Thursday's NFL preseason betting previews

Cincinnati Bengals at New England Patriots (-7, 36.5 )

Starter/Injury report

Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer will be held out of action with a mild ankle injury. He was sharp in last week's preseason opener against the Saints. Palmer led the Bengals into New Orleans territory in three of his four drives with the first-team offense.

The defense held Drew Brees and the Saints offense to just a single first down in the opening 15 minutes before yielding a touchdown drive early in the second quarter.

Another Palmer will still be taking the majority of snaps at quarterback in Thursday's contest. Carson's brother, Jordan, is expected to play the final two and a half quarters against New England following starter J.T. O' Sullivan. The duo combined to complete 16-of-22 pass attempts against the Saints.

Cincinnati is still without the services of its top draft choice Andre Smith. The club is trying to hammer out a deal with the offensive lineman.

Tom Brady showed little rust in his return to the field at Philadelphia last week. He directed a pair of long touchdown drives while playing nearly the entire first half for the Pats. While the defense allowed a couple of long drives to Donovan McNabb and the Eagles offense, the unit forced Philadelphia to settle for a pair of field goals instead of touchdowns.

Without a championship since 2004, Pats head coach Bill Belichick has cracked the whip harder than usual this preseason. The Patriots participated in full pads for 18 of their 27 training camp practice outings.

On Thursday, Brady is once again expected to play extended minutes against the Bengals. Former Jaguars star RB Fred Taylor and wideout Wes Welker are expected to make their preseason debuts after being held out last week. Andrew Walter (5-of-9 passing against Eagles) and Kevin O'Connell will handle the quarterbacking duties in the second half.

Line movement

The Patriots opened as 4.5-point favorites with a total of 37.5. New England is now favored by a touchdown while the total is down to 36.5.

Trends

Marvin Lewis is 12-13 (13-11-1 ATS) in the preseason. As head coach of the Patriots, Belichick is 21-17 (20-15-3 ATS) in exhibition action.

Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 83 degrees with a 30 percent chance of rain in Foxboro, MA.

Philadelphia Eagles at Indianapolis Colts (+3, 36.5)

Starter/Injury report

The Eagles will have to wait another week before getting Michael Vick into game action. With No. 2 QB Kevin Kolb still nursing a minor knee injury, Philly's QB lineup is a little scrambled.

Head coach Andy Reid has said that Donovan McNabb and the starters will play the entire first half against the Colts. A.J. Feely will start the second half and rookie Adam DiMichele could get into the contest in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles are still banged up with several players not making the trip due to injuries. Among the players staying behind are defensive end Trent Cole, cornerback Sheldon Brown, guard Todd Herremans, defensive end Darren Howard, tackle Jason Peters, tackle Shawn Andrews and guard Stacy Andrews. Star running back Brian Westbrook is unlikely to play during the entire preseason after some offseason surgeries.

A new head coach did little to change the Colts’ status as a weak preseason squad. Jim Caldwell's club dropped their exhibition opener to the visiting Minnesota Vikings by a final of 13-3.

The starting defense promptly allowed a 72-yard TD drive by the Vikings to begin the game. The first-team offense was just as bad. In his only series of the evening, Peyton Manning was sacked three times. First-round draft choice Donald Brown was the lone bright spot on offense against Minnesota. He gained 58 yards on five carries and his 38-yard burst in the second quarter led to Indy's only score of the night.

The Colts will also be without their No.2 quarterback Thursday. Jim Sorgi is still out of action with a hamstring injury. Others out for Thursday's game due to injuries include safety Antoine Bethea, cornerback Kelvin Hayden, defensive end Raheem Brock and defensive end Robert Mathis.

Manning and the starters will see more action this week but the Colts will still be relying on a pair of rookies at quarterback for most of the night. Curtis Painter (10-of-17 passing vs. Vikings) and Chris Crane will be under center when the game is on the line in the second half.

Line movement

The Eagles opened as 1-point favorites with the total set at 36.5. Philadelphia has moved up to a field goal choice in the matchup.

