I'm watching TV and a commercial comes on - an older man and woman (husband and wife) talking about a friend who has cancer and doesn't have health insurance because the dumb fukk went with a start up company that "couldn't afford" the premiums.

The gist of the commercial is that we need nationalized health care.

My first thought is that the stupid bastard took a gamble - a great future at what he saw as low risk - and he paid the price - why should I have to pay for his health insurance while he gets rich?

Then I think back to Ronnie Reagan submitting a bill for nationalized catastrophic health insurance, where medical and other costs are covered during a time of personal catastrophe such as getting cancer.

It was a perfect piece of legislation for an aging population - people in their 50's and 60's or older are more likely than anyone else to suffer a financial catastrophe.

The Democrats shot it down saying it favored the rich!

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd much rather see a national catastrophic insurance bill that covered me and mine if I were to suffer a serious health care issue.

Nationalized Health care - NO

Nationalized catastrophe insurance - YES

What do you think?

We can tweak our existing system, but no need to throw the baby out with the bath water. Especially since the overwhelming majority of Americans are happy with their own health care.

Yet they're concerned about health care in this country, how can that be? hint, watch the enabling news

if it works exactly how you worded it then yes i would agree with you......what if grand parents(both in their 60's lets say) are taking care their grand children(assume parents passed away)...and the child was found to have cancer.....should be free for the child also?

People don't even understand the concept of insurance.

We need more personal responsibility and less government.

So true.

Using medical insurance to pay for EVERYTHING is like filling up your car with gas and sticking your auto insurance company with the tab.

No wonder costs are skyrocketing!

Insurance is meant for emergencies only -- and no, of course I would never support government catastrophe insurance.

Since when is the federal government supposed to look after people medically?

Ridiculous.

BB sets the standard: I don't know about anyone else, but I'd much rather see a national catastrophic insurance bill that covered me and mine if I were to suffer a serious health care issue.

SH: Heh...that makes you pretty much like the rest of us. Though perhaps one difference is I'd be happy to see more progress towards taxpayer supported insurance coverage that covered You and Yours in addition to Me and Mine.
