Thoughts and Opinions on Wilmington, NC?

I have never been to Wilmington, NC. Trying to get an idea for the area. Anyone live there or been there tell me their thoughts? Always looking for a place to move, but want to be sure we are picking right spot.

Great coastal town. Has a large Coast Guard presence. A smaller state university. Nice beaches nearby. A "big" small city w/ a nice downtown. Not much bad to say about it.

Great area. It's like the city of raleigh but on the water. Close to great beaches, but when you're downtown you'd never really know it.

Only spent a few days there, in Atlantic Beach or something like that but my impression was that it is an exceptionally nice area. People were very friendly and scenery beautiful. Jeff Gordon had a car lot there, Dawson's Creek was filmed there and I'd definitely recommend an extended visit to "audition" it as retirement cuz its definitely got serious potential to be a "hidden jewel".

Several sections of South & North Carolina, like this.....people do not give them enough consideration as retirement spots.

I'd recommend retiring to somewhere outside of USA though, I'd study the least expensive places then go "audition" those.

Not compared to OBX and Myrtle Beach. I did not find it to be overwhelmed by Tourists, and I was there during Peak Season.

Figure 8 island is where you want to be, as that is where my beach house is and where as im typeing this at now, plus a great yacht club on the island, next year we have the pga coming to eagle point on the island

how are the HIGH schools?

yes it come with a price tage but a great spot to get away, as for the schools i have no kids so that i cant help you with, i know they are building a new middle school right before you go past secuity to get on the island

All of the Islands are Super Expensive. They are ISLANDS, they are not attached to America (NC, GA, SC etc.), don't get distracted unless money is not a consideration. "SEA ISLAND" and shit like that, Hilton Head but just more exclusive.

What was the first or major thing that brought Wilmington into consideration?

Just curious because living in this area(3.5 hrs or less from there), it doesn't even come up to most as places to visit, much less move to and start over and live.

Because we want to be on the coast and feel our best bet is NC/SC area due to the weather we are looking for. It came up by default, as we have ruled out some other places. Have you been before?

I wish money was not a factor, but it is.

I'lll look but I am gonna guess it is going to be too pricey for us.
