The legal system in the US is partly responsible for this. I can imagine the situation - guy can't stand his wife, prolly been torturing him mentally for years and he knows if he divorces her he'll lose the kids too as is the case 99% of the time. So he thinks "If i ain't having them she's not either" in a mental flip and throws the kids and himself off the balcony"

I wonder why he did it so early in the morning? When your on vacation at a beach hotel the first thing I like to see is the water. Fuck everything else.

I will agree with the sentiment in this thread about the total waste of throwing the kids over......I have to wonder if the wife would have went over the side if she wouldn't have been in another room.....
As far as the discussion earlier about the ability to kill your wife or not.....I don't think you need to be insane to actually commit the crime, you just need to be cold and calculating to try it and extremely detail oriented to get away with it....
I watch most of the detective shows on Discovery, A & E, etc......I see how most of the guys fucked up and got caught because either they didn't plan it out deep enough, or simply involved too many people or told some future girlfriend about somebody getting murdered and then some cold case detective come calling and getting informed from the girlfriend...
You can't rob a bank or commit a crime with 7 people and get away with it....people talk, especially when the state is leaning on them for the crime or some other event...pretty soon it turns into "I'll talk for immunity or a reduced sentence"
I watched a show where the feds were trying to get DNA from a suspect to match with a murder scene....during a police interview, the suspect kept the bottle he was drinking from, put out a cigarette he was smoking and put it into his pocket, then when called upon to sign a statement and place it into an envelope and lick it and seal it.....He told the detective flatout that that was the third time they tried to get his DNA.....
They continued to watch the guy, he took smoke breaks on the back steps at work....instead of throwing the cigarette down, he mashed it against the brick and walked back inside the building with it.....so he KNEW they were still after him.....If it was me, I'd have gotten a cigarette butt or two from some ashtray after some other male put the butts out, and drop one of those a couple of times out by the back steps.....
About a week later the douchebag went downtown shopping and spit about a half-dozen times, giving prosecutors all the DNA they needed to put him away for life.
I don't think insanity is needed to kill someone, just a diabolical mind driven by a strong motivation......I think guys like the Son of Sam are different than the Scott Petersons of the planet......Scott had more personal motivation where Sam was just out looking to kill someone.
Just my own thoughts.....I have often thought about some of these crimes and talked to my boss about these shows and how the criminals blew it......He told me I had a criminal mind.....
