopes are high that this is the breakthrough year with a 4-1 start following up last season’s 5-7 campaign. Mark Stopps has already produced as many SEC wins this season as in the past two seasons combined with wins over South Carolina and Missouri, but there is a difficult schedule remaining and nothing is assured for a team that lost the final six games of the season last year after a 5-1 start and needed overtime to beat FCS Eastern Kentucky in its last game.

Junior quarterback Patrick Towles has thrown eight touchdown passes, but he also has six interceptions. He played his best game in the team’s biggest win, a 21-13 home win over Missouri that featured two late scoring drives from Towles. Kentucky is not a great rushing team averaging only 3.8 yards per carry, but sophomore Stanley Williams has featured big play potential with 343 rushing yards already this season. Four receivers have double-digit receptions already this season but this is not an imposing offense, ranking 94th nationally in total offense and 87th in scoring offense. The Kentucky defense has allowed fewer than 22 points per game through a respectable schedule.

Auburn made the national title game in 2013, the first season with Gus Malzahn as the head coach. Malzahn was the offensive coordinator for the 2010 championship season and he won 17 of his first 19 games as the head coach of the Tigers. Auburn lost five of the final eight last season, including the Outback Bowl for a disappointing finish. Many expected Auburn to be back in SEC and national contention this season, but at 3-2 and most of the toughest games still ahead it has been a very disappointing start. Like Kentucky, Auburn had to survive a scare vs. FCS competition, but the Tigers are 0-2 in SEC play with losses to LSU and Mississippi State, getting outscored 62-30 in those two games.

Quarterback Jeremy Johnson was expected to smoothly take over the offense but it has been a great struggle for the junior who dazzled in brief playing time in the 2014 season. After the disastrous LSU game, Johnson has sat out the last two weeks with freshman Sean White producing no better results the past two weeks. Auburn has not named a starter at quarterback at this point for Thursday’s critical conference game.

Auburn struggled defensively last season allowing nearly 400 yards per game and former Florida head coach Will Muschamp was seen as a great hire to lead the defense this season. The numbers are even worse so far this season and the challenge will only increase the rest of the way. After this game, the Tigers face SEC West powers Arkansas, Mississippi, and Texas A&M before a tough crossover game with Georgia. Auburn will finish the season hosting Alabama as well and bowl eligibility is a serious question mark for this team despite projections of being a national playoff sleeper before the season started.

This game won’t have national playoff implications or likely even SEC implications in most scenarios, but the loser of this game will face serious questions about even making the postseason as wins will not be easy to come by the rest of the way. While this isn’t the most glamorous SEC matchup, the game comes at a critical juncture for both programs and it will certainly be a compelling game.

Match-up: UCLA Bruins at Stanford Cardinal
Venue: Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California
Time/TV: Thursday, October 15, 10:30 PM ET – ESPN
Line: Stanford -6½, Over/Under 55½
Last Meeting: 2014, Stanford (+5) 31-10 at UCLA

Stanford and UCLA both entered the season with 5/1 odds to win the Pac-12, both projected second in divisions trailing USC and Oregon. While Stanford’s opening week loss to Northwestern has crippled their national playoff hopes, the Cardinal are 3-0 in Pac-12 play and figure to be the heavy favorites the rest of the way in the North with Oregon already with two losses and Washington and California both having to visit Stanford. Hosting this difficult crossover game is definitely critical to any hopes to stay in the national picture as a two-loss Pac-12 champion wouldn’t be ruled out, it would take a lot of help around the rest of the nation.

UCLA opened the season 4-0, but a home loss to Arizona State has spoiled the season. While that loss on its own would not likely be overly damaging by season’s end, the rest of the Pac-12 schedule features three very difficult road games with this game, plus road tests at Utah and at USC. Utah has grabbed the headlines in the Pac-12 South, but the Utes have a long ways to go in a very deep division with the Utes 2-0 in league play with both games vs. the North.

