How can everyone make baseball plays early in the morning/day, when the starting lineups arent released until about an hour before the first pitch.... someone please explain that to me.... there are key players for certain teams getting the day off you dont know about until right before game time.... it doesnt make sense how people can make plays so early.... anyone agree? disagree?

Does make sense, however some ppl, like myself, are at work during the day and I can only place my bets during lunch. As I'm on the West Coast, games start at 4pm so there is no way to play after work. Therefore, I am forced to post/play early as a result.

does the same applies for bookies? I mean that it does not make sense to release odds by books early, if line-ups are announced just hour or so before 1st pitch? :howdy:

Yes, that doesnt make sense either.... how do the books post a line without knowing who's in or out??? i mean they want the action, so they are forced to.. but how can you make a play without knowing whos in? In Broncos case, he has no other option which makes sense, but for a lot of people who have the time or can make the play whenever they want to, wouldnt it make more sense to see the starting lineups before you throw loot around?

Funny,

I think you pose a great question...

A lot of guys follow very particular systems when they make their selections which most of the time don't necessarily factor into the starting lineup of each team. More important factors are usually past trends and statistics on the starting pitchers.

Over and above this... a lot of guys that follow baseball religously simply bet on hunches and what they know about each team they are betting on.

Aside from the starting pitchers I honestly find it to be a marginal difference if a lineup is missing a big bat or two all of a sudden. Maybe for OVER/UNDER bets this might not be true.

I think the bottom line is that the vast percentage of baseball bettors focus on the past performance of the teams and the starting pitchers for the game so the lineups aren't as important to their decision making.

A lot of times you can have your mind made up about a game and then find out last minute that Player X is out of the lineup. The natural reaction may be to second guess yourself at that point which usually leads to bad things.

Anyways, just my two cents.

Interesting discussion point.

I think you get some of the best lines in the morning, probably becuz everyone else is being smart and waiting for the lineups. But all in all if I was betting the Jays today, I wud be betting on Halladay to outpitch Burnett, not Vernon Wells to outhit A-Rod. For instance last night when I found out Chipper wasn't playing, I felt even better about the mets, and we all know how that turned out. Also a few days ago I bet the reds, then I find out Joey Votto isn't playing and I think I'm screwed, but the Reds crush. Sure a single hitter can give you an edge, but in the end its all about the Pitcher.

pitching is usually the most important factor and most places have bets under listed pitchers unless you specifically choose action

I guess you guys have a good point about the pitcher.... i guess the game from a week ago is still bothering me... to be exact it was the whitesox vs the rangers game on espn i believe last sunday or so... where ALL stats favored the whitesox in that game, and the pitching matchup was danks vs harrison. danks era was in the 2's harrison's in the 6's and EVERYTHING pointed at the whitesox big, so i played it in the morning..... an hour before the game it was announced Thome, Dye, and AJ were not in the lineup and they got crushed 5-1.... i guess i was a little bit more bitter about that game than i thought... anyone else play that game and get burned???

In cases like that if you were worried about the lineup changes, wouldn't it be best to make an equal play on texas to cancel your original bet? Sure if the white sox still won you would lose the juice, but if texas won then you would get your money back and break even.

I have great difficulty posting plays early. The reason is, I sometimes am not able to pull the trigger until a few minutes prior to first pitch. I want ALL the info that I can find that is available.

I live in Vegas so sometimes I take a position on a game just because I am driving by the sportsbook. I usually spend the 2-3 hours before the game getting the bulk of my info. I make the remaining wagers on the pc using the offshores or my phone account @ Stations.

If I find that I have new info after making the early bet I can buy off of it. Or I can add on to it if the info substantiates a stronger play or the line has moved in my favor throughout the day.

Good theory.... i just hate buying out of plays, even though, a lot of the time it could be the smart way to go

Yeah I hear ya. I had cavs -9.5 last night and pinnacle allows live betting during commercial breaks and during the 3rd qtr I was tempted to do hawks +8.5 to cover myself cause cavs didn't look like they could pull away. In the end I decided to let it ride and it paid off.

I get much better lines than what the game is at when the line closes because I bet so early. I'll take the chance of a key player sitting when most lines are moving 10-15 cents in my favor.

I usually bet the night before or the next morning on favorites, because that's when you get better lines. I bet on nothing but pitchers and teams that are hot or teams in the top of their standings. If you like a dog, it's better to wait until the last possible minute to get the best value.

Example:
Betting on Halladay at home the night before can save you over 30 to 60 on juice, then if you wait until an hour before the game. If a star player or 2 from the opposing team is out, then the line can go up as much as 90.

I agree with most on getting early lines. The team's ability to play on the road or at home, the bullpen IP lately & ERA, and SP are much more important than one bat, imo. Plus most injuries we can know hours before. Even with a late scratch it's easy to at least know about its possibility.
