I have cable and didn't know that DTV would need a phone line, which I don't have, and that will run an extra $20 a month. All together, DTV will run an extra $12 a month over cable to due to the phone. What should I do to barter them down in price?

You do not have a home phone line?

How do you recieve your internet?

Is it possible to get vonage or madjack or something?

I have DSL thorugh my phone company (embarq) and they will not let me drop my phone line and just use them for DSL, but I am not familiar with cable, if they will let you just have internet without using their cable for TV.

They don't really need a phone line. When the installer gets there, just tell him your phone service gets installed in two days or whatever. They have two choices at this point... either install and make their money (most are paid on a job-by-job basis) or leave and waste time/money. I've never had anyone put up any fuss at all about it as long as you tell them it's getting installed in the next week.

You don't need a phone line for Directv. However, if you don't have one, you won't be able to order PPV from your remote. You would have to either call customer service (for which they will charge you), or order it online (which is free and very easy). To my knowledge, that is the only thing you won't be able to do without the phone line. Programming changes and updates to their software are all done through the satellite. For some reason I can't get my phone line to work with DTV properly and there are no problems with the service.

They say you have to have one but you really don't . The reason is that (as of 2 years ago) each receiver has a limit of like $50 of PPV orders on it. You don't need the phone line to order and watch PPV, you need the phone line to send off information saying you ordered. So essentially, no phone line means you get $50 of free PPV that is never sent to your bill because of the lack of a phone line. We used to explain to people all the time why they all of a sudden had $50 worth of PPVs they ordered years ago on their bill... they finally plugged their receiver into a phone line.

I don't think that is correct. The only way you can order PPV without a phone line is by calling them or via the internet. If you call, they charge you on the spot. If you order via their website, you have to choose your payment option (either cc or bill your account) before they process the order, so you are billed immediately. I don't even have the option to order PPV with the remote since my phone line doesn't work with the equipment.

Well if you told someone you don't have a phone line hooked up, they likely have you marked down as no remote ordering on their computer systems. I'm assuming that's what is happening. Usually they don't do that if you tell them you are going to get a line.

Jake is right, they don't really need the phone line.

Just play along with it.

I had sunday ticket last year and no phone hooked to the box the whole time, worked fine.

So I don't need a phone line to get FSN or regional sports networks?

You can order PPV without the phone hooked in, I have done that too. Just the charges might be slower to show up in your account.

The phone line is really just so they can monitor your activity. There is nothing I can't do without it hooked in.

I don't know. Maybe it is an old equipment v. new equipment thing. They think I have a phone line hooked up. I have called in the past to try and get it fixed, unhooked, restarted, they were supposed to send "test calls" to see if it worked, had me go through all sorts of menus and check things. All kinds of shit but the phone line never started working. This was all after I upgraded to the HDDVR. If I try to order PPV (not sure about movies, but UFC is like this), there is no option for me to order it from the screen. When I was on with customer service they said it was b/c the phone line wasn't working. Who knows. Only thing I know is that you definitely do not need the phone line and if you don't have it, the only inconvenience is having to log on to order PPV instead of ordering from the remote.

Like I said, they may have remedied the ordering of PPV without a phone line with the new equipment.

How do you do it? Do you have the HD DVR? I'm not even given the option to order it.

One possibility is this...

Have you ever been able to order PPVs with the remote? After a while, if the receiver can't send off the charges, the remote ordering locks up since you've hit the receiver limit. The charges are never sent off to be billed until you plug the receiver in to a phone line. Has it ever worked with the remote? It might just be the receiver is full and has hit it's $50 limit.

PS, I've done it with DTV's HD DVR before but it was over a year ago and it was the first HD DVR they offered, which I'm sure isn't the same version currently.

OK I just looked. You have to call the toll free number if you have no phone hooked up. Automated, but there will probably be an extra charge. (I don't know I could do it back in the day, I posted in haste I guess.)

So, if you want to order PPV through the remote you will need the phone line.

To just recieve your programming whatever that might be no phone line needed. I know this to be true.

Good, I can save on a phone line.

Does anyone have some tips on how to get reduced rates or anything? I've never really dealt with DTV before.
