The Spoiled Children of Capitalism
In large measure our wealth isn’t the product of capitalism, it is capitalism.

By Jonah Goldberg

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%"><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top>It’s an old story. Loving parents provide a generous environment for their offspring. Kids are given not only ample food, clothing and shelter, but the emotional necessities as well: encouragement, discipline, self-reliance, the ability to work with others and on their own. And yet, in due course, the kids rebel. Some even say their parents never loved them, that they were unfair, indifferent, cruel. Often, such protests are sparked by parents’ refusal to be even more generous. I want a car, demands the child. Work for it, insist the parents. Why do you hate me? asks the ingrate.

Of course, being an old story doesn’t make it a universal one. But the dynamic is universally understood.

We’ve all witnessed the tendency to take a boon for granted. Being accustomed to a provision naturally leads the human heart to consider that provision an entitlement. Hence the not-infrequent lawsuits from prison inmates cruelly denied their rights to cable TV or apple brown betty for desert.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

And so it goes, I think, with capitalism generally.

Capitalism is the greatest system ever created for alleviating general human misery, and yet it breeds ingratitude.

People ask, “Why is there poverty in the world?” It’s a silly question. Poverty is the default human condition. It is the factory preset of this mortal coil. As individuals and as a species, we are born naked and penniless, bereft of skills or possessions. Likewise, in his civilizational infancy man was poor, in every sense. He lived in ignorance, filth, hunger, and pain, and he died very young, either by violence or disease.

The interesting question isn’t “Why is there poverty?” It’s “Why is there wealth?” Or: “Why is there prosperity here but not there?”

At the end of the day, the first answer is capitalism, rightly understood. That is to say: free markets, private property, the spirit of entrepreneurialism and the conviction that the fruits of your labors are your own.

For generations, many thought prosperity was material stuff: factories and forests, gold mines and gross tons of concrete poured. But we now know that these things are merely the fringe benefits of wealth. Stalin built his factories, Mao paved over the peasants. But all that truly prospered was misery and alienation.

A recent World Bank study found that a nation’s wealth resides in its “intangible capital” — its laws, institutions, skills, smarts and cultural assumptions. “Natural capital” (minerals, croplands, etc.) and “produced capital” (factories, roads, and so on) account for less than a quarter of the planet’s wealth. In America, intangible capital — the stuff in our heads, our hearts, and our books — accounts for 82 percent of our wealth.

Any number of countries in Africa are vastly richer in baubles and soil than Switzerland. But they are poor because they are impoverished in what they value.

In large measure our wealth isn’t the product of capitalism, it is capitalism.
And yet we hate it. Leaving religion out of it, no idea has given more to humanity. The average working-class person today is richer, in real terms, than the average prince or potentate of 300 years ago. His food is better, his life longer, his health better, his menu of entertainments vastly more diverse, his toilette infinitely more civilized. And yet we constantly hear how cruel capitalism is while this collectivism or that is more loving because, unlike capitalism, collectivism is about the group, not the individual.

These complaints grow loudest at times like this: when the loom of capitalism momentarily stutters in spinning its gold. Suddenly, the people ask: What have you done for me lately? Politicians croon about how we need to give in to Causes Larger than Ourselves and peck about like hungry chickens for a New Way to replace dying capitalism.
This is the patient leaping to embrace the disease and reject the cure. Recessions are fewer and weaker thanks in part to trade, yet whenever recessions appear on the horizon, politicians dive into their protectionist bunkers. Not surprising that this week we saw the demise of the Doha round of trade negotiations, and this campaign season we’ve heard the thunder of anti-trade rhetoric move ever closer.

This is the irony of capitalism. It is not zero-sum, but it feels like it is. Capitalism coordinates humanity toward peaceful, productive cooperation, but it feels alienating. Collectivism does the opposite, at least when dreamed up on paper. The communes and collectives imploded in inefficiency, drowned in blood. The kibbutz lives on only as a tourist attraction, a baseball fantasy camp for nostalgic socialists. Meanwhile, billions have ridden capitalism out of poverty.

And yet the children of capitalism still whine.

Socialism is awesome. Nobody sleeps in the dumpster and everyone has the chance to be a billionaire. But it needs check and balance, I am not for it being abused.

canada, europe. tolerant countries that arnt always in wars, have a strong economy, educated citizens that can read, write, add. low unemployment, strong social and government programs that enrich everyones lives(healthcare), quality of life, family, government that strives the importance of education by ensuring everyone has it, instead of rich people. a currency that is going up, instead of going into the tank. low crime. ill join that anyday and pay 7 percent more in taxes instead of staying here.

What is it with Libs and government porgrams. Why do they insist on having gov. invloved in everything. Why do they insist on having handouts for people who don't want to work. I don't understand the liberals way of thinking. Haven't you learned that when gov. is invloved in social programs that they fuck them up. Social security is fucked up. Medicair is fucked up. Why would you want them to take over the healthcare? Why would you want them involved in anything. Less gov. the better.

I came for a Vacation 15 years ago and for the most part it's been my home ever since. It's beautiful as you know...Housing prices are steep, the average family is living in a box or paying a Shite load if they want to live in the city limits but there is a lot of money to be made in the city .

The women come across stuck up but that's because we have a higher than average number of Douche bags...but really they're not that bad...

Lack of Pro sports is a downer...but Seattle is only a couple hours away...Not a Canucks fan...

The Weather is fantastic in July and August...the rest of the year is nice if you like rain...I don't...but always lots of Snow on the mountains if you ski or snowboard.

It's freedom and spirit and opportunity that lead to mankind's greatest advancements.

Not some government bureaucracy that tries to run things.

It's about freedom and opportunity and choice.

I'll never understand how anyone could put management of their whole life in the hands of politicians. Did they have look around?

"we are the people we've been waiting for"

what a fucking joke

i dont believe one person alone is smart enough to go out on his own. the people doing that are the guys living under bridges now because they wouldnt heed any advice or listen to people. if you had a competent government like other countries you wouldnt be dealing with problems with social security and medicare. the average american doesnt care who is elected, less then half the country votes. i will maintain the average american doesnt deserve the right to live there life the way they want based on there inability, ignorance, and plain stupidity in allowing the US government to continue what they are doing while blindly going on with your daily lives as sheep. the american life is so unfulfilling, so depressing. go to work, come home, have an affair, get drunk, go to work, come home, get drunk, whatever. typical american has no idea what is going on in the world around them, and only care about the football game on sunday. typical american could care less what goes on in iraq, who is president because they just dont care. and they get what they deserve for being lazy, and that is your current gov.

European countries are tolerant and aren't always at war? Do you know anything about European history? Good God, man, the world didn't start the day you were born 20 some odd years ago.

Do you know why they are as prosperous as they are? It's because WE have been subsidizing their defense for the past 50 years. It's because WE came to their aid with the Commission for Relief during WWI and the Marshall Plan after WWII. It's because WE stood along side them in fighting the Nazis and the Communists. And if you've ever been to Europe, you realize that their overall quality of life is not anywhere near ours.

YOU are precisely the type of person about whom the author of this article was referring.

Governmet is for one thing. Keeping it's citizens safe. All the other bullshit that you libs think they need to be involved in is just that. Bullshit. If I was as miserable as you are, I would get the hell out of here ASAP. There are no chains on you. Leave. get out. Go to school in Canada or Europe. Or wherever else you believe is a better place than America. The greatest nation, with the greatest and most generous people in the world.

Can a Pro-Socialist Canadian explain why so many MORE Canadians come to the US than Vice Versa?

It's overwhelming...odd that they'd leave Socialist Paradise to come here.
