The value of HOME COOKING in College Basketball cannot be overlooked or emphasized enough when comparing this to other sports...

For example, when ODU played Texas A & M Corpus Christi on THEIR COURT, the Home team shot 32 Foul Shots whereas ODU shot only 5...

My point here is that I believe SOME HOME COURTS in College Hoops may be worth considerably more than the 4-5 points used by oddsmakers...

What do others think?

No question about it home court is huge in college hoops. And a large part of it is getting the calls from the refs. It's practically inevitable. Give or take, I think it's worth roughly 5 pts either way. In other words, a team that would be -10 at home might be a pk em on the road.

This is usually well built into the line though.

i think its more than the refs giving the home team calls. the comfort with the actual physical home court as well as the crowd affects the home team much more than it does in college football.

illinois would have probably lost last night if the game was at wake.

I would go so far as to say that SOME HOME COURTS are worth more than 5 points, considerably more...

Most sharp oddsmakers(like LVSC), have different home court ratings for each NCAA team that could range anywhere from say 2-7 points.

As SHRINK as suggested, one cannot just assign every team the same home court advantage number.

I have a book around here somewhere that lists what each college court was worth..........but this was many years ago.

Probably cant find it anyway.

Perhaps one of the LVSC guys will pop in and give their current home court ratings.

I know a couple of them read the forum here.

Thats EXACTLY my point Fishhead, as I have seen some courts where I do believe the VALUE may be as high as 7 and even 8, compared to others, where it is much lower....

I definitely agree with you guy, I think its very hard to get calls at Cameron Indoor Stadium or its tough for teams travelling to Wisconsin to come out ahead. Illinois is one of the toughest places to play with the students right on the court.

However isn't the home court advantage diminished because there are so many points scored in a game??

I would say St. Johns in Alumni Hall is probably a 7 and at Madison Sq. Garden its probably a 2.

Thanks for that link Fish as I see ODU is ranked less than one point behind GONZAGA...

Obviously, the oddsmakers are onto ODU as they are clearly one of the BEST MID-MAJOR teams in the country this year...

Anyone care to guess what the line will be Saturday Night when ODU hosts William and Mary?

i dont think its 7 or 8 evenly each game. ITs dynamic. It can max out at 8 or 9 in certain situations and fall back down to normal 3 points in others.

KEy games, revenge games, after a loss and back at home, Prime time TV game, things like that can all cause for a home team advantage to swell but its not the same for a random early season non conference game or a game where the home team is already a big fav over a overmatched team there is not

Like Syracuse should not have had the 8 point home court boost last night.

But they might dererve it when U conn comes to town later in the year.

interesting thread.

Home court advantage in college hoops varies from team to team, large and small conferences, closeness of students/fans to the court, game significance, intensity of rivalries, and so on. Personally, my range in home court advantage is between 3 and 6 points depending on the factors mentioned above.
