(Sports Network) - New York Mets righthander Pedro Martinez aims to continue his dominance of the Seattle Mariners, as the teams resume a three-game series tonight at Safeco Field.
Martinez has stymied the Mariners, holding a incredible 13-0 mark along with a miniscule ERA of 1.30. In 97 innings against Seattle, Martinez has allowed only 14 runs while recording 130 strikeouts and just 24 walks. He has a spectacular 6-0 record with a 0.77 ERA (4 ER, 47 IP) at Safeco Field. He's also unbeaten on the road this year, going 4-0 with a 2.43 ERA in five games.
Martinez has been everything the Mets have hoped for this season, losing just once while leading the NL with a 107 strikeouts. In his last start, a 4-3 Mets to the Angels, the three-time Cy Young Award winner tossed seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Martinez finished with just three strikeouts and four walks, but did not figure in the decision.
As for the Mariners, they will send Ryan Franklin to the hill tonight. Franklin, who has lost four of his last five starts, has struggled mightily this season, posting just two victories in 14 games (12 starts). In his last start, a 3-2 loss to Washington this past Sunday, the 32-year-old allowed three runs on six hits in five innings.
Franklin has not pitched well at Safeco Field this season, posting a 0-4 mark with a 5.74 ERA in seven games (five starts). In his only career start against the Mets, Franklin last seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits en route to the loss.
Last night, Jamie Moyer threw 7 2/3 strong innings and Ichiro Suzuki homered and drove in four runs to lead the Mariners to a 5-0 win. Moyer allowed only six hits, struck out one and walked three for the Mariners, who have won three of four. The veteran lefthander retired 11 straight at one point, picking up just his second win in nine starts.
Suzuki ended 3-for-4, cracking a three-run homer, for Seattle, which earned its third shutout in June. Jose Lopez, who was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma prior to the game and made his season debut, added two hits and an RBI.
David Wright had three of the six hits for the Mets, who have dropped seven of nine and have scored only two runs in three setbacks during their current 12- game road trip.
Kaz Ishii (1-6) suffered his third straight setback, surrendering five runs, three earned, on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. The lefthander also struck out five and walked one for New York, which is 1-3 on its current road swing.
Seattle improved to 3-1 versus the Mets in interleague games, outscoring New York 25-1 in the three wins.
