If you banned all offshores where at least one of the principals had a record, there would be a very short list to bet with.

truthteller,

i have no idea why this book didnt pay for their ineffective marketing at mw.

for that matter, i don't even know if they actually refused to pay or not.

BOTTOM LINE IS WE HAVE NO REASON TO PULL BODOG.

That's not going to happen here. Bodog is Sting's biggest advertiser, I think.

Max:

This Bodog issue is between Bodog and Russy.

Russy can post on 411.

Neither one of them belong here.

I agree but they already stiffed someone offshore. They should be banned not because of the owners past record but because of stiffing MW.

truthteller,

TELL THE TRUTH
icon_wink.gif
, DO YOU KNOW FOR SURE THEY EVEN STIFFED MW?

i mean honestly, mw has a history of bashing books after they stop advertising with them, so this could simply be that type of situation.

in any business advertising is paid for IN ADVANCE. why would this have been any different?

RPM this could not be FARTHER from the truth. As I sit at my desk this very moment in one of the LARGEST ad agencies in the world I vehemently deny this claim. This is exactly what I do for a living - I buy media (broadcast). Terms of payment vary, but they are typically 90 days. Never in all my years have we paid in advance. It simply doesnt happen. GL.

docdekay,

In this industry, advertising is almost always paid in advance...

We have been doing this for many years now, so I do know a little....

Furthermore, one of our friendlier competitors, namely covers.com, probably has the most stringent criteria today on who they allow to advertise with them, and BODOG is one of them...

That alone speaks volumes on behalf of BODOG...

I have no experience with offshore advertising buying, but in every other facet (print, outdoor, broadcast, traditional online) terms of payment are usually 90 days and sometimes 60 or 30. If advanced payment is the offshore industry standard that really provides a sad commentary on the state of that industry. The main client I work for has (tv) budgets which exceed 20 million $ per quarter. Trust is never breached and stations are ALWAYS paid on time. And if for some reason they arent, they have legal recourse.

docdekay,

This will be my last post on this thread because it's old news..

But suffice to say that marketing and ad campaigns for offshore sports books are an entirely different animal compared to other industries...

As fas as Bodog is concerned, and if my memory serves me corectly, Bodog claims that MW kept them on longer than was agreed to on their contract and then MW asked them for ad money months later...

In my opinion, this is clearly an advertising dispute between MW and BODOG and has no reflection on their ability to pay out...

I am not trying to dispute who is right and who is wrong. Industry standard should dicate day to day activity. If payment in advance is the norm, then these terms should be both followed and enforced. Being a media buyer, I am simply taken back at the lack of trust that exists between salesman and buyer. You can rest assured that you wouldnt see a single prime time spot if payment in advance was required. I am not making value judgments, but rather observations on the business practices which exist in the offshore industry. I'm not a fool. I know that payment in advance functions to protect those selling the media. Coca Cola, Burger King and ATT are not going anywhere. Unfortunately, the same cant be said for wewillstealyourpostup.com. I know where you're coming from. Trust me.

Royal is a good example! They were going to hell in a handbasket until they became an advertiser here at TheRx...

Not to mention the Peep/Oly thing.

Not going to get into this too much but I did want to address Docdekay....

Ken is right, advertising is this biz is always cash up front. Being in this business as well I can tell you it is for numerous reasons, the least of which is trust.

For example, from my standpoint the marketing part of this business is the biggest pain in the ass there is. The emails, the site itself and anything else you can imagine that sounds boring and tedious I would take any day of the week over doing ad deals.

It also takes time and resources to put people up, take them back down and try to follow-up every month if the check is slow. Probably 5 sites in this business carry a staff. The rest is done by the owner or outsourced on a sub-contractor type basis. The time and money spent by us that don't carry a staff needs to be devoted to keeping the sponsors happy and not trying to keep track every month when all our checks are coming in.

There are plenty of other reasons but I think you get where I am going with this. Bottomline is it's easier to get everything taken care of at once for both sides.

I can't speak for anyone else but if I didn't trust a sponsor they would not appear as a betting option to my visitors.

Shrink, My memory isn't much better than yours, so I looked up the terms on the MW/Bodog contract that was posted July 15th 2002. I guess you could say MW shorted them for 2 weeks of the advertising they stiffed on.

You posted angrily about a similar situation awhile back after getting stiffed for advertising as well. I can't find that thread anywhere. Help?