Trends

Reid is 14-27 (19-22 ATS) in his preseason career at Philadelphia. The Colts are 3-16 (5-13-1 ATS) in their last 19 preseason games.

Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers Total
8½ un-115 at BOOKM > 10h.
1* Take the Detroit Tigers Under 8.5, Jarrod Washburn (8-7, 2.95 ERA) has pitched solid overall this season and I look for him to have a good start against his old team Thursday afternoon. Ryan Rowland-Smith (2-1, 3.60 ERA) has allowed 6 hits or less in 3 straight starts and he allowed just 3 hits in his last start which was against a very potent Yankees line-up while lasting 7 innings. The O/U is 1-5 in the Mariners last 6 road games when facing a left hand starter and the O/U is also 7-16 over Washburn's 23 starts this season. The Mariners were averaging just 2.9 rpg over their last 7 games before last night's game while the Tigers were hitting just .225 as a team and averaging just 3.9 rpg. Take the Under as my MLB Bonus Play for Thursday afternoon since I look for a pitchers dual at Comerica Park.

Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets New York Mets
-127 at BOOKM > 16h.
On Thursday the Bonus Play is on the Newyork Mets.Game 958 at 7:10 eastern. The Mets qualify in a big system which has not been active all that much. However it has cashed at an extremely high rate. What we want to do is play on certain home favorites off a home loss as a dog of +140 or higher if they scored 2 or less runs and tonights opponent scored 10 or more runs on 10+ hits. These home favs hit the ground running after getting blown out the night before. The Mets were done in on Wednesday early when B.Parnell allowed 8 runs in the second inning. The Mets were able to get by in this one without blowing out any of their better relievers as the long men finished up.Tonight the Mets have their ace going in J.Santana.He is the best pitcher statistically in the second half over the last seven years. The Mets have a solid chance in any game he pitches regardless of who is on the field behind him.Santana has a solid 2.32 home era this year and has allowed 2 earned runs in over 20+ innings vs the Braves, good for a 1.96 era.The Braves send K.Kawakami to the mound tonight and he has a 4.92 road era which is over 2 full runs higher than Santanas home era.The Mets have performed well at home off a loss with Santana on the hill since aquiring him.Look for the Mets to bounce back and get the win here.On Thursdays card I have a 5 unit totals play going from a 24-3 totals system. One of the strongest I have. The Thursday card is the deepest Ive seen all week.Jump on and cash out with some high end plays. For the Bonus Play take the Mets.Bol RV-

St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Diego Padres Total
7½ un-109 at 5DIMES > 19h.
San Diego, the worst offense in baseball, was on a 6-0 run over the total. That was all on the road, however. When they came home, what happened? A game going under the total, 4-1 against the Cubs. Petco is a huge park, tough to score runs in. St. Louis comes to town on a long road trip and each starter this game knows how to throw strikes. Joel Pineiro has just 16 walks on the season in 155 innings, and only 1 his last three starts! Tim Stauffer of San Diego has a 3.50 ERA and a solid 31-12 K to walk ratio. Don't look for many runs, play the Cardinals/Padres under the total.

LAA Angels vs. Cleveland Indians LAA Angels
-147 at 5DIMES > 16h.

LAA -147: The Angels are the hottest team on the planet and just can't stay away from them today. Also have hot pitcher Lackey going today as he has won 7 of his last 10 starts only giving up more than 3 runs once. On the other hand CLE has Masterson starting for them today. This will be his 4th appearance since coming to CLE and he has given up 7 runs in 10 innings. Not good news for CLE as LAA have been scoring in bunches for a month now. LAA have Vlad back healthy and he can only help them keep up their hot streak. EASY WINNER. SCORE: LAA 6 - CLE 2

(967) BOSTON RED SOX
(968) TORONTO BLUE JAYS
Take "(968) TORONTO BLUE JAYS"

At 7:05 pm, our complimentary selection is on the Toronto Blue Jays over the Boston Red Sox. Granted, Jon Lester is a fine pitcher, and he's also in super form, with a 2.37 ERA over his last three games, with a 1.00 WHIP. But he'll be opposing a tough, young hurler in Brett Cecil, who has a 3.44 ERA over his last three games, to go along with a 1.20 WHIP. Boston has also been scuffling along in the 2nd half of the season, with just a .500 win percentage, and it has a poor 15-29 record on artificial turf since the 2008 season. Take the Blue Jays. Good luck, as always...Al McMordie.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

Florida Marlins at Houston Astros (+100, 7.5)

The Florida Marlins might be the best bad team in baseball. The Houston Astros might be the worst good team in baseball.

