Is Texas struggling this bad? I can imagine the football and men's basketball coaches aren't too concerned here. But what about the assistant Track coach who's probably pulling down $45-50K? To save $300,000? What a joke. Employers like this need a fucking wake up call. Small things really boost morale among employees (look at the tech companies that have free everything in their employee lounges).

Mack Brown hasn't been Texas' coach since losing 30-7 to Oregon in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30, but now Brown and Texas can officially begin the process of moving on.
Multiple outlets (from Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman to Mike Finger of the San Antonio Express-News)have reported that Texas and Brown reached a settlement. The specifics of the agreement call for Brown to be paid $500,000 for a one-year deal as a special assistant to university president Bill Powers.

Additionally, Brown will be paid a $2.75 million buyout in four yearly installments of $687,500. That's the amount Brown would be owed if he was terminated as head coach of the Longhorns. That brings Brown's total compensation to $3.25 million—if Brown leaves his new position after one year, that is.
Brown's old contract stated that, in the event he stepped down on his own accord, he would serve as a special assistant until 2020. Using thetimeline of Brown's "resignation," that means Texas would have owed him $3.5 million instead.
The $250,000 difference benefits Texas financially speaking, but the terms of the settlement are really best for both sides.

It saves Texas money since the school will be invested in new head coach Charlie Strong. According to Chip Brown ofOrangebloods.com, Texas regents approved a five-year deal for Strong last month that pays him $5 million per year in base salary (with $100,000 annual raises) plus incentives. Additionally, the university will pick up the tab for Strong's $4.375 million buyout from Louisville.
For Brown, 62, the settlement opens up other career options. Brown's new job will focus on fundraising, something at which he's always been good. He'll do the glad-handing and the alumni relations thing for a year; after that, don't be surprised if Brown and Texas part ways for good.
Brown is known for his charisma, so a future in television seems like a natural transition. If he moves to the Longhorn Network, he would be paid by ESPN, not Texas.
Brown may also feel the urge to coach again, and you can bet plenty of schools would line up to take him.
Either way, he'll have options. That's not bad for a messy ending.

The public story, of course, is that Brown reached a mutual decision with Texas in December to step down. However, the university is paying Brown as though he was terminated. Couple that with a previous report from the Statesman that Brown was angling for a larger buyout and it provides more ammo to the notion that Brown's decision to step down was not entirely his.
Not to mention Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports previously reported that Brown was, in fact, forced out.
Brown's 16 years at Texas may not have ended like he or the university previously envisioned. That's unfortunate, but it's the reality of what four consecutive disappointing seasons will do. It was time for a change.
Money, and the abundance of it, can oftentimes be problematic in figuring out how to make that change. Texas and Brown came to an agreement on that front. Now, both sides can officially move on.

Illegals get the free meals in Austin these days. The Texas coaches can't seem to measure up to the border crossers.

Texas should 'hire' some illegals as coaches. Think of all the rules they could break and get away with.

Things at Texas are hitting a new low. This is really sad. It shows you how screwed up things really are at Texas, and the Big 12-2 in general. Every day it is a different story with the Big 12-2. The other day, HC Snyder at K-State wanted the Big 12 to go after Nebraska. The players want A&M back. Like that is really going to happen. The best thing that happened to A&M and Nebraska was to get the hell out of that zoo they call the Big 12.

Steve Patterson is a douchebag, he might be the most hated person to ever work for the Blazers.

I guess that UT will have a new AD and HC by 2018. That certainly seems to be the direction they are headed in. This is going to kill the "Longhorn" Network.

Considering how he is alienating everybody on campus, it wouldn't surprise if they got rid of Patterson before they fire Strong..Right now he's about as popular as a flying saucer cult with the Texas fans and coaches.

I am sure that Charlie can not be happy with this situation. If they let Patterson go, the new AD will more than likely want to pick his own HC, and it is highly doubtful that he will want Strong.

Well, winning makes your point mute. If Strong is winning and beating OU it won't matter what AD is in there. If he's losing he's fuk'ed either way...

Coaches like Mark Mangino & Charlie Weiss would never stand-still for the loss of a perk like this.....They would insist it be treated as a cruelty issue sort of like the "kindness to animals" initiatives. Maybe Texas should re-think the matter and give the staff meal vouchers good at the Golden Coral.....There should be one of these franchises in Austin.....Their hunger pains would definitely disappear after each visit. I am still waiting to see what JBLonghorn has to say about all of this.

You guys have no idea what you're saying if you think Strong is in trouble or if you think he's going to fired in the next 3 years. Patterson is a different story. Not only did he cut the coaches meals, but he cut their game tickets in half from 4 to 2. He's done about 120 other things to alienate the student fanbase and especially the university's faculty. In a time when one should be kissing ass and trying to get more butts in the seats he's done nothing but the EXACT opposite. Not to mention raising season tickets by 25% in some cases. He's a complete idiot. But Strong? That guy is doing nothing but the right things. Remember those 10 players he kicked off? 7 of them never ended up playing football again and 3 of them transferred. Of those 3, 2 have recently found more trouble and they're gone from that school. ONE, 1 player, is still playing. So Charlie knew what he was doing.

Can't WAIT for this season! If anyone should be talked about it's Bob Stoops. That guy has one hell of an important season coming up.

A successful athletic program does start at the top. If Patterson is creating a bad environment, don't underestimate the trickle down. I'm not claiming any kind of knowledge, but this has been a big part of Nebraska's problems since Bill Byrne left for Aggie.

I totally agree with you "Lee" but we all know that an Army travels on its stomach (I think Napoleon said that); History suggests he met his "Waterloo" when he cut back on the c-rations............. Those Texas coaches need to be fed.

First off, there's really only 1 poster here who has a hard-on for Strong. I think most of the rest here think he will be given time to turn it around (I'm sure his buyout is steep as well). I'm personally a big fan of his and hope he succeeds.

On to your comments about the AD; yes, he's a retard. He's not making any friends w/ the way he's handled things. I didn't know he reduced the tickets. That's just silly. In this day and age, stadiums aren't filling up the way they used to (w/ HD TV's and other home amenities making it more pleasurable to stay at home). Raising ticket prices when the team isn't performing is idiotic as well.
