This guy really shouldnt be allowed to compete!!!
<HR style="COLOR: #fdde82" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->I saw this guys story on HBO story outside the line and i was so disgusted with how the story was told. If you have competed in any kind of distance running then you have felt the pain or "burn" you get in your calf muscles.

This guys legs were amputated when he was 11 months old. His heart only has to pump blood to practically only 70% of his body!

While your legs are burning energy so fast they are producing acid, this guy is cruising along fine with his thigh muscles quickly punching the blood right back up to the heart for quick fresh new oxygenate blood.

Yet the argument on his bionic legs only focussed on that issue alone. "Do his bionic legs give him an advantage over the average runner?"

That is besides the point the man his cheating pure and simple!!!

Double-amputee Pistorius fails again to qualify for Olympics

Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius missed out on another chance to qualify for the Olympics, finishing seventh in the 400 meter race at the Golden Gala meet Friday.

The South African finished in 46.62 seconds to place seventh in the 400 meter B race at the Golden Gala meet Friday. He must run a 45.55 to qualify for the Olympics.
Last week in Milan, in his first able-bodied race in nearly a year, Pistorius ran a 47.78. His lifetime best is 46.36.
"I felt this race was awesome, but I can still improve," he said. "After last week's race in Milan I was really worried and I was very nervous going in tonight."
Pistorius resumed training less than two months ago after a sports arbitration court ruled he was eligible to run in Beijing.
The court overturned a decision by the IAAF that Pistorius' carbon-fiber prosthetics gave him an unfair advantage and that he should be banned from the Olympics and any other able-bodied race.
On Sunday, Pistorius plans to run a 200-meter race in Lignano, Italy, "for fun," to work on his sprinting, then will make perhaps his final Olympic attempt in Lucerne, Switzerland, on Wednesday.
Pistorius said he still hopes to qualify for the Olympics but "it was always going to be a very difficult goal, I have to be realistic and I have to admit the chances are slim."
Pistorius has struggled to regain his form after spending most of 2008 away from training to concentrate on fighting the ban, which was lifted May 16.
His most realistic shot to compete in the Aug. 8-24 Beijing Games could be as part of South Africa's four-man relay, for which six team members are chosen.
Pistorius said he feels he probably must go under 46 seconds to make the relay.
"But even if the Olympic dream doesn't come down this time ... I'm still very happy," he said.
Either way, Pistorius plans to race in the Sept. 6-17 Paralympics in Beijing -- then focus on qualifying for the 2012 London Games.
Pistorius was born without fibulas -- the long, thin outer bone between the knee and ankle -- and was 11 months old when his legs were amputated below the knee.

What are you talking about? You're a moron and clearly an asshole as well. This guy should absolutely be able to compete if he qualifies.

fine i admire his courage. but fair is fair. That guy gets to lift his legs minus almost 35-40% of the normal weight missing (depending on how heavy the fake legs are)

If i am an athlete running against him, i would be pissed off about that. I would be doubly pissed off that this guy only has to pump blood a short distance.

Say what you may, that is a ridiculously large artificial advantage he has over a normal athlete. His body cuts a big friggin corner when it avoids the need to process energy that an otherwise normal athelet would have to process in competition running.

this guy has the equivalent of a steriod in that it takes him longer to get tired than a regular athlete.

No one has yet addressed the issue and the only science i have seen about him only addresses the artificial legs and whether or not they are machines.

Surely if the advantage was as pronounced as you say, he'd be running the 2000m or marathon, not 400m.

No, the biology doesnt work like that. I have forgotten the technical terms for it, but the processes for powering the body over long distance are different for that over a longer distance.

for example, i dont think a guy like him could have an advantage over people in the 100m dash because the muscles alone have enough raw power to sustain themselves for the 10-11 seconds over that distance.

HOwever add another 300 m to it and the process changes completely. There is and oyxgen debt to pay off and acids to dispell from the muscles. All work which take alot of power from and athlete. Work which his body can do less of because it does not have to worry about his lower extremities.

i agree with jam. I dont think he is a cheater. I do think he is a great human being. But consider this if you was a dad of a 18 or 20 year trying to qualify and this guy takes one of the spots. If you are a runner or every been taught about running you can relate to where jam is coming from. And they can say what they want. He feels no pain below the knees. Also the oxygen thing jam pointed out is not opinion but fact.

lol, there are NO high school kids that are capable of running 46s in the quaarter,,, lol

I ran competively in college (I received a scholorship for my Half Mile) and it is WRONG for this kid to be in the olympics!!!

it is wrong, the olympics is about being fair, and competeing for your country, and yes It SUCKS that he has a disability, but allowing him to compete is the same as allowing WHEEL CHAIR athletes in the Marathon to compete directly with the real runners,,

that is just wrong,,,

the guy needs to compete in the special olympics or the disability olympics where he will be a star.

And obviously something tragic has happened in this guys life, give the guy credit for trying most people in his situation would just turn to drugs and alcohol and become a worthless fucking cripple that gets a check every month for disability. Say what you want but if you ever became like this in your life just imagine the difficulties that lye ahead of you every day.

This guy does more on a daily basis than 50% of the world does with their natural born limbs in tack, I applaud the guy for trying.

I have a friend that lost his right leg due to cancer, and he refuses to be handicap he gets around better than most sorry ass people. And when he drives some where he parks just like normal people he says he's not handicap and refuses to park in the handicap parking area and refuses special treatment for anything.

Like i said most people would just turn to drugs and alcohol and become worthless ass people. JMHO

Suppose you have a humanoid robot stimulated and coordinated by microprocessors (now and ancient term) and powered by solar panels. Do you think it is fair to race this mechanical creation against flat footed humans? No. Do you think it is fair to race top flight sprinters against wheel chair athletes in a 100m ? No. Race the race and round the publicity to include the news that there are thirty thousand Iraq Vets (I cannot get a grip on this number) who will need real long term health care instead of this miracle sprinter crap (as if they can all grow olympic bones like the skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts regenerative imagery that wounds will 'grow' away with technology). You might argue that Speedo fastskin torpedo suits are a comparable accepted advance in tech. However the difference is that all swimmers have the option to take the hour it takes to put on the suit , same as all sprinters have the option to wear advanced running shoes and all run on the same advances in track surfaces. If a tech advance requires amputation then it is unreasonable and unfair.
