Special counsel subpoenas Trump campaign for more documents

(CNN)Special counsel Robert Mueller has issued a subpoena to the Trump campaign for more Russia-related documents, two sources familiar with the matter tell CNN.

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the request.
The special counsel had previously received the information that had already been handed over to Congress, but investigators felt there were things they didn't see. The new subpoena seeks more records based on various search terms.
One source described it as a "cleanup" subpoena, expanding the search terms. The campaign is in the process of complying, the source said.
The White House has not received a similar subpoena, CNN is told.

Both the Trump campaign and a lawyer for the Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment. The second source calls the subpoena "bookkeeping" at the end of a grand jury process. That source called the subpoena "largely perfunctory" and said much of it will be "duplicative" of documents the special counsel already has.
One source says fulfilling the new request could take months because of the amount being asked for, while the other says it likely won't delay things beyond January.
The special counsel is investigating possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia from the 2016 election.
Last month, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former Trump campaign official Rick Gates surrendered to Mueller and pleaded not guilty after an indictment contained 12 counts against them, and former Trump campaign foreign-policy adviser George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to making a false statement to the FBI after he lied about his interactions with foreign officials close to the Russian government.

More than a dozen top Trump campaign officials subpoenaed in Mueller probe

  • Special Counsel Robert Mueller issued a subpoena to more than a dozen officials from Donald Trump's campaign, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller caught the Trump campaign by surprise last month, issuing a subpoena to more than a dozen officials despite the campaign's voluntary compliance with his probe, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing a source.
The Journal called the subpoena the "first official order" for information from the campaign. The campaign is responding to the order on an "ongoing" basis, the source reportedly told the outlet.
None of those who received the subpoena were compelled to testify before a grand jury, the Journal reported.
"Sending a subpoena to an entity that says it has been cooperating with document requests isn't unusual in cases in which prosecutors have some concern that their demands aren't being met promptly or aren't being entirely fulfilled," the Journal wrote, citing former prosecutors.
Mueller is overseeing an investigation into attempts by the Russian government to meddle in the 2016 election and potential collusion with Donald Trump's presidential campaign.
Neither the White House nor a spokesperson for the special counsel responded immediately to a request for comment Thursday night. Trump has previously denied working with the Russian government for political benefit.
The special counsel's office declined to comment when contacted by CNBC about the Journal's report. A representative for the White House also declined to comment.

  • The campaign had said it was voluntarily complying with the probe.

We have found no evidence of collusion, coordination, or conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russians."
