Do you guys do your own taxes? Hire an accountant? Use HR&BLOCK/TAXTURBO Software?

And a little deeper question, Our tax code seems uber complicated... Is it like this in most countries?.. Any chance they completely wipe out this tax code and start over in our lifetime?

Tax code is complicated in every country and they all have different twists. Tax code is pretty simple here unless you have a lot of stuff going on. I would say a major percentage of people have wages, maybe interest and dividends, and take standard deduction. House owners claim mortgage interest and RE tax, maybe charitable contributions but not too much complications going on I would think for most of us

I just used an online software, was free for Federal and $15 for state. Could have easily done it on paper but didnt want to deal with mailing the stuff in and waiting for IRS to process everything.

I am working 65 hours a week until April 15th doing tax for expats and foreign nationals. Tax Season :ohno:

Best and cheapest there is at $14.99. Do em one night, and they will be approved by the time you wake up, with Direct Deposit in 1-2 weeks. I've recommended it to a good but of folks, and they all use it annually now.

Give it a go. Best part is you can mess around with it and see your return amounts, and it doesn't charge you unless you decide to file.

Turbo tax for me and the wife's return. Easy to do and cheap. Direct deposit in about 7 days. If I had a more difficult
return I'd go to an accountant.

If everything you have is on your return is from a tax form in the mail (W-2, 1099-INT/1099-DIV, 1098, etc.) then I suggest using turbo tax or some software. It is fairly easy and there probably isn't anything an accountant will find you that your software will not.

if you have a more complicated return (purchased/sold home, schedule c business, rental properties, excessive stock trading, home office, etc.) then go to someone who knows.

like fixing your car....if it is simple then why not do it yourself but when it gets too complicated, why not save your time and pay the people who do that for a living

I used to
Go to an accountant who charged one price for the return (you had to let him know how agressive you wanted him to be), and charged you another price if you wanted him to sign it.

I still do my own using TurboTax but it is becoming extremely complicated as I have rental property in another state (Schedule E!) and some other things that make my return rather complex.

I wouldn't pay someone else to do it as most tax professionals use the same types of programs and simply charge you more (The last time I asked a tax preparer how much it would cost to do my return I was quoted $500).

I can't stand tax season but I also realize that there will never be any meaningful simplification in my lifetime.
It is only going to get worse.

Do my own...got tired of paying someone else too much and found that I can get a better return myself by itemizing chit.

From what I understood (understand), I would still be responsible for the money end, but him signing as the paid preparer took the criminal liability off the table

You are absolutely right Detective Murphy.

Fortunately is was so long ago, I don't have to worry about any repercussions. At the time it was some of the best money I ever spent.

same here. Tried doing it my own few years ago, got it done and correctly, just was a headache

Surprising to hear. I know some are afraid of it, or making a mistake, but the software I use, Taxact, is as simple as reading a book and flipping the pages. Fast, simple, easy.
