There are no trap lines. The more "educated" a person/gambler thinks they are, the more they start top blieve in trap lines.

A true 'trap' line would be described as one that no matter what happens in a game, the line was a trap.

Like this Superbowl line. If NE wins by 6, then everyone that bet NE will think it was a trap because they didn't cover. And everyone betting the Eagels will be the "UI told you so bunch" "too many points" the usual stuff.

Same difference if NE wins by 30, people that Bet the Eagles will be the ones who think it was a trap, offering that TD with a good team like that was "too many points" (same definition, totally different meaning) and they got sucked in because it looked so good.

Trap lines by my defintition would be the lines that do exactly what the books used to want...splitting the action down the middle. Or at least enticing people to be 'scared' by the number and lay off. Thus they serve a couple things they either split the action or keep people off the game altogether.

As long as enough of those so called trap lines got eh way that a majority think the trap was supposed to swing these discussions will go on forever, and the books will continue to bury people. The sooner people think for themselves and forget about the line, or let the line influence their bet,the sooner people might start winning a little bit.

A trap game is to a gambler what the boggie man is to a 10 year old. Something they think exists thus allowing it to scare them but in reality is just a fictional figment of one's mind.

Its not really worth arguing about...so lets stop it...both of you are a little bit right. I lost money on Wake tonight, was it a trap? No It was a risk(wager) I didn't learn squat Wake is the better team, they got beat; it happends and will happend again...we minimize our losses and move on. If I won every bet I would become arrogant...and that is not a name for Glaken. I prefer humble and learning. Good Luck, G

I love this thread...great topic Dante!

IMO a trap is only a term used 'after the fact'... but this still made for some great conversing...

A trap bet does in deed exist. I have two definitions.
1. I thought Wake Forest -1 against Ga Tech last night was a trap bet. I knew all the suckers would bet on Wake Forest as soon as I seen the line, not playing results either.
2. If I bet a bookie on 3 different games and the world has it 1/2 pt or 1pt different, later on that day all 3 games go against me, means I just got trapped on 3 games.

What if the 3 games you bet win, are they traps then?

If Wake wins last night then the guys that bet on GT would have said they were trapped. It is just the guys that bet on Wake thought they were.

ake had their chance to win that game. If anything that line was just about right if you ask me. One of the few times that the books actually post a number that is close to the reality of the game.

It was a tie game after regulation, and it was back and forth in the OT, and Wake still had their chances to win, they only lost by one. The ONLY way it could have been closer was to have GT at -1. Would that have been a trap line too? That was the result. One could say that was even more of a trap line since GT was favored.

Games like that are exactly what books love. It perpetuates this myth that scares people to death. People lose enough as it is without being scared. But ading that psychological stigma to certain games gives the books more than enough leverage to bury people both financialy as well as mentally.

It doesnt matter if all 3 games I bet and the line goes against me on all 3 games win. I know my money isnt worth 10cents on a dollar in a long run. anytime you bet 3 games day in and day out and the line consistenly goes against you. I think I could save time by ripping the money. as far as you saying about the Wake forest game I didnt guess that the public was going to bet them. the line looked too inviting for a sucker, not a wiseguy. the wiseguys bet the winner.