Not much seems to make sense between these clubs, but the bottom line is that the Marlins are in the hunt for the National League Wild Card berth as well as the NL East race despite having the league’s worst attendance and lowest payroll.

The Astros have long dropped out of playoff contention despite a starting staff that boasts two aces in Roy Oswalt and Thursday’s starter Wandy Rodriguez, and a potent lineup that includes Miguel Tejada, Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee.

Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez says his young team remains in the race because of the way it copes with its inconsistency.

“It’s a matter of the culture in the clubhouse,” Gonzalez told reporters. “We have a good group of guys. There are no curds in the buttermilk.”

The Marlins had won seven of their last eight games against the Astros and 10 of 12 overall heading into Wednesday’s action. Houston’s Rodriguez gave up 10 runs in his last start against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pick: Marlins -112

Seattle Mariners at Detroit Tigers (-155, 8.5)

The Detroit Tigers continue to show that they are dedicated to making a run at the postseason. The Seattle Mariners continue to show ambivalence.

The predictable result: the Tigers are in the hunt for AL Central crown, while the improved Mariners have faded from view in the AL West.

The Tigers made another move by acquiring veteran left-handed slugger Aubrey Huff from the Baltimore Orioles to add another weapon to their lineup.

“We’re doing what we can to win,” Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said.

The Mariners, who are relegated to extreme long-shot status for the AL wild card, couldn’t seem to decide whether they were buyers or sellers at the All-Star break.
They settled on something in between. They dealt ace Jarrod Washburn to the Tigers, and will now face their former arm Thursday.

Seattle made no major moves to improve its club, although it did acquire slumping third baseman Bill Hall from the Brewers Wednesday. However, it’s unlikely Hall will make much of a difference to Seattle’s chances this year.

Pick: Tigers -155

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Brett Cecil, Toronto Blue Jays

The 23-year-old lefty has been a welcome surprise for Toronto’s starting staff, posting a 3-0 record with two no-decisions in his past five starts.

Cecil (5-1, 4.35 ERA) has given up just seven total earned runs in this span, which included a 13-inning scoreless streak during consecutive wins over the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians.

Joel Pineiro, St. Louis Cardinals

On a staff noted for overachieving, Pineiro has gone from journeyman to overlooked ace in the St. Louis rotation.

Pineiro (11-9, 3.25 ERA) is 5-0 with a pair of no-decisions in his past seven outings. He has given up three runs or fewer six times in this streak, which includes back-to-back wins over the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres.

The 30-year-old right-hander also has gone at least six innings in five of his previous seven trips to the hill.

Slumping

Aaron Harang, Cincinnati Reds

Although Harang’s future in the Reds’ starting rotation might be uncertain, his reservation in the “slumping” column appears to be in no immediate jeopardy.

We hate to consistently pick on one guy, but it’s hard to overlook everything that ails the hard-throwing righty.

Harang (6-14. 4.35 ERA) is 1-6 in his past seven starts. He has given up at least four earned runs in four of those contests and has yielded a minimum of six hits in all of them.

On the bright side, Harang had perhaps his best outing of the season when he held the Giants to just two runs during his lone win in this span. However, he followed it up with a loss to the Washington Nationals.

Anthony Swarzak, Minnesota Twins

The rookie impressed the Twins’ brass by winning his Major League Baseball debut. But it’s been pretty much downhill since.