At quarterback, UCLA freshman Josh Rosen took the nation by storm emerging as a Heisman candidate as a true freshman. His team survived his worst game of the season with a comeback win against BYU and he has played well in both Pac-12 games, though the turnovers are starting to add up. Paul Perkins is one of the top running backs in the nation with 577 yards already this season and Jordan Payton is among the top receivers in the conference. Defensive injuries have taken a toll with three starters already knocked out of action and taking on a physical Stanford offense will be a challenge.

Senior quarterback Kevin Hogan had a tough 2015 debut for Stanford with an ugly game against a very good Northwestern defense, but he has responded with nine touchdowns and just one interception in four games since. He had a great game in Stanford’s big win at USC and he is spreading the ball around while also leaning on sophomore running back Christian McCaffrey who has nearly doubled his production from last season already. Stanford ranks in the 30's nationally in scoring and total defense at this point in the season despite taking on a challenging schedule as well.

The Cardinal have won seven in a row in this series with a win every year back to 2009 and only one missed cover in that span. It was a blowout last season with Stanford winning 31-10 in Los Angeles. If Stanford wins this game they should be an even heavier favorite in every remaining Pac-12 game and with the finale against Notre Dame and then a potential Pac-12 championship game vs. a quality team, this is a team that will have a say in the national playoff picture if they win out. UCLA has a tougher path, but they will have the opportunity to wipe away the upset loss to the Sun Devils by adding up quality road wins as the Bruins should not be ruled out just yet and regardless of the Thursday night result these teams could definitely meet again in December.

Preview: Auburn at Kentucky

When: 7:00 PM ET, Thursday, October 15, 2015
Where: Commonwealth Stadium, Lexington, Kentucky

October typically finds Kentucky thinking about the start of basketball practice, but four victories in five games has football squarely in the spotlight as the hot Wildcats host Auburn on Thursday. Kentucky sits in second place in the SEC East and, despite not having leading rusher Stanley Williams in its last game Oct. 4, rallied from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to dodge Eastern Kentucky’s upset bid 34-27 in overtime.

Williams, who is eighth nationally in yards per carry (7.3), sat with what Kentucky coach Mark Stoops deemed “personal issues,” but will start against an Auburn team seeking stability at quarterback. Sean White replaced Jeremy Johnson three games into the season, but Auburn coach Gus Malzahn told reporters he would not decide on a starter until later in the week. Whoever plays – and it is possible both players see time under center – has to do something to get the Tigers’ passing attack on track. Auburn ranks 113th nationally in passing offense and saw standout receiver Duke Williams dismissed from the team last week.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Auburn --2

ABOUT AUBURN (3-2, 0-2 SEC): The Tigers arguably are the country’s biggest disappointment this side of Oregon, plummeting from seventh in the nation in preseason to last place in the SEC West. Johnson threw six interceptions in three games and lined up at wide receiver in last week’s 35-21 victory over San Jose State, while White is 26-for-38 for 296 yards and no touchdowns in his first two contests. Defensive back Johnathan Ford is tied for sixth in the SEC with 49 tackles and set a career high with 14 last week, but the Tigers are allowing 412 yards per contest.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (4-1, 2-1 SEC): The Wildcats sorely missed Williams, rushing for only 55 yards against Eastern Kentucky, but were bailed out by a strong performance from quarterback Patrick Towles (329 yards, three touchdown passes). Kentucky’s offense has been inconsistent but the Wildcats have scored on each of their 16 trips inside the red zone this season, including 12 touchdowns. Defensive tackle Cory Johnson set a school record for defensive linemen with a career-high 19 tackles against Eastern Kentucky, and linebacker Josh Forrest has a team-high 49.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Auburn has won 16 of the past 17 matchups with Kentucky and has not lost in Lexington since 1966.

2. The Wildcats will get LT Jordan Swindle (groin) and DT Regie Meant (shoulder) back after both missed time the past two games.

3. Auburn RB Peyton Barber ranks sixth in the SEC in rushing with 558 yards -- 284 on 55 carries the past two weeks combined -- and scored five touchdowns against San Jose State.

PREDICTION: Kentucky 24, Auburn 20

Preview: UCLA at Stanford

When: 10:30 PM ET, Thursday, October 15, 2015
Where: Stanford Stadium, Stanford, California

No. 18 UCLA used its bye week to prepare for Thursday’s road game against 16th-ranked Stanford, but the extra time couldn’t help the Bruins’ injury situation. UCLA will again be without three defensive starters when they face Stanford, which has won four in a row since its opening loss at Northwestern and boasts a dominant running attack that could wreak havoc against the Bruins.

