Associated Press

DALLAS — The coach of a Texas high school basketball team that beat another team 100-0 was fired Sunday, the same day he sent an e-mail to a newspaper saying he will not apologize "for a wide-margin victory when my girls played with honor and integrity."

Kyle Queal, the headmaster for Covenant School, said in The Dallas Morning News online edition that he could not answer if the firing was a direct result of coach Micah Grimes' e-mail disagreeing with administrators who called the blowout "shameful."

Queal did not immediately answer phone messages or e-mail from The Associated Press.

On its Web site last week, Covenant, a private Christian school, posted a statement regretting the outcome of its Jan. 13 shutout win over Dallas Academy. "It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened. This clearly does not reflect a Christlike and honorable approach to competition," said the statement, signed by Queal and board chair Todd Doshier.

Grimes, who has been criticized for letting the game get so far out of hand, made it clear in the e-mail Sunday to the newspaper that he does not agree with his school's assessment.

"In response to the statement posted on The Covenant School Web site, I do not agree with the apology or the notion that the Covenant School girls basketball team should feel embarrassed or ashamed," Grimes wrote in the e-mail, according to the newspaper. "We played the game as it was meant to be played. My values and my beliefs would not allow me to run up the score on any opponent, and it will not allow me to apologize for a wide-margin victory when my girls played with honor and integrity."

A phone number for Grimes could not be located by The Associated Press. The Dallas Morning News said Grimes did not respond to their repeated e-mail requests for a telephone interview.

There was no answer at a number listed for Doshier.

A parent who attended the game said Covenant continued to make 3-pointers— even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

Covenant was up 59-0 at halftime.

Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia.

There is no mercy rule in girls basketball that shortens the game or permits the clock to continue running when scores become one-sided. There is, however, "a golden rule" that should have applied in this contest, Edd Burleson, the director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, said last week. Both schools are members of this association, which oversees private school athletics in Texas.

The story has received national attention, and the Dallas Academy team has been recognized for refusing to give up during the lopsided contest.

100-0 is in bad taste. In the 4th qtr call off the dogs, play a soft zone D or something, especially considering who your opponent is.

I heard they kept shooting 3's and pressing thus forcing turnovers on D the entire game. Sounds like the coach is a real shitbag.

Still though, how in the hell do you not score one basket?

Absolutley ridiculous that he got fired. Should he have done that? Probably not. However, when there is such a wide margin in talent theres not much to do other then pass the ball around the perimiter which after about 1 minute of non stop passing angers everyone involved. I know because I coached a 8th grade team that ended up with 2 all-stars that quit the all star team. They were better then everyone and even when we go up 20 and I say, no more press, no more 3's they drive to the hoop. So 4th Q when we are up 60 I tell them, no shots, pass it around. This goes on for about 1 minute until the kids on the other team baisically start intentionally fouling trying to get the ball. I didn't know what to do.

If you are going to fire a coach for a big win you should have never scheduled that game in the first place. The guy did his job and in girls basketball, from what I have seen, if a good team goes against a very bad team it can get pretty ugly. I once saw a 78-9 girls game while waiting for my court to clear.

When I was in grammar shcool (also a Parochial school) our 8th grade had a boys team, there were maybe 15 boys in the entire class and about 7 could do anything remotley close to playing basketball. We played a game against a huge Parochial school from Boston and lost 52-8. They had a big 15 man strong undefeated team that was just way to good for our little no home gym or practice time pick up team. Our coach was one of our parrish priests.

I remember being humilated but got over it pretty quick.

Yea I mean my Frosh baseball team was pretty horrific. We went I think 2-31 and got 10 run ruled quite often. But I always felt like when they were up 18-0 and still batting in the 3rd and started to not even lead and not swing at pitches etc I felt like I was being patronized. I'd rather have both teams go hard from start to finish regardless of the score. You don't learn anything from soft playing or being soft played, its a waste of everyones time. Might as well end the game.

Why was this game even scheduled? I'm sure both coaches knew what was going to happen. It's not like college football where small school teams routinely get their asses kicked when they play the football factories but there is big $$$$ involved in those cases so both teams know why that game is being played. Duke just killed Maryland by 40 the other night but it's not like Maryland has only 20 guys in the school and they don't recruit from the same talent pool. Even if Duke won by 70, it wouldn't or shouldn't bother anyone other than the Maryland fans, coaches or players. Maybe Dallas Academy shouldn't play any school with more than say 50 girls.

