M. Tkachuk, Hagel trade barbs ahead of USA-Canada 4 Nations final.

BOSTON -- Team USA's Matthew Tkachuk and Canada's Brandon Hagel traded punches on Saturday night. Ahead of their rematch in the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off championship game on Thursday in Boston, they're trading words.
Hagel said Tuesday that his fight with Tkachuk off the opening faceoff -- one of three fights in the first nine seconds of Team USA's electrifying win in Montreal -- was done "for the flag and not the cameras." He also called out U.S. players J.T. Miller and Matthew and Brady Tkachuk for preplanning their fights against Canada via group chat.
We don't need to initiate anything. We don't have any group chats going on. We're going out there playing our game and then giving it everything and doing it for our country," Hagel said, via Sportsnet. "We're just going to play as hard as we can and do it for the flag on the chest."
Matthew Tkachuk was asked about Hagel's comments on Wednesday morning.
"Maybe their team doesn't like each other then, if they don't have group chats," he said.
Tkachuk and Hagel are rivals in the NHL, as Tkachuk plays for the Florida Panthers and Hagel skates for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
"That's just a player enjoying his opportunity. Our team does not care about anything that they say. There's been a lot of chatter and talk from individuals, but we care about one thing in this room," Tkachuk said. "We have millions of people that are watching us and supporting us around this country and we're very prideful in playing for them. So it's an opportunity of a lifetime for us."
U.S. coach Mike Sullivan said that both Matthew and Brady Tkachuk -- who was under the weather Wednesday and missed practice -- will be available for their game against Canada.
Matthew Tkachuk missed Team USA's game on Monday vs. Sweden out of injury precautions, after being unable to finish the game against Canada because of a lower-body injury. Brady Tkachuk was hurt in the first period against Sweden after he lost an edge while driving to the net and slammed his side into the goal cage. He returned to the ice for a 14-second shift later in the period but did not play the rest of the game.
"I think Brady and Matthew have the ability, through their personality, to give our team a whole lot of confidence and swagger," Sullivan said. "I know what this tournament means to them personally and how important it is to put our best game on the ice. There's a certain determination that those guys have to want to win."
Matthew Tkachuk said he's "very confident" his brother will be at "his absolute best" against Canada. The Tkachuks have flanked Vegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel on a line for the Americans.
Both Tkachuk brothers have been open about what a 4 Nations championship -- and a second win over archrival Canada -- would mean for hockey in the U.S.
"It's something that we don't take for granted. The millions of people supporting us and the generations before us -- and the generations that we could add to -- and the kids that are watching at home that want to be us, we could open up a whole new wave of hockey players in this country," Matthew Tkachuk said. "So this opportunity is one we don't take lightly. Obviously, wearing the jersey and representing your country is such an incredible honor and kind of what we play for, but the opportunity that we have tomorrow is something that I don't even think we thought was possible and what we could create."

Team totals are only 2.5
Are we really going to get a 1-0,2-1 game?

Quinn Hughes won't join U.S. for 4 Nations championship game.

Defenseman Quinn Hughes will not travel to Boston to join the United States team as an injury replacement option for its 4 Nations Face-Off championship game against Canada, his agent confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday.
Sources told ESPN that the Americans will have Buffalo Sabres center Tage Thompson and New Jersey Devils defenseman Brett Pesce as injury insurance for Thursday night's 4 Nations final.
Hughes, 25, was expected to join the Americans for the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game after defenseman Charlie McAvoy was lost for the tournament. McAvoy was hospitalized Monday with an infection in his right shoulder and a significant injury to his AC joint.
Hughes initially made Team USA's roster but had to back out because of an oblique injury. He still hasn't been officially cleared by the Vancouver Canucks to return to play, having been out of action since Jan. 31. He wore a red noncontact jersey in Canucks practice Tuesday before being cleared for contact for Wednesday's practice.
Sources told ESPN that Hughes recently flew across the country back to Vancouver from the East Coast. To fly to Boston, and then to Las Vegas for the Canucks' next game Saturday, would have been a taxing travel week for him.
Tournament rules state that if a team loses two players at forward or on defense to injury or illness, it can bring on a non-roster player as an emergency injury replacement. Team Canada, for example, called up Dallas Stars defenseman Thomas Harley after it lost Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore to injury and Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar was unable to play against the U.S.
"The rules are the rules. I can't play unless anyone else gets injured, and I obviously don't want to see anyone get injured," Hughes said Tuesday. "If they had to do it over again, I think they'd allow teams to bring a couple extra players."
The Hughes decision ends two days of intense speculation that one of the NHL's best players could make a surprise comeback in the championship game. He won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman last season. He has 14 goals and 59 points to lead the Canucks and is averaging more than 25:18 in ice time this season.
On Tuesday, U.S. coach Mike Sullivan said "Quinn Hughes is coming" when asked about the Americans bringing in a defenseman from outside of their roster. After Wednesday's morning skate, Sullivan acknowledged that Hughes was not yet on his way from Vancouver and said Team USA GM Bill Guerin and his assistants were continuing to work to bring him to the 4 Nations final.
U.S. players anticipated the possibility that Hughes could join them in Boston, if not appear in the game.
"I know he's been watching every game," said his brother Jack Hughes of the Devils, who plays in Team USA's top line. "I know he is definitely frustrated. He wishes he could be a part of this, and a lot of great players that were injured and couldn't play a couple of them, so he's one of them and we're missing him big-time. But I know he was really looking forward to this and coming down the road here at the Olympics and World Cup of Hockey coming up, I know he'll be really excited for those events."
Jack Hughes said the drama surrounding his brother's Team USA status has been "just a tough situation for everyone" involved.
Quinn Hughes said the initial decision not to play was "extremely hard" for him.
I gotta thank Bill Guerin for how patient he was with me, not only 10 days ago but even last night and the last 24 hours. He understood how much I wanted to play and also what my obligations were to the Canucks. Really what it came down to, I just wasn't healthy enough where I wasn't sure it couldn't get worse," he said. "If there's a positive, I should be healthy enough to go next game against Vegas."
Team USA will face Canada for the 4 Nations championship Thursday night at TD Garden. It's a rematch of their emotional battle in Montreal on Saturday night that featured three fights in the opening nine seconds of the game and that the Americans won 3-1.