Stanford, which is also coming off a bye, has won seven straight against UCLA and leads the Pac-12 North with a 3-0 mark. UCLA has lost defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes, cornerback Fabian Moreau and linebacker Myles Jack to season-ending injuries and will be hard-pressed to slow down Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey, who ranks second in the nation in all-purpose yards with 229.8 per game. Remound Wright has added seven rushing touchdowns for Stanford, which has scored 40 or more points in each of the last three games while rushing for 834 yards over that stretch. The Cardinal will look to carry that momentum into Thursday’s contest against UCLA, which had its offense slowed down for the first three quarters of a 38-23 loss to Arizona State on Oct. 3.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Stanford -6.5

ABOUT UCLA (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12): Paul Perkins has rushed for seven touchdowns and averages 115.4 yards on the ground, but the junior was held to 63 rushing yards against Arizona State. Freshman quarterback Josh Rosen has thrown nine touchdowns against five interceptions while showing a clear preference for receivers Jordan Payton and Thomas Duarte, who have combined to catch 23 passes for 375 yards and four scores over the last two games against the Arizona schools. The injury-depleted defense has allowed 545 rushing yards in the last two contests and needs a strong showing from linebackers Kenny Young and Deon Hollins to help contain McCaffrey.

ABOUT STANFORD (4-1, 3-0): After a rough outing against Northwestern, quarterback Kevin Hogan has bounced back to rank seventh in the NCAA in passing efficiency at 169.8 while completing 79 percent of his passes in the last three games. Stanford has scored at least 24 points in each of the past seven wins against the Bruins, and Hogan threw for 234 yards and two scores in last season’s 31-10 victory. Linebacker Blake Martinez had 13 tackles in Stanford’s 55-17 win over Arizona on Oct. 3 and leads the FBS with 12.6 tackles per game, but the defense is tied for 125th in the country in turnovers gained with three in five games.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The Bruins are 5-0 following a bye week under coach Jim Mora.

2. Stanford has won the time-of-possession battle in 10 of its past 11 games.

3. UCLA WR/DB Mossi Johnson will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury suffered last week at practice.

Preview: Mets at Dodgers

GAME: New York Mets (92-74) at Los Angeles Dodgers (94-72)
DATE/TIME: Thursday, October 15 - 8:00 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A
Playoff Series: Divisional Playoff; Series Tied 2-2

The Los Angeles Dodgers set things up so that Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke could each pitch twice in a five-game series, and now they’ll pin their hopes on the second of the two aces. Greinke will go up against Jacob deGrom when the Dodgers host the Mets in a decisive Game 5 of the National League Division Series on Thursday.

Kershaw allowed one run and three hits over seven innings in Game 4 to lead Los Angeles to a 3-1 win and get the series back to the west coast. “Definitely wanted to send this back to LA,” Kershaw told reporters. “I feel confident with Zack going in Game 5 back home, so really just wanted to push it.” The right-handed deGrom dominated Game 1 in Los Angeles, scattering five hits and striking out 13 over seven scoreless innings to best Kershaw, and has the confidence of his whole team. “There's a reason why we thought, 'hey, look, if we're up 2-1 in Game 4 that we're going to save (deGrom) because he's the guy we want on the mound,'” New York manager Terry Collins told reporters. “…And once again, this is a time when you need your guys to step up and you certainly think he'll do that.”

TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, TBS

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (0-0, 0.00 ERA), vs. Dodgers RH Zack Greinke (1-0, 2.57)

The 27-year-old deGrom waited until late in Game 4 to do his side work in case he was needed in the game but did not get into the contest and should be ready to go on full rest in Game 5. The 27-year-old has allowed a total of one run and 10 hits in 17 innings over his last three starts. DeGrom’s 13 strikeouts in Game 1 matched Tom Seaver’s franchise record for a playoff game.

