How is the gambling scene there compared to Vegas? Also I have read the town is booming and decent employment is readily available. Thanks

Sports- Not as good
Slots- Equal
VP- Not as good

Not a bad place.

Almost moved there when I was deciding to get out of Vegas.

I was thinking of living 30 miles south in Gardnerville area and live on a ranch. Maybe raise some cattle.

Love Virginia City and the whole area is quite gorgeous with Lake Tahao and such.

You could do alot worse Randy.

ps- I love Florida and could not have picked a better place for myself.......different strokes for different folks.

What do you do Randy? Casinos and gambling scene in Reno is pretty terrible. Downtown is an outright dump on weekdays and the residents in town treat it like a slice of Iowa. There is very little nightlife and it will continue to get worse as people stop coming to the casinos.

On the flip side the job market is incredible, like 3% unemployment I think. Most of the people moving in are from the Bay Area so they think nothing of the soaring housing costs, but it is getting pretty damn expensive. I think the median house is up around $260k now, and that won't buy you much. Rent is relatively cheap though.

In short if you are into the outdoors, skiing and biking and the like you will like it. If you are raising a family or live a pretty sedate life, you will like it. If you are thinking it is anything like Vegas you will be incredibly disappointed.

randy- They frown on gambling in Reno just as they do in Las Vegas. I don't know about the growth and employment opportunities but I would certainly suggest an exploratory trip there before you make a permanent move.

I am 42 and thinking about semi-retiring. Definately looking there for the access to skiing and staying around gambling. My bankfoll can do a move like this just not one overseas plus I aleays want to work at something.

No state tax in Florida, that is correct.

There have been some great slot and video poker plays in Reno and the Lake Tahoe area....and probably still are.

Spent a couple months up there a few summers and did very well.

Many Vegas slot/vp pros make that their summer getaway.

Fish, you just answered one of my questions. Are there %100+ VP there and do many off our offshore buddies frown on accounts from Nevada?

I hear 100+ VP isn't that common in Reno. Just realize that most people in Reno are proud to be non-gamblers. I live about half the time in Vegas and half the time in Reno and the two are worlds apart. There isn't much advertising for the locals market and the couple of places that I hear have good VP games are incredible dumps. Make one trip over to the Sands, Rail City, Baldinis, or the worst of all, Western Village and you will see what I mean. Big ass dumps are the only places you get local action, these are places I feel embarassed to be seen in. The Atlantis and Peppermill are nice places and they both send out a lot of good coupons to locals, but the games are lousy. There is just really little competition in Reno for gambling dollars because so many locals proudly say "I haven't been in a casino in three years, blah blah blah".

Randy- Do not worry about accessing your offshore accounts from Nevada. You will be fine in that regard.

Yes, as of two years ago, there were some very nice VP plays in Reno.

At the time however, it was nothing on the scale of VP in Vegas. However, you will find plays if your patient and in the know.

Was on a $5 full-pay dueces machine there 7-8 years ago with a good slot card to boot. Great play!! Over $100 an hour on paper, of course yours trully went the worst of any pro on the play and made nowhere near that. Hit only one royal in about 120 hours of play and then they changed the machines back to sub 100%.

Forgot about the offshore question, but only Intertops that I know of won't let you play.

Reno is very nice if you are looking for peaceful, sedate, and great outdoors activities. The Arrowcreek area is the hot spot with two private golf courses and prices rising 20 - 40% a year. University of Nevada is upgrading the athletic program and there is talk of a AAA baseball team if they can build a new stadium.

Good Luck to All

No, I went to a CC in Knoxville. I have been out there a few times to ski, most recently at Vail in Jan.
