The University of Illinois said Friday that it will finally release records of Barack Obama’s service to a nonprofit organization linked to former 1960s radical William Ayers. The records will be released next Tuesday, coincidentally at the start of the DNC convention.

so that the sentence would read "The truth is that the two men worked closely together for years, following a point that began several months before that 1995 fundraiser."

One sentence reads well and the other doesn't read well at all.