Greinke carried over his outstanding work from the regular season into Game 2, when he yielded two runs – both on solo home runs – and five hits over seven innings to pick up the win. The Cy Young hopeful struck out eight without issuing a walk in that win and has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his last five starts. Greinke is 3-2 with a 3.48 ERA in eight career postseason starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets 3B David Wright is 1-for-12 with five strikeouts in the series.

2. Los Angeles 3B Justin Turner, who is 7-for-15 with four doubles in the series, left Game 4 with swelling in his knee and is day-to-day.

3. New York OFs Yoenis Cespedes and Michael Conforto each homered off Greinke in Game 2.

Preview: Atlanta at New Orleans

When: 8:25 PM ET, Thursday, October 15, 2015
Where: Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, Louisiana

Having mastered the art of the comeback, the undefeated Atlanta Falcons look to become the first team in the NFL to six wins when they visit the struggling New Orleans Saints on Thursday night in an NFC South matchup. Atlanta made history last week by becoming the first team to start 5-0 when trailing in the fourth quarter in four of those victories.

“Being 5-0 is just a real clear demonstration of how hard the guys all want to play for one another,” Falcons first-year coach Dan Quinn said. "I think it shows a lot of the character and the toughness of the men in the room." Atlanta escaped with a 25-19 win over Washington last week when cornerback Robert Alford returned an interception for a touchdown in overtime. The Saints registered a dramatic overtime victory of their own at home against Dallas on Oct. 4. The momentum was short-lived, however, as New Orleans was overwhelmed in a 39-17 loss at Philadelphia last week.

TV: 8:25 p.m. ET, CBS, NFL Network. LINE: Falcons -3. O/U: 51

ABOUT THE FALCONS (5-0): Devonta Freeman moved into the starting lineup when rookie running back Tevin Coleman suffered a rib injury in Week 2 and he hasn't looked back, becoming the first player in the Super Bowl era to rush for at least seven touchdowns in his first three career starts. After opening the season with three monster games and scoring four touchdowns, Falcons wideout Julio Jones has been kept in check over the past two games with only nine catches for 105 yards. Quarterback Matt Ryan looks to rebound from his worst game after throwing for 254 yards with two interceptions and a fumble.

ABOUT THE SAINTS (1-4): New Orleans allowed 29 unanswered points in last week's rout at Philadelphia and the league's worst defense (409.0 yards per game) was shredded for 34 first downs and 519 total yards. Quarterback Drew Brees, who sat out Week 3 while dealing with a bruised rotator cuff, threw for a pair of touchdowns and notched his third 300-yard game, but he was picked off once, lost a pair of fumbles and sacked five times. Starting running back Mark Ingram has yet to exceed 77 yards rushing, but wide receiver Willie Snead continues to be a pleasant surprise after hauling in six catches for 141 yards.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The Falcons are vying for consecutive wins in New Orleans for the first time since 2001-02.

2. Brees is 7-2 in his last nine home starts versus Atlanta.

3. Jones had 14 receptions for 223 yards as the Falcons swept the season series against the Saints in 2014.

Kentucky prepares for first Thursday home game in 76 years

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Kentucky has not hosted a Thursday football game in 76 years, so Wildcats players have had their nationally televised matchup with Auburn circled on their calendars for a while now.

While Kentucky had a weekend off to get ready the Southeastern Conference showdown, the Wildcats (4-1, 2-1 SEC) haven't beaten the Tigers (3-2, 0-2) at home since 1966. After upsetting then-No. 25 Missouri last month, Kentucky players believe this game can help define the program's quest for respectability.

The Wildcats' challenge is avoiding stage fright against an Auburn program unexpectedly facing urgency.

''We got caught up in the moment against Florida, and that didn't work out for us,'' Kentucky quarterback Patrick Towles said. ''If we take the same mentality that we did against Missouri, we'll have a good time and it'll be a good result.''

Kentucky seeks a second straight 5-1 start and enters its first Thursday night home game at Commonwealth Stadium with a two-game winning streak. Auburn is also coming off a bye as it seeks its first conference win following losses to LSU and Mississippi State.

