Buying Brand New $23,000 Cars For Commuters in Phoenix is Cheaper Than Light Rail for $1.4B
CARPE DIEM
By Mark J. Perry

The other day, Phoenix trumpeted that its daily light rail ridership had reached 37,000 boardings per weekday. Since most of those people have two boardings per day (one each direction) we can think of this as 18,500 people making a round trip each day.

Well, if we bought each of these folks a brand new Prius III for $23,000 it would cost us just over $425 million. This is WAY less than the $1.4 billion we pay to move them by rail instead. We could have bought every regular rider a Prius and still have a billion dollars left over! And, having a Prius, they would be able to commute and get good gas mileage anywhere they wanted to go in Phoenix, rather than just a maximum of 20 miles on just one line.

Cool. I'm moving to Phoenix asap, scoring my free $23K rig and then driving back to Florida - where in the next few years I can ride the light rail out of Clearwater directly east into Orlando to see a Magic game and go to Universal theme park.

They could let you and others do that...and it would still be cheaper than the light rail project. :103631605

Yeah...but all those tens of thousands of free sleds would further clog up the I275/I4 corridor and would make for bigger traffic jams which I'd be looking at out the window of the light rail train on my way to Orlando.

No reason for clogged corridors if we spent that 1.4 billion on them rather than a light rail that really doesn't go where any of us want to go.

How do you get to the light rail? Walk? :grandmais

Our railroads are ruins of what the were while Europe has the finest public transportation system in the world. Meanwhile we cant get past the start-up cost of new systems ourselves because conservatives are so shortsighted they can't see past their noses.

American don't want railroads...America isn't Europe.

Liberals want them because they are a never ending cash cow that they can manage into the ground with endless government subsidy.

Libs like that stuff even if it ruins the country.

It would be cheaper to subsidize chauffeured limo's to cart everyone around directly to their home and back.

1.4 Billion for a light rail system...LMAO. :ohno:

There's one catch bardude. You can't drive it out of the state that paid for it. If you move out you have to give it up.

Bullshit!

No bullshit...most of these light rail boondoggles come in at $50,000-$75,000 per passenger...using their own statistics.

It would make far more sense to have chauffeured Hybrid Hummers pick us up at our doorstep...take us where we want to go... and bring us back home.

1.4 Billion light rail project...LMAO! :ohno:

I will run it through one of those Earl Schieb paint shops and slap some Florida plates on it and no one will be the wiser

Here in Portland they are building this crap faster than they can rig the elections that fund it. They put it to a vote between to communities for a light rail line. Both communities vote it down. They still build the thing.

They don't reduce congestion. They just make life easier for bus riders. Our freeways are as crowded as ever and they keep building these kickback projects to no end.

Now they are even cutting bus routes in order to keep funding. Eating their own. And then the light rail "proponents" (developers and contractors) claim ridership is increasing. They say demand is there, we must build more.

Even if the light rail wasn't a total waste of money and time, they don't make sense. Try taking the kids to soccer practice, getting groceries, and picking up some fertilizer from Home Depot on that bs light rail scam.

I rode on the Portland light rail from the airport to a parking lot where my friend's wife picked me up when I visited them. It was nice but not many people were riding it.

I don't remember how many time Phoenix's light rail was voted down before it passed.

If MJ were against private ownership of automobiles he could produce figures showing that it cost you $20,000 to drive to the grocery store.

All of his arguments are best left alone unless you have a lot of time and do not have enough frustration in your life.
