First bad sign: lobby was virtually empty when i came in (25 screen theatre). no line, so i used a live clerk rather than one of those machines. this is virtually unprecedented for me in this theatre at approximately this time of day on a friday.
Second bad sign: checked in on the 2pm TAXI. 8 people in a 500 seat theatre.
Trailers: FLPHX (looks bad to me - in fact, i'd like to take a moment to predict this will bomb); AFSUN (looks exactly like every other PBROS movie); UDRTW; POLAR. no discernable response to any of the above.
FRINL: 175 seat theatre, 30% full. not bad, but not excellent either.
i am a huge sports fan and had read the positive reviews for this one so i came in with very high expectations. suffice it to say i was very disappointed. the movie was beautifully shot, and very well acted but it relied upon all of the typical sports movie characters and cliches that we have all seen too many times.
a few things of note: there are alot of lockerroom speech scenes (alot); the football action, which looks really good (but no better than any other recent football movie, IMO), gets a bit silly because the director has no sense of football strategy whatsoever and this seriously detracts from the drama (ie, who runs the ball with 12 seconds left? - that sort of thing).
better to go rent Hoosiers or watch some real football.
happy trading.