The Tigers have dominated this series 25-6-1 and won eight straight in Lexington, including a 37-34 victory in 2010. That was the last season the Wildcats went to a bowl game, and they've made it clear their goal is getting back to postseason.

Auburn has the same mission, but what seemed like a given when the season started is now a must-win situation for the Tigers.

''I think they understand that it's a big game,'' Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. ''Our guys understand that we are playing a good team, a team that's played three SEC games and won two of them. We've got to be ready and play good football.''

---

Here are other things to watch when Kentucky hosts Auburn:

FROM GOAT TO GO-TO:

Since an early end-zone drop quickly switched momentum in Kentucky's loss to Florida, receiver Dorian Baker has become the Wildcats' clutch performer. After his touchdown catch in the back of the end zone forced overtime against Eastern Kentucky, he caught the game-winner to finish with a career bests of eight catches for 86 yards. His three TDs have come in the past two games.

QB COIN-FLIP:

Auburn's choice under center could be a game-time decision between redshirt freshman Sean White - who has started the past two contests - and junior Jeremy Johnson. Malzahn hinted at a package for both QBs, and linebacker Justin Garrett said the team is in good hands either way. ''Whoever gets out there is who we trust and who the team is going to rally behind,'' Garrett said.

BOOM IS BACK:

Leading rusher Stanley ''Boom'' Williams is back atop Kentucky's depth chart after missing the EKU game to deal with personal issues, and the sophomore's mission is improving a ground game that mustered just 55 yards in his absence. Williams leads Kentucky with 343 yards rushing and his return provides a speedy complement to hard-running Jojo Kemp. Coach Mark Stoops looks forward to seeing what Williams can do for the offense following his break and said this week, ''we are a lot better with him out there.''

RUN DEFENSE:

Both teams rank near the bottom in the SEC against the run, but last-place Auburn has struggled in particular under former Florida coach and first-year defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. The Tigers are yielding nearly 209.6 yards per game, nearly 40 more than the Wildcats (170.6).

STILL PERFECT:

Kentucky remains one of five teams to convert all of its chances inside the 20, having scored 12 touchdowns on 16 opportunities this season and 27 straight going back to last October.

Preview: Predators (3-0) at Islanders (1-1)

Date: October 15, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

John Tavares played a major role in the New York Islanders' first win in their new arena, and he has a bevy of recent success against the next visiting team.

The Nashville Predators, though, have used their defense to forge one of their best starts in franchise history and will try to remain stingy Thursday night in Brooklyn.

Tavares had a goal and two assists in a 4-2 victory over Winnipeg on Monday, and was denied on a penalty shot late in the third period. The Islanders opened with a pair of losses to Chicago, including a 3-2 overtime defeat in their Barclays Center debut Friday.

New York (1-1-1) is trying to take advantage of 10 home games in its first 15 contests.

"Certainly it's nice to get the first win here," Tavares said. "We felt better on the ice today. We want to take advantage of being home. It's still an adjustment every day but it's coming around."

Tavares has a goal in each of his last five games against Nashville and has an assist in each of the Islanders' three consecutive wins in the series. New York has never won four in a row over the Predators.

Defenseman Nick Leddy had two goals and three assists in last season's two victories. With his help, New York scored a combined nine goals on Vezina Trophy finalist Pekka Rinne in 2014-15.

Rinne has yielded just two so far in Nashville's 3-0-0 start. In his team-record 384th career appearance Tuesday, Rinne finished 1:41 shy of back-to-back shutouts in a 3-1 win over New Jersey, the opener to a three-game road trip.

"He's been great so far this year, like he was great last year," defenseman Roman Josi said. "It gives us extra confidence as a defensive unit, knowing he's back there and stopping everything. He's always there to make the save."

Josi scored two goals as the Predators matched their second-best start. They haven't opened 4-0-0 since winning eight in a row to begin 2005-06 and needed two shootouts in those first four games.

"It's a good thing to still have room for improvement even though we're still 3-0-0," Josi told the team's official website. "We know we can play better and we can work on those things. We'll have to practice on them and get better.

"The Islanders are a tough team; they have a lot of speed, so we'll have to be ready for them. We have to be better to get a win."

