HOME TEAM IN CAPS
All games include OT unless stated otherwise
EDMONTON -½ +1.27 over Colorado (Reg)
EDMONTON/Colorado over 5½ -1.18
The Av’s allowed five goals to the defensive minded Bruins in their opener at home and now they’ll travel to Western Canada for the much-anticipated home opener of the offensively gifted Oilers. Edmonton was an exciting team last year with a slew of talented and quick young players and this year they’ll be even better. They added Erik Cole from the Canes and Lubomir Visnovsky from the Kings, two guys with tremendous offensive upside. They also added Gilbert Brule from the Jackets and he, too, is an offensive threat. There is just a ton of offense on the Oilers and they should be able to score three or more here with no problem at all, thus assuring us of at least a split. The Av’s can score too but defensively they’re a team with a lot of flaws that gives up a ton of scoring chances and they don’t have the goaltending to compensate. Two wagers here. Play: Edmonton -½ +1.27 (Risking 2 units). Play: Edmonton/Colorado over 5½ (Risking 2.36 units to win 2).
Phoenix +1.71 over ANAHEIM
Definite overlay here, as the Coyotes should not be this large a pooch this early in the year. They came out strong last night in a 3-1 win over the Jackets and had they not run into some hot goaltending the score would have been worse. Olli Jokinen and Kyle Turris played like they’ve been together for five years. These Coyotes are going to be tough to beat almost every night and this night should be no different. What ailed the Ducks last season ailed them again in their opener when they spent way too much time in the penalty box. Anaheim has led the league in penalty minutes each of the past two seasons and that’s an on-going problem. The Ducks were out-shot 21-3 in the second period of their opening 4-1 loss to the Sharkies. The Coyotes are a live dog in this one and with a take-back like this they’re a must play. Play: Phoenix +1.71 (Risking 2 units).