Douchebag coach deserved it. These are not professional athletes that are being paid, but kids. If were talking about a Detriot Lions game, go ahead and run it up. But a girls bball team with a student body of 20, give me a break. Is this guy any relation to Bob Stoops?

During my senior year, my baseball team played this horrific inner city high school that known more for their basketball team. We were up 31-2 in the third inning when the game had to be stopped because of darkness (our field did not have lights). Our coach had the audacity to ask the opposing coach if he wanted to schedule a time to finish the game. I thought the other coach was going to clock him.

I wish we could see some tape of this game. What kind of speech is the coach going to give to the team that's down 59-0 at the half? I'd like to hear that.

A high school girls half is 16 minutes so the winning team averaged just under 4 points per minute in the first half. They scored 31 points in the second half(zero points in the final 4 minutes of the game) which would be just under 2 points per minute. In all likelyhood it looks like they probably had about 84-88 points at the end of the third quarter and that's where they probably just got caught up in the moment of trying to score 100 points, just to say they did it. All that said the coach of the winning team should have backed off once they hit 70-0 and told his girl's to work on other things like passing, or maybe even has his team commit a few fouls so the other team can try and make a few free throw so they don't get shutout. Those would have been the classy things to do.

It sounds like in all probability that the losing team was so bad that they had trouble even advancing the ball beyond half court without having it stolen. I would also be curious to know how many field goal attempts the losing team had compared to their opponent, and how many turnovers they commited.

It wouldn't surprise me if an attorney or two got in on this on behalf of some of the girls on the losing team.

"Intentional Affliction Of Emotional Distress" sounds like money to me.

See, this is why the country has become pussyfied. Because of tear wiping, unfair screaming soccer mom and dads like this. Fuck that bullshit, its just a basketball game. What are you fucking people worried about now, the moral psyche of these kids? They'll get over it ok.

Shit my junior year in high school, Keyshaun Johnson's high school team whooped my squad 72-0. IN MY HOUSE for homecoming!! LOL, big deal.

I'm living a pretty good, satifying life now. I'm not emotionally scarred. Actually some of my teammates have a good laugh about it whenever I come back home to visit.

Get fucking over it you pussys.

You know come to think of it, around the time I was in high school, Lisa Leslie played for Morningside highschool out in Inglewood, CA. (Home of Byron Scott and a few other NBA players). Anyway, I remember her team one season whooped on South Torrance High School. South Torrance was a suburban, Ken and Barbie, beach side community high school. It consisted mostly of 5'2 asian PG's and SG's. Probably a few white chicks at forward, but no one over 5'8 i believe

Anyway, for the season finale its tradition at Morningside for the squads star to try to break the school scoring record at the end of the year. The coach instructed Lisa's teammates to feed her the ball when she was open. She was trying to break the record of 69 pts. In the first quarter, Lisa poured 49 points. In the second quarter, she dumped in 52 more. Morningside held a 102-24 lead at halftime, and Lisa had 101 of those points. South Torrance's team forfeited the 2H and never came outta the lockeroom.

This was in 1990, you know what? The coach just retired about 5 years ago. No calls for being fired, no whining, no demands for newspapers to slam the coach.

If your point is that there wouldnt be an uproar (or as much of one) if the score ended 88-12 then I would agree with you. I think part of it is because one number is "100" and another is "0"

It's hard to get there unless you are striving for complete humiliation. Take into account that girls high school basketball games have four 8 minute quarters ~ you dont get to 100-0 by accident.

Exactly. Who hasn't had a goot ass whoppin before? Except maybe LeBron James or someone. If your going to baby a bunch of high schoolers then why even play the games? How can you not score ONE point?

The scoring pattern leads me to believe they let off in the second half and when they had 85 points with 12 minutes left (guessing here) said what the fuck, they can't stop us, lets score 100. I know I'd do it and I'm sure most people here would too.

My main problem with this is why are these teams even playing eachother? I'm sure it's been a mismatch for a while now. There's no mercy rule? That falls on more than just the head coach.
