The Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries are more liberal and have more freedom than the US yet they dont have any enemies or need for huge armies. Why?

Add Australia, New Zealand and most of the Western world to that list (no need for huge armies).

In the past 197 years, the USA has experienced one significant act of violence against it's mainland by foreign aggressors (9/11/01).

One school of thought suggests that's because we have such huge armies and military so no other country would fuck with us.

A contrasting attitude is that at the end of the day, there's really no other country on the planet with any overt desire to wage violence against the mainland USA.

The reader is of course welcome to embrace whichever attitude makes for their increased happiness.

heh....Well, I stand corrected. Clearly we need a a half a trillion dollar per year "defense" budget to make sure someone else does not try the ol' drive a truck up to a major building and detonate a big bomb attack.

Next one that tries that will get one of our nuclear missiles launched out of the ground in Omaha and sent right up their ass.

As long as we're toppling governments and propping up friendly dictators, we need a huge army.

The world doesn't need our "protection" as much as the war hawks around here think.

Obama can talk all the nonsense he wants. He isn't going to do a fucking thing to change our militant ways.

as long as we consider ourselves the moral example of the world things won't change much.

depending on who's in office, it's just a matter of who are enemies will be.

god bless the u.s. either way.

Heinrich Himmler visited Norway. He is shown here with Quisling and the Nazi gauleiter Josef Terboven who was the effective ruler of Norway during the German occupation. (The man on the far right is General Nikolaus von Falkenhorst, the commander of the German forces in Norway.)

Uhm maybe it's because we kicked the Nazi's out with our big armies and military.

Do you honestly believe any of these countries could survive without the American umbrella of protection?

C'mon...just tweaking our noses to get a rise I guess. :think2:

would you rather blow up a place that has legalized drugs and prostitution, causes no problems with other countries, and has some of the most beautiful women i have ever seen, or visit it?

MMJ, offer up some suggestions for which country might be sincerely interested in invading either Holland or Norway in the year 2009 if the US were to reduce the size of their active military.

We gotta stop that blatant prostitution in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

No, wait that was when the republicans were in charge.

I don't disagree with this. But it's better to be prepared than naive. Of course, naivety consumes DC today.

There is a lot of history to teach us valuable lessons. Not only pertaining to the behavior of mankind, but also to teach us how the earth's temperature is in constant flux.

Do y'all actually believe that if we were a weak nation, that our enemies would not exploit that weakness today? seriously?

So which one of your caretakers espouses the legalization of prostitution old wise one? Is that what Mama Obama promises when he's talking to people in a strip club or something? Since his words are so cheap, I guess that's plausible.

Why is the Netherlands reducing the size of the Red Light district? lemme guess, it's Bush's fault!!! LOL

--------------------------------------------------------------
In 2003 it was estimated that in Amsterdam, one woman in 35 was working as prostitute, compared to one in 300 in London.[1] Since then, a significant number of brothels and "windows" have been closed because of supected criminal activity. In 2009 the The Dutch justice ministry announced plans to close 320 prostitution "windows" from Amsterdam.[2]

Human trafficking

The Netherlands is a primary country of destination for victims of human trafficking. The UNODC (UN Office on Drugs and Crime) produced a report which showed that Netherlands is one of the top destinations for victims of human trafficking; countries that are major sources of trafficked persons include Thailand, China, Nigeria, Albania, Bulgaria, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine.[15]
Currently, human trafficking in the Netherlands is on the rise, according to figures obtained from the National Centre against Human Trafficking. The report shows a substantial increase in the number of victims from Hungary and China. There were 809 registered victims of human trafficking in 2008, 763 were women and at least 60 percent of them were forced to work in the sex industry. All victims from Hungary were female and were forced into prostitution. [16] [17]

obviously, prostitution is great:103631605:103631605:103631605

at least willing participants in the sex trade are pulling their own weight, not like the dead weight 90%ers that give the Democrats any power they have.

We could cut our military and "defense" spending by 80% and still be the most powerful military on the planet. Combined with our thousands of domestic law enforcement agencies, we're more than able to respond to threats by individuals or private organizations.

And as long as we have nukes on land, air and sea, I'm amazingly confident that no other country will initiate acts of war against the USA.

Finally, with each passing day, our country becomes more financially tied to other countries and the more those ties increase the less likely it is for those other countries to support undue acts of aggression against the USA.

Why is the Netherlands reducing the size of the Red Light district?

1) I don't at this time have any caretakers of which I'm aware.

But I do know that the alternative to eliminating criminal laws against adult prostitution assures a higher level of disease, injury, death and ancillary crime.

Somewhat moot to the Thread topic, though.

2) The Netherlands reduction to the RL district is nominal and allows the state to better regulate the industry. That's only possible due to it being a legal enterprise, since no form of regulation can be enacted and/or enforced if the industry is 100% illegal.

If the rest of the government isn't going to be run efficiently, why should we hold the military to such silly standards?

I don't accuse you of having a caretaker, but Punter does. However, if one wants to make a political point by attacking a political party about prostitution, then one must show the difference between the parties.

Is 'human trafficking" an ancillary crime? I'm not sure there's a worse crime.

Of course, if you make more stuff legal, there will be less crimes, but there are obviously different crimes. Should we make theft and murder legal? that'll reduce the crime rate, reduce unemployment in multiple ways by reducing the workforce and creating new careers and doing such will reduce our deficits too.
