Former Edmonton Oilers goalie Jussi Markkanen's 4-year-old son Oli-matias fell out of a Moscow apartment window and died Tuesday, the Edmonton Journal reports.

Markkanen, who now plays for CSKA in the KHL, had brought his family to join him in Moscow just a couple weeks ago, according to the report. Oli-matias apparently was playing with his younger brother when he climbed onto a window sill then fell.

Markkanen played five seasons with the Oilers and was a goalie in Helsinki last season before returning to the Russian league, where he played during the 2004-05 lockout season.

what a terrible week it has been for atheletes and kids.

heartbreaking.

Awful awful story, but when you think of it, there are probably 3,000 athletes from the major sports, these are bound to happen as it happens to every community.

No point here and do not mean to minimize the death at all

Biggammer,

sometimes I feel silly posting these coz i know that thousands of kids die every day due to accidents, starvation and whatever other horrors face our kids in this world.

But at the end of the day this is a sports forum, which is why I post them here.

Hopefully someone is recognizing other tragedies in other places.

That was the reason for my post, tragedy is tragedy no matter what the kids dad does for a living.

PS totally off topic, you should see (dont know where) ABC Nightline did a piece last night about Evangelicals who save kids from some Amazonian Tribe that dig graves to kill kids who are disabled in any way.

There was one girl who some Christian woman said she saved when the girl was left to die a slow death because, this is the exact words "the tribe said she didnt have a normal soul, she had a monkey soul"

Unreal that there are tribes still living in the Jungles with zero concept of the modern world and medicine.
They arent murderers they claim because they "think" they have no choice but to kill these kids .(the girl was treated at a normal hospital and is fully healthy)

Sad, I can't imagine what that family is going through. Kinda makes me sick to my stomach.

The family is probably wondering why the fuck they're such bad parents. I have a 4-year old and he's very, very busy. We can't take our eyes off of him at all.

If you live on the fourth floor of an apartment building and the window opens you must know and account for that as his parent. This tragedy is something that could and should've been avoided. I place full blame (won't bring him back) squarely on the shoulders of his parents.