The Islanders have started Thomas Greiss in net in two of their first three games with Jaroslav Halak out due to an upper-body injury. Halak and defenseman Thomas Hickey, who also has an upper-body ailment, practiced Wednesday but it's unknown when either player will return to the ice.

Halak is considered day to day, and Hickey was initially expected to miss at least four weeks.

Greiss is 2-2-0 with a 3.23 goals-against average in four career starts against Nashville while Halak is 5-0-1 with a 1.81 GAA in his last six matchups.

The Predators' James Neal has 10 goals and eight assists in his last 15 regular-season games versus the Islanders, but he doesn't have a point so far this season.

New York is 5-1-1 in its last seven home contests against Nashville, including a 5-2 win Feb. 19.

Preview: Senators (2-1) at Penguins (0-3)

Date: October 15, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Ottawa Senators notched a decisive win in their latest game by taking advantage of a struggling goaltender.

They'll next face another winless club whose woes have surprisingly come on the other side of the ice despite a star-studded lineup.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will try to avoid opening with a fourth consecutive loss Thursday night against the visiting Senators.

Ottawa (3-1-0) scored five unanswered goals in a 7-3 victory over Columbus on Wednesday and got six pucks behind a beleaguered Sergei Bobrovsky, who has given up 18 goals in four games.

Erik Karlsson had a career-best four assists for the Senators while Bobby Ryan and Mika Zibanejad each provided a goal and two assists.

"I don't know if we played a really good 60 minutes, but we got away with a win and a lot of goals," Zibanejad said. "We've still got things to work on."

The Senators will try to match last season's 4-1-0 start while keeping the Penguins (0-3-0) from igniting their stagnant offense.

Pittsburgh has been outscored 8-3 with superstar Sidney Crosby failing to register a point in his first three games for the first time. He had four goals and three assists in his first three contests in 2014-15, and nine points in his first four.

Patric Hornqvist and Chris Kunitz also have zero points. Evgeni Malkin has just one assist while new forward Phil Kessel has a team-best two points.

Kessel scored his first goal for the Penguins in a 2-1 loss in Arizona on Saturday and assisted on Kris Letang's tying goal in his home debut Tuesday against Montreal. Pittsburgh, though, was held off the scoreboard in the final 29 minutes in a 3-2 defeat.

"You have to find ways when you're 0-3," Crosby said after the opener to a season-high five-game homestand. "If your desperation and urgency isn't there, then there's a problem."

Off to their worst start since beginning 0-4-5 in 2005-06, the Penguins haven't opened with four consecutive regulation losses since 2001-02.

Pittsburgh is 10-2-2 in its last 14 versus Ottawa, including a five-game victory in the 2013 Eastern Conference semifinals. The Penguins went 2-0-1 in last season's series and are 6-0-1 in their last seven home matchups, including the postseason.

Crosby had three goals and two assists in the three 2014-15 matchups, and Malkin scored three times. Kessel's 25 goals and 50 points against Ottawa are his most versus any opponent, but the former Toronto forward has no goals and four assists in his last six meetings.

With Craig Anderson starting Wednesday, the Senators might give Andrew Hammond his first action this season. The "Hamburglar," who went 20-1-2 with a 1.79 goals-against average in 2014-15, was dealing with a groin injury.

Hammond was in net for Ottawa's only victory in last season's series, a 4-3 overtime win April 7. He gave up all three goals in the first 15 minutes before settling down.

Penguins netminder Marc-Andre Fleury has won in each of his last five home starts against Ottawa while posting a 1.79 GAA.

Kyle Turris, among the league's early leaders with four goals, has six scores and four assists in his last 10 games against Pittsburgh, including the postseason. Mark Stone has four goals in three career regular-season matchups.

Preview: Blackhawks (2-2) at Capitals (1-1)

Date: October 15, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The season's first week has been a mixed bag for the Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks, though both will be looking for an offensive spark after suffering shutouts ahead of Thursday night's meeting in D.C.

Washington has to like its chances to rebound with Alex Ovechkin back in the mix.

The Capitals (1-1-0) opened a four-game homestand with a 5-3 win over New Jersey, then lost 5-0 to San Jose on Tuesday without Ovechkin. Ovechkin said Wednesday he overslept and arrived late for the team's morning skate, and was held out as punishment.