4 Nations Face-Off revitalizes hockey betting ahead of final.

In lieu of traditional All-Star festivities, the NHL opted to put on an international best-on-best tournament this season. The resulting 4 Nations Face-Off has been a resounding success, attracting massive viewership and surprising cultural relevance, which has extended to the sports betting realm.
Sportsbooks across the United States report that the 4 Nations games thus far have outperformed average regular season NHL contests. DraftKings says that its four most-bet hockey games of the season have been from the tournament, while FanDuel says that 4 Nations contests are averaging over six times as many bets as an average NHL game this regular season.
In particular, Saturday's first USA-Canada matchup -- an epic 3-1 victory for the Americans -- was, bar none, the most-bet hockey game of the season. FanDuel says that the contest saw 13 times more bets than all of the three-on-three games that made up last year's NHL All-Star event combined, and 11 times more bets than an average NHL game this regular season.
Caesars Sportsbook's head of hockey Karry Shreeve says that the book is handling "seven to 10 times" more money for each game, with the first North American rivalry showdown bringing in even more.
"That game we saw just as much handle as we would in a Stanley Cup game," Shreeve told ESPN. "I think there's a chance that for Thursday's final, we could get up to almost Game 7 numbers, which is just incredible in terms of what you're asking for in the middle of February for hockey. I mean this is completely unexpected and certainly unprecedented."
While the storied USA-Canada rivalry always raises the stakes, this year's iteration seems particularly heated given the long layoff of best-on-best action, "words that have been exchanged" between both teams, as well as "politically" motivated sentiments off the ice, per DraftKings sportsbook director Johnny Avello.
"I think that all throws a little fire into it," Avello told ESPN. "This is something that the fans love and these games are being bet heavily. This game Thursday is going to be a monster as far as betting is concerned, would outdo any All-Star game."
With the elevated bettor attention and subsequent higher handle, bookmakers are putting their most diligent work into setting the lines for Thursday night's championship.
"The 4 Nations has been great from a betting engagement standpoint, particularly as fans look for marquee events coming out of football season," ESPN BET director of North American trading Adrian Horton said via email. "Thursday night feels like a Stanley Cup Final game from a trading perspective."
That means the books are expecting a low total. Shreeve points out that, during last year's playoffs, Game 7s were only seeing "three or four goals," as teams tend to tighten up when the stakes are their highest. As such, Thursday's over-under has sat at a consensus 5.5 for much of the week and has only juiced further to the under (-135 at ESPN BET); BetMGM reports 30% of bets on the under, but 39% of the money.
Additionally, the moneyline has stayed remarkably close all week, with ESPN BET keeping the game a pick 'em at -110 for each side. USA is getting a majority of the action at major American sportsbooks, leading BetMGM trading manager Christian Cipollini to say, "Canada winning would be a good outcome for the sportsbook."
That said, there has been perhaps more support than expected for Canada: ESPN BET reports 46.1% of bets and 46.5% of handle backing the Canadians and BetMGM reports a 5% positive money split on their side. That tension, just as it should be felt on the ice in Boston, is keeping this betting line feeling truly championship caliber.
"This almost has a Game 7 feel to it, which is absolutely incredible, and so we're going to treat it as such," said Shreeve.
