If a hockey game takes place and nobody shows up to see it, does it really happen?

The Ottawa Senators are in Florida to take on the Panthers on Monday night and what can only be described as a small gathering showed up to watch them, as captured in the above photo from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun just before the drop of the puck.
It turned out to be the smallest crowd in franchise history with an announced attendance of just 7,311.

Bad attendance seems like it's going to be a reoccurring thing when it comes to Panthers games this season, especially after they reduced the capacity of their building by covering up sections of the upper deck and are coming off a home-opener that featured the smallest opening night crowd in the history of the franchise.
According to Panthers beat writer George Richards, the record for smallest crowd in franchise history before Monday was 10,063 back in October of 2007.
A game like this is pretty much the worst-case scenario for the Panthers.
Not only is it an early season weeknight game for a team that missed the playoffs last season, but when you combine it with an opponent that generates as little excitement as the Ottawa Senators do -- and a team that has no real road following outside of Ontario to speak of -- and, well, that's when you're going to have nights like this...

If they were smart they'd upgrade any season ticket holders to the best seats, then give away all the rest of the tickets to local schools. Get kids to go so they bring their parents and then at least people in the seats so they eat and drink something.

For posters who hate hockey they sure do follow the sport a lot

I could care more about the NBA don't watch it or check scores

I would say not many people in the south like hockey. Staples center is always packed for hockey games, and has been long before the Kings were winning cups. Sharks games are always packed too. Hockey is liked by many in the North, East Coast, and West. The southern teams always fail.
I can get $1500 on a hockey game no problem here no problem in Nevada because people actually bet it here and watch it. I once had to get approval on a $10 dollar bet for an MLS game, not joking.

wtf is pro hockey doing in Florida anyway? Fn ridiculous. Hey Buttman you idiot, move the Panthers to Hamilton where they'll sell out every game. Put a team in the BC Interior, where they'll sell out every game, oh and stick a team back in Quebec City where they'll sell out every game. Phoenix, Nashville, FLorida, Tampa, Carolina??? WTF?

Exactly, if you want to put teams in the States, why not Portland or Seattle, where people actually watch hockey? The South is more into their Nascar and could care less about hockey.

Gary Bettman is a genius. He expanded hockey to cities where no one cares. The Miami Marlins would be thrilled if they could get 7100 fans into their ballpark.

Florida sports fans suck. Can't wait to see the Heat's attendance numbers this year.

That's not good for the NHL in general.

They had a good thing going till they took fighting out (rather they disciplined it more)