"I just messed up with my alarm clock ... made a mistake," said Ovechkin, who has four goals and three assists in his last five meetings with Chicago. "We talked. We have a conversation. It's (the) rules."

Ovechkin scored a goal and assisted on another in the opener. While the Capitals actually generated four more shots (31) without him Tuesday, they failed to score on four power plays after scoring twice on five chances against the Devils.

Washington was shut out only four times last season, including once in the first 48 games.

"We could have used him (Tuesday), and he's a great player," Trotz said. "He's our captain. He's our leader but we didn't have him today."

The Capitals are already without Nicklas Backstrom, who led the league with 60 assists last season but was only cleared for contact this week following offseason hip surgery. There's no timetable for his return.

Chicago (2-2-0) lost 3-0 at Philadelphia on Wednesday despite 30 shots and five power plays. The Blackhawks scored twice on 10 total power plays in back-to-back wins against the New York Islanders.

They also spent a large portion of Wednesday's contest killing off penalties, however, conceding six power plays with one score. Chicago had only been charged with 10 penalty minutes in its first three games prior to a performance coach Joel Quenneville called "brutal."

"We took some careless penalties and gave them some momentum," Quenneville said. "They had pace and we stood around and watched for the majority of the game."

The Blackhawks were shut out eight times last season.

Patrick Kane was scoreless on four shots after recording three goals in the previous two games. It remains to be seen if he'll be jeered by another road crowd after Islanders and Flyers fans directed chants at him referencing the fact that he's being investigated for an alleged sexual assault in western New York. No charges have been filed.

Jonathan Toews has four goals and four assists in seven career meetings with Washington while Marian Hossa has three goals and nine assists in his last 11 matchups.

The Capitals have won three straight and six of eight in the series, as well as four in a row at home.

Washington hasn't been shut out in two straight games since March 2 and 4, 2012, against New Jersey and Philadelphia. Chicago was blanked last season at San Jose and Minnesota, Jan. 31 and Feb. 3.

Scott Darling, who has never faced the Capitals, is likely to make his second start of the season in net. He stopped 28 shots in Saturday's 4-1 win against New York.

Preview: Sabres (1-2) at Panthers (2-1)

Date: October 15, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

Jack Eichel's arrival has the Buffalo Sabres buzzing over a very promising future, while Aaron Ekblad and the Florida Panthers are showing early signs of already coming of age.

The two teenage stars go head-to-head for the first time as professionals when their teams face off Thursday night.

Ekblad gave the Panthers all they could hope for during a banner rookie season that earned the 2014 No. 1 overall pick the Calder Trophy and helped Florida to a 25-point improvement over the previous campaign. The up-and-coming Panthers have looked ready to take another step forward by outscoring their opponents 11-3 over a 2-1-0 stretch to begin 2015-16.

The Panthers set a modern era record with four goals in the first 6:41 of Saturday's 7-1 season-opening rout of Philadelphia, then struck three times in the third period of Tuesday's 4-1 win at Carolina to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat to the Flyers the previous night.

Connor Brickley's first NHL goal snapped a 1-1 tie with 7:42 remaining and Aleksander Barkov scored 50 seconds later to help seal the outcome.

"That's how you have a successful team, when everybody's chipping in from your first line to your fourth line and your defense," Panthers head coach Gerard Gallant said. "It was a good team effort (Tuesday) and I was happy with the performance."

Florida has indeed gotten contributions throughout the lineup, with four players recording two goals and six posting at least three points through three games. Among the multi-goal scorers is 43-year-old Jaromir Jagr, one of several veterans the Panthers have brought in over the past two seasons to aid their young core of Ekblad, Barkov and forwards Jonathan Huberdeau and Nick Bjugstad.

Eichel has so far lived up to the immense hype surrounding the 2015 No. 2 overall choice's entry into the league. The 18-year-old center has two goals through his initial three games, including the game-winner in the third period of Tuesday's 4-2 home victory over Columbus.

