In sunny L.A. Dick loosened up with the humility issue over the bulging biceps.

I am enjoying the memories here. As journeyman already stated, the shorts they wore and the weird uniforms were something very bizarre.

Maybe you guys can recall. Didn't Dick Allen have an incident where he almost cut his finger off on the front headlight of his car? Does anyone remember the particulars?

More on Wood

ERA 1971 (his first yr as a starter) 42 GS 1.91
1972 , 49-GS 2.51 ERA....
1973 , 48-GS 3.46 ERA...
He retired at age 36, did his arm fall off?

Career ERA 3.24 (knuckleballer)

Looks as if he was injured in 1976 and never regained his control, (BB/K ratio of 124/111 in '77 & '78).

From Can of Corn:
On Sunday, May 9, 1976, at Tiger Stadium, Detroit, a sixth-inning drive off the bat of Tigers centerfielder Ron LeFlore struck the left knee of the 34-year-old southpaw. Wood went down in a heap, clutching the knee. The next day, he underwent surgery for a transverse displaced fracture of the left patella (shattered kneecap). Wilbur Wood's season, and for all intents and purpose, career, was over. Ironically, it was a left knee that both started and ended Wood's rise to stardom.

After two mediocre seasons following the injury, Wood, an avid fisherman, retired after the 1978 season and literally "went fishin'" back in his native New England, where he resides today. In 1998, Wood boasted to Sports Collectors Digest, "You'll never again see anyone do the stuff I did." Indeed.

Oh those shorts. I remember a game the White Sox were wearing the shorts and the catcher changed to pants because the equipment was scratching the hell out of him (go figue.)

Anyway the opposing Manger went nuts, said the Catcher was out of Uniform and made the umps made the Catcher put the Shorts back on. I think they scrapped the whole Shorts thing soon after that.

I want to Say it Earl Weaver was the Manager, but I'm not 100% sure.

Good story ...It wouldn't surpirse me if it was Earl....Weaver would be the type of manager to bring a rule book out with him ....

What a character Earl was...back in the day that was a big part of going to the game, waiting for Earl to come out and go nuts on the umpire....he , Eddie Murray and Ken Kaiser had an incredible fued for years...it got to the point Kaiser wasn't allowed to call Orioles games...

I didn't realize Allen missed the entire month of September in '74...that was his last big season, traded back to Philly, he was only 32 in 1974...and I just looked he was only 5-11 190, I always thought he was a big man, the story of the large bat etc...how did he swing a bat that large being 5-11 , 190???

I read he had a bad alcohol problem,, seems to fit...he was one of the first colorful chracters I remember, he wore those Reggie Jackson glasses and the helmet in the field...

Dick Allen was a degenerate horse player. bought and raced some t-breds. his brother was a t-bred trainer on the new york circuit for years. Dick worked for him on the backstretch. Dick ended up totally busted working for his brother. i am sure he gets a nice pension tho.

Forgot to mention the reason he wore a helmet in the field. when he played at philly you know the "city of brotherly love" the fans hated Allen. he didn't like them much either. the fans use to throw quarter and half dollar coins at him when he played in the field. so he started wearing a helmet on the field at all times.
