Controversy over the teaching practices of an Enka Middle School teacher strikes a nerve with parents. Thursday night, we introduced you to a Patty Clement, who accuses her daughter's 6th grade teacher, Rex Roland, of bullying her and calling her a "loser." On Friday morning, the 11-year-old was threatened at school and later that night, Clement says her daughter got almost 100 threatening text messages. While Clement still wants her daughter's teacher suspended, other parents and former students of Roland say he's a terrific teacher.
Patty Clement says Roland first wrote "loser" on her daughter's paper back in November. Clement says she spoke with the principal at Enka and the principal said she would put a stop to it. Clement says it happened again just a few weeks ago.
"His techniques need to change," says Clement.
Not everyone agrees with her. Some former students and parents are defending and explaining Roland's teaching style.
"A lot of the students he has are academically gifted students, and so one of the ways that he would joke with them would be if they scored a 110, he always gave extra credit, so if they scored a 110, 120 on a paper, he would have a joke on it ‘loser’," says parent, Kathy Andrews.
Roland did apologize to Clement, but she wants him suspended. She says his behavior is unacceptable and so is the harassment and teasing her daughter now faces at school.
"I don't know what we're going to do, but I’ll fight to the end."
The Buncombe County School District says the investigation into this situation is ongoing and that it is a personnel matter
