Would disagree. However, last few years there is becoming a rift between the two 'hardcore' fan bases. Personally I think it's directly because espn has shunned the nhl, and many hockey fans have become defensive about it, while nba people have become dismissive of the nhl.

I do believe more NHL fans are NBA fans than vice versa. Everyone had played basketball, not many have played hockey.
