Everybody got different perceptions on what a "thug" is.........IMO, a "thug" acts alot more on emotion and very quick to react in the street whereas a "gangsta" has a greater ability to use their mind along with organizational skills to achieve their goals and seen as more of a street leader......That said, some think of "gangsta" and think street gangs so it really depends on perception of each person...I would call them "gangbangers" if they were in a street gang instead of "gangsta" which is more of a leadership type of position in my opinion that could apply to many different sectors.