Buffalo (1-2-0) added three power-play goals to help Dan Bylsma garner his first win as the team's head coach. Four of its six goals have come in man-advantage situations, an area where the Sabres converted at a league-low 13.4 percent clip while finishing last in the NHL with 54 points.

'I thought we earned the win,' Bylsma said. 'They had to battle for every inch, we were hard to play against, I think we gave them a lot to handle.'

Chad Johnson registered 22 saves in his second start in place of Robin Lehner, out 6 to 10 weeks with a high ankle sprain sustained in the Oct. 8 opener.

The Sabres are expected to have captain Brian Gionta, sidelined the first three games by a lower-body injury, in the lineup after he skated on a line with Eichel and Evander Kane during Wednesday's practice.

Roberto Luongo, who's stopped 70 of 72 shots through his first two starts, will be back in goal for Florida after Al Montoya made 22 saves Tuesday. Luongo had a 1.25 goals-against average and two shutouts while winning all four 2014-15 meetings with the Sabres.

Florida is 7-0-1 in its last eight against Buffalo, which has lost three straight at BB&T Center since a 3-1 win on Oct. 25, 2013.

Preview: Stars (2-1) at Lightning (3-1)

Date: October 15, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

The Dallas Stars were one of the NHL's best road teams last season, but their only clunker to begin 2015-16 came away from home.

Dallas begins a four-game trip Thursday night against a Tampa Bay Lightning squad that should be excited to get back on home ice.

The Stars (2-1-0) missed the playoffs for the sixth time in seven seasons in 2014-15 despite tying for the third-most road victories in the league with 24 and having the Art Ross Trophy winner in Jamie Benn.

They beat visiting Pittsburgh 3-0 in last Thursday's season opener before blowing a two-goal lead in Saturday's 6-3 loss at Colorado. Dallas bounced back with Tuesday's 4-2 home win over Edmonton as Jason Spezza recorded his sixth career hat trick.

The Stars finished with 52 shots, their most since firing 55 in a 3-3 tie with Los Angeles on Nov. 8, 1995.

"Credit to all the zone time we had," Spezza said. "It felt like we had the puck a lot. Sometimes it follows you a little more. The power play we moved around pretty good. We didn't score a power-play goal, but we got good looks."

Benn added a goal for the Stars, who also face Florida, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh on its trip.

Kari Lehtonen made 26 saves in his season debut Tuesday after backing up Antti Niemi, while 2013 first-round pick Valeri Nichushkin was a healthy scratch because of a slow start. Lehtonen is 1-2-0 with a 3.41 goals-against average against the Lightning over the last two seasons.

"(Tuesday) was pretty much a blueprint for how you want to play," coach Lindy Ruff said. "You're pretty hard-pressed to make any changes when you dominate a game in that fashion."

Ruff will be forced to make at least one lineup adjustment, though, after Patrick Eaves suffered a lower-body injury that's "not just a day-to-day thing," according to Ruff. The Stars recalled Curtis McKenzie from the AHL on Wednesday to replace Eaves.

McKenzie should make his season debut against the Lightning, who return home after playing three road games in four nights. Tampa Bay (3-1-0) concluded the trip with Tuesday's 3-1 loss to Detroit.

Fatigue could have been a factor after the Lightning scored 13 goals while winning their first three. Coach Jon Cooper felt his club looked sluggish, with Ryan Callahan scoring the only goal 11:03 into the third period.

"(The Red Wings) hit the corners and we didn't," Cooper said. "They made big-time shots, and that's what you have to do against good goalies."

Ben Bishop made 21 saves and has started each game for Tampa, which plays seven of its first 10 on the road. He hasn't faced the Stars since Benn scored twice in Dallas' 5-2 victory April 5, 2014, and it's unclear if Cooper will decide to give his goaltender a rest.

Regular backup Andrei Vasilevskiy is expected to be out until later this month after having vascular surgery, leaving Kevin Poulin, who played in one NHL game last season, as the only other option.

The Lightning have won five of the last six meetings with Dallas, including both last season. Tyler Johnson scored twice in a 5-3 victory Feb. 5 before Tampa overcame two goals apiece from Vernon Fiddler and Tyler Seguin in a 5-4 win March 7.
