is it really your intent to compare 2008 with 1930-1932?

I think anyone who remembered that era would find such belief to be pretty funny.

You could probably just take Obama's name out of your quote below......put in McCain's...take out the 2nd paragraph....whether what is said is conceptually right or not isn't even up for argument.........you don't say it the same day as when a major bank goes under and people get in panic mode.

He makes a hair brain joke, he knew what he was doing, that he has to know is going to blow up in his face, and he does it anyways. His audience knew exactly what was going on, unless you believe they thought that was a really funny line they never heard before.

His poor judgment put his campaign on the defensive for two days, not against McCain / Palin, but against press coverage.

OK, poor choice of words, it's the kind of thing that helped bury Bush 41 in 92. he was right, but the people didn't know it.

Anyhow, I don't think the OP was about choice of words. I can't be certain, but I believe the poster believes this economy is similar to that of the great depression.

Mccain's gaffe yesterday shouldn't really be underestimated

Obama has been up with ads quoting McCain saying the same thing back in August....the free media he got yesterday really helps reinforce the perception that McCain is "out of touch" when it comes to the economy.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Obama gain a point or two in the tracking polls the next few days...we will see.

The economy is not as bad. The Republican leadership's grasp of the situation is very similar.

the real economy gets bad AFTER the markets go tits up and crash cause people lose confidence in the financial system

will there be a huge loss of confidence amongst the masses we shall see....i don't have that answer

bottom line you won't see the depressionary like situations on the street till after the markets at large take a huge haircut....if a humongous haircut even comes

markets predict the future....

all along i've leaned to 2-3 year nasty recession but maybe things will get worse.....