The 23-year-old right-hander is 1-3 with a no-decision in his past five starts. Swarzak (3-6, 5.87 ERA) has lost his last three decisions, while giving up 16 earned runs and failing to get past the fourth inning in any of those contests.

Marc Lawrence MLB Bonus Play! - Thursday 8/20
Play On: L.A. Angels w/Lackey vs Masterson

Note: The Angels conclude their 3-game visit Thursday night when they send John Lackey to the mound against Justin Masterson and the Indians at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Lackey enters tonight fray with wins in each of his last 4 team starts against the Tribe. He's also cashed in 17 of his last 20 team starts on Thursdays. With Masterson 1-5 in his last 6 home team start with a 6.47 ERA, look for Lackey and the Halos to hang on on the Indians here tonight.

Winner on the Cards-Dodgers UNDER the total last night. Now 20-8-1 the last 29 days for free.

Normally, we would take the UNDER with Johan Santana on the hill, but the way the runs have been piling up at Citi Field in this Braves-Mets series, we have a feeling this small total is going to be eclipsed before tonight's 9 innings are through.

Both games in this 3 game set have landed in the OVER column, and Atlanta has now played HIGH in each of their last 3 games, while the Mets have also played OVER in 3 in a row, and 5 of their last 7.

Series numbers show 4 of the 5 meetings this year in New York landing in the OVER column, and both Kawakami and Santana did allow a few runs to score in their last assignments.

Kawakami gave up 3 runs in his 6 frames of work, while Santana has allowed 9 runs in his last 15 innings at home.

Very small total tonight, and with the way the hitters have been ruling the roost through the first 2 games in this series, we must side with the percentages, and play the OVER yet again tonight.

Braves-Mets land HIGH.

Tonight's FREE winner comes from the Big Apple as I love the Mets in this one, hosting the Braves.

Don't pay any attention to the 15-2 loss the Mets suffered on Wednesday, that won't keep left-handed ace Johan Santana (13-8, 3.10 ERA) from going out and delivering a gem for them tonight.

Even in this disaster of a season for New York, Santana has been a bright spot. He's 8-2 at home with a 2.32 ERA and the team has managed to win four of his last seven. The southpaw has looked dominant against the Braves twice this season, allowing a combined two runs (zero earned) in 13.1 innings against Atlanta.

On the other side, erratic Kenshin Kawakami (5-9, 4.13) is going for the Braves. He is just 3-5 away from home with a 4.92 ERA and the Braves have lost four of his last six outings. He's faced New York twice this season and given up a combined four runs on 13 hits in 11.2 innings as the Mets have won both games, 4-3 and 5-1.

New York is on runs of 14-6 when Santana pitches at home, 13-6 when he's a home favorite and 5-0 when he goes on Thursday. Meanwhile the Braves are just 19-43 on the road against teams with losing records and 2-7 when Kawakami faces a team with a losing record.

Go ahead and lay the chalk and play Santana and the Mets in this one.

G-Man is on a 23-18 comp play run heading into Thursday's action.

Tonight, look for the Marlins to handle their business with the Astros, and leave Minute Maid with another series win over Houston.

Last week, Florida won 3 of the 4 meetings against the Astros, and a win tonight will make it 2 of 3 in this series.

Expect it to happen, as Josh Johnson is a candidate for the NL Cy Young award, and does bring in a 12-2 record with a season ERA of 2.85.

Johnson has won back-to-back starts, allowing just 2 earned runs in his last 13 innings of work.

His counterpart Wandy Rodriguez has emerged as the Houston "ace' this year, but is fresh off a puzzling 10 runs allowed in just 4 innings of work in a home loss to Milwaukee.

Florida is still 10-3 their last 13 games, and they have also won 7 of the last 9 meetings against Houston.

Take the Marlins behind the strong pitching of Johnson to get the win.

Let's take the road team in this one, as it's starting to get real bad down in Los Angeles, and now Joe Torre has the audacity to send one of the most disappointing pitchers in the game to the hill.

Not buying it, and will roll with the Cubbies to get things done tonight.

I'll have more to say about this one by 4 p.m. eastern
